Getting Into Our Skinny Jeans

Getting Into Our Skinny Jeans

Every woman has that one pair of jeans she can only wear when at her thinnest. We certainly do!  So when we heard about TV and film wardrobe stylist Kami Gray’s book The Denim Diet: 16 Simple Habits to Get Into Your Dream Pair of Jeans we knew we had to hear more.

Kami Gray / Author

At 19, you were six sizes larger than you are today. What gave you the initial push to begin living a healthy lifestyle?

I was fat! I was also extremely low on energy, not feeling (or looking!) too well, and my health was beginning to suffer. I had an epiphany. I realized that if I went back to eating the foods I was raised on – organic, whole foods consisting of lean proteins, plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grain carbs, good fats, lower fat dairy, drinking water instead of soda pop, and ditching all the processed, refined, packaged foods, this might all be a thing of my past. I was right! Twenty-three years later, I’m the same size (although thanks to gravity and having kids, things have shifted downward a bit!) as I was when I initially shed the weight and I’ve never looked back. Yes, it’s all common sense and that’s the beauty – we don’t have to think too hard about this thing called eating. Eat real food, not too much of it, and move more.

Why don’t some people maintain a healthy lifestyle? Laziness or they just don’t know better?

I think they don’t recognize how easy it is and are completely confused by all the conflicting information. I also think most people don’t realize that American food manufacturers have taken the food out of our food and replaced it with nasty, cheap, fat-making fillers like high fructose syrup, trans fats, sugar substitutes, modified food starch, and a million (totally exaggerating here!) other fake things. All these ingredients, in one way or another, become the ideal stuffing for your belly, your backside, and your thighs.

Which part of the book is your favorite?

My last chapter is called “EATING AWAY FROM HOME: An Out and About Guide to Healthful Eating.” We are eating out more than ever and it’s tough to navigate all of it and not deviate from our healthful eating efforts. So I’ve created a handy guide for all the places you may find yourself out there in the world from movie theatres to Mexican restaurants to camping to airplane food.

You’re an author, artist, wardrobe stylist and mom.  How do you manage to wear so many hats?
How did you know that I love hats! Kidding aside, I’m not a supermom. The kids come first (although I’m recently living in an empty nest as the kids are both in college) and the rest of what I do are all part-time endeavors. They’re things I’m deeply passionate about so it’s never hard to find time to work since I love what I do. As much as I crave variety in the things I spend my time doing, I also crave balance and spending time with family and friends ranks high on my list as well. It’s so important for us women to make time for ourselves and to have a joyful life – even while we’re raising kids and taking care of life’s other details.

You live in Portland, Oregon.  What is your favorite local restaurant?

I love Higgins. I love it so much that I’ve blogged about it. Everything Greg Higgins puts on his ever-changing menu is made from local, organic, sustainable food and he’s a genius at making it look and taste amazing. It’s not cheap though so I often go during happy hour or dine at that bar.

Clean Up Time: Your Yoga Mat

Clean Up Time: Your Yoga Mat

YogaMat14_ProdLargeSo a conversation with one of our roomies just led us to the question, “how does one clean a yoga mat?” Of course, naturally, we turn to Google and were able to find a great little article on the blog Daily Cup of Yoga and thought we’d share what we found on the chance that you may have pondered the same cleaning question, but not yet found an answer.

If your mat is lightly soiled, use a spray bottle, damp sponge, or terry cloth rag to apply a solution of two cups of water and four drops of dish soap. Rub the soiled areas. Wipe the mat with clean water; then rub with a dry terry cloth towel. Hang to air dry.

If your mat is heavily soiled, submerge it in a solution of warm water and mild detergent; use very little soap as any residue may cause the mat to become slippery during future use. Thoroughly hand wash the mat and rinse in clean water. After squeezing out the excess water, lay the mat on a dry towel and roll the mat and towel together. Stepping on the rolled up mat will squeeze more moisture out of the mat and into the towel. Then unroll and hang to air dry.

The Many Benefits of Breakfast

The Many Benefits of Breakfast

p10cereal2epsWe’ve heard it a million times, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” but how many of us really follow that rule? Personally, I’m obsessed with breakfast and can’t really get through my days anymore without it. Here’s why I love it:

1. I eat less during the day if I start with breakfast. Why? Because I’m not ravenous for lunch by 11:30 and then needing to snack at 3:30. By starting with breakfast, I push back my entire food schedule which makes me eat less (we all know this is great)

2. Breakfast offers so many options! I’m a huge fan of the cereal club. No, it’s not an official club, but it does allow me to feel not so ridiculous when I grocery shop and buy five boxes of different types of ceral at one time. My current favorites? Honey Bunches of Oats with Cinnamon Clusters, Raisin Bran and Granola (with fresh fruit whenever possible). Not a cereal lover? Try oatmeal, fruit or toast.

3. Breakfast makes you feel more energized. When you skip breakfast, the chances of you feeling sluggish before noon pretty much double. And who wants that? We already need coffee to wake us up- why not do more for oursevles whenever possible? Eat breakfast and you’ll do your metabolisim and energy a huge favor.

4. It’s flexible. We’re pretty sure your office offers a fridge or toaster or microwave like ours. So if they do, remember you’re not confined to pounding breakfast before you leave the house in the morning. Take your cereal in a plastic bag and grab a mini carton of milk at the shop near your office. Or, bring bread or an english muffin with a jam jar to toast once you’re settled into your day.

Get in the Know

Get in the Know

You know that feeling you get after you hear about X event that happened and sounded so fun or Y party that you so should have known about, but didn’t get word of? Well a great way to avoid this ever-so-joyful feeling of utter-popularity (sense the sarcasm) is signing up for the e-mail newsletters provided by practically every local publication around these days.

For example, I subscribe to the newsletters from San Francisco Magazine and 7×7 in addition to the obvious ones you already all know about – Daily Candy & UrbanDaddy (if you don’t have an invite to UrbanDaddy and need one- just e-mail me at witwhimsy@gmail.com and I can hook you up!)

The great thing about these newsletters is that they are already on the pulse of what’s happening in the city where you live. They give you advance notice on great things like happy hour deals, food festivals, celebrity events, benefits and so much more. It’s a great way to amp up your social calendar and get outside your normal realm of activities. Plus, it’s way easier than scouring through the pub’s calendar of events listed on the websites because, let’s be honest, who has time to do that?

Visit the website for your local magazines & newspapers & sign up today- get in the know. It’s so much better to be that way! :)

Compliments Where Compliments Are Due

Compliments Where Compliments Are Due
If you know me well, you know I am not afraid to voice my opinion. Yes, sometimes this can create a foot in mouth situation, but on other occasions I like to think that sharing my thoughts is making this world a better place (right? right? oh humor me :) )

Anyways, I truly believe that it is so worth it to take a few minutes to dish out compliments or, give credit where credit is due. When I have had a sales person go above and beyond, I ask for their manager and tell them what a wonderful experience they provided me. When a company has gone the extra mile for its customers, I thank them.
Today was one such day. I subscribe to SELF Magazine editor, Lucy Danziger’s blog and had thought to myself on the plane this past Saturday as I paged through the most recent SELF issue, “God, I love this magazine.” I decided to let Lucy know it. She replied promptly and asked whether I would mind if they used my casual complimentary note as a Letter to the Editor (that is TBD!) This let me know she appreciated what I had said and there are countless times in each of our lives that we can do this- make people feel worthwhile & special.
If you pay attention in your day, take advantage of all those opportunities to say “thank you” or “what you do is fantastic and I am grateful for it.”Compliments are always welcome- just remember how they make you feel when you get them- now give that feeling to someone else!
