Getting to know Jimmy Choo’s Tamara Mellon

Getting to know Jimmy Choo’s Tamara Mellon

One of my fashion bibles is Harper’s Bazaar. And one of the lust-worthy brands I adore is Jimmy Choo which is why it is so lovely when two such wonderful things come together in one like the current issue of Bazaar. In it, Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon opens the doors to her new New York apartment, and discusses her new life.

Looking at her shoe closet in the magazine, one phrase comes to mind and it’s that of Rachel Zoe’s, “I Die.” Because honestly, look at this. Could one’s shoe karma be any more amazing?!

In the article, Tamara takes readers on a tour of her home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a mix of high art and glam minimalism, and poses with her daughter, Minty. In the interview, she opens up about her lifestyle, overcoming challenges, and building the Jimmy Choo empire.

On her new life in New York: “Last year was the best and worst year of my life, a breakthrough year for me,” Mellon explains. “I’ve moved here and managed to clear up a lot of the wreckage. I feel like I’ve arrived in New York with a clean slate, and I have a whole new set of challenges ahead of me. And I find that invigorating.”

On building the Jimmy Choo empire: “I’ve paid my dues in this business,” she says. She started working when she was 18 at the London fashion emporium Browns. “At the time, I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I hate this!’ But the lesson I learned was so valuable: I learned retail.” She later met Jimmy Choo, a London cobbler, and the rest is a fashion fairy tale. “But still, when someone asks about a career in fashion, I say start at the bottom,” she says. “If you want to start a business, you have to know it from the ground up.”

You can read the interview in full here, but highly recommend picking up a copy to see all the drool-worthy photos from Tamara’s incredible apartment.

In Saks’ newsletter today they featured new shoe designers that you won’t want to miss. Naturally, being a total shoe obsessed girl, I clicked through and fell in love with Alexandre Birman’s designs, especially the two below. How great is this first pair?!

modman monday 03 : THE warehouse sale.

modman monday 03 : THE warehouse sale.

THE Barneys Warehouse Sale is upon us! (Well, at least for the w&w readers in San Francisco). If you love shopping, I’m sure you’re well acquainted with the sale. If you’re new to the fashion/shopping world, then listen up!

The w&w team made a quick announcement last week about the upcoming Barneys Warehouse Sale in San Francisco. I’ve been to two Warehouse sales in New York so I can attest to the low prices (between 50-75% off) and the great offerings (most of the time). I hope you w&w readers will come across some great pieces! There are a few things to keep in mind for those of you who are planning to go, or go back.

1. Get rest. And have water with you. Anything it takes to keep you full, hydrated, attentive, whatever. And you may have to change in public, so wear appropriate undergarments. All of these tips seem like common sense, but some people forget them. Everyone drops their pants to try on their clothes but some people dont cover up. At all. Enough said.

2. If you want the good stuff, go early! If any SF readers havent made their way over to the Fort Lason Center Herbst Pavilion, I suggest you take a longer lunch break today. Coveted shoes and bags go first, so if those are your choice pieces then go early/the starting day.

3. After the first few days, popular styles in popular sizes (smalls & mediums) are hard to come by. You really have to 1) be patient, 2) have enough energy to dig (emphasis on the rest part/#1). And 3) you have to have a good eye.

4. Prices drop as the sale gets close to the end date. If you’re not out to find a particular item but want to get a few pieces at its cheapest, then head over in the last few days and you’ll find deeper discounts.

5. Before you walk through the doors, be sure to take a minute and set a limit for yourself. Its so easy to get caught up in the discounts and how much you’re saving.. but in the end, if you dont end up wearing your purchases, the amount of money you spend could be a considerable loss. If you see something you like but dont love it, put it down. If you know a certain style doesnt fit your body type, then pass on it. But if you have the money, go for it!

For SF gals, the sale will go until August 8 at the Fort Mason Center Herbst Pavilion. For LA readers, the sale will run from August 5 through August 15 at the LA Convention Center South Hall K. The sale hits NY on August 19-September 6 at 255 West 17th Street (back entrance of the Chelsea Barneys Co-op).

If you’ve been to the SF sale, share your experience with others! And be sure to leave tips and suggestions for other readers too.

I got your back,

Covet vs. Catch: Oxfords

Covet vs. Catch: Oxfords

Two things:

First off, I had lunch the other week with the lovely Kat from Polyvore and she not only is delightful, but she got to showing me some of the great tools that Polyvore has for bloggers – especially fashion bloggers. Now, I’ve played with Polyvore before to satisfy my imagination of a super high fashion closet (like here and here), but I haven’t turned to Polyvore for tools to make WIT & Whimsy better. Well that all stops now because I am obsessed with all they have to offer now that I’ve spent the time to look.

So, thanks to the Polyvore Clipper (this thing is A-mazing!!), I bring you the brand new Covet vs. Catch!

Now all that being said, one Fall trend I’m definitely going to sport in the coming weeks? Oxfords. These old-school shoes have been re-vamped and had a vintage-looking touch put on them and I’m thinking I need a pair in brown stat.

modman monday 01 : menswear influences

modman monday 01 : menswear influences

Hey all!

Happy modman monday! I hope you enjoyed your weekend, and although some of you may not be ready for work, Monday is here so you might as well tackle it!

I sat around all weekend thinking about what to share with W&W readers.. and it just made sense to cover menswear (what I wear) influences in womenswear (what you wear)!

style.com

Alexander Wang Fall 2010 featured re-envisioned Wall Street banker suits while Bottega Veneta Fall 2010 created full pant suits, Band of Outsiders Fall 2010 highlighted rich blazers & hefty trousers and of course, Rag & Bone Fall 2010 played with plaid and tweed. All of these collections had menswear characteristics (whether they were slight or strong) but each had their own attitude and aesthetic.

style.com

Of all the Fall 2010 shows, however, Celine, Chloé, Derek Lam, and Reed Krakoff presented looks that were minimal yet so rich in quality and details. The talented designers behind these labels injected subtle notions of menswear detailing.. can you find them? “Menswear-inspired” doesnt always have to mean button-up shirts, boyfriend jeans or trousers! Shapes and fabrics are important too!

Now, how do you translate all of these amazing runway looks into your wardrobe? Online shopping has made it so easy to search for specific items, but thats what I’m here for! I found a few items that will hopefully help you incorporate some great pieces into your wardrobe. And best of all, you can decide how much masculinity you want to shape into your everyday look!

Topshop Ruched Sleeve Blazer, $125.00, Black

J.Crew Denim Utility Shirt-Jacket, $88.00

Chloé Blouse, $192.00 (from $480.00 @ Yoox)

Oliver Peoples, Racine (available at select OP boutiques & stockists)

J.Crew Croquet-stripe caprese tunic, $49.50

Here are some great alternative to classic black oxfords:

J.Crew women’s shoes (Grommet MacAlister Boot, Camden Leather Brogues, G.H. Bass Penny Loafers, Sperry Metallic Boat Shoes)

Happy Monday shopping! : ]

Oh, and dont hesitate to comment/email any future entry suggestions, recommendations, questions, style/shopping inquiries, etc!

Yes, I said it – I’m liking this clog trend…who’s with me?!
