The Netflix of reading?

The Netflix of reading?

We fashionistas and beauty mavens have had a great year of fun reads including books by Nina Garcia (whom we love) and Chelsea Handler’s hilarious and TMI reads.

A service we just learned about, BookSwim functions as the Netflix of books or an electronic version of a library that lets you check out books, read them & then send them back. Ah, we love such smart little services.

And get this: for the holidays, BookSwim is offering $10 gift certificates to everyone to get them started with the service. You can even print as many $10 gift certificates as you’d like to insert into a card or you can email them to a friend.

And our favorite part of the service? Free shipping on all your rentals.

The Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide…on your iPhone?

The Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide…on your iPhone?

Whilst we can hardly believe it, the holidays are upon us and suddenly we’re wondering what should be on our lists…both for ourselves, but more importantly others. Tis the season of giving, is it not?!

To make our lives easier, NearbyNow has launched the ultimate Holiday Gift Guide that compiles the holiday gift selections from our favorite magazines and select retailers, like Nordstrom & Macy’s, all into one application available at your fingertips. Gift Guides from Cosmo, Marie Claire, Seventeen All You, Real Simple, Sunset, Details, Southern Living and Cooking Light magazines are all included.
Once you’ve downloaded the app (if you have iTunes on your computer, you can download it by clicking here), users search and find products they wish to investigate further or purchase, then simply tap the “Find Nearby” button and let the app’s concierge service go to work, ensuring the item you want is in stock at your nearest store.

Finally, you are greeted by an email verification that notifies you can head to your local store that has the item in stock and check it out and decide whether it’s perfect for that person on your gift list. You can also choose to purchase the item online.

We just love little genius ideas like this. Especially when they help take the stress out of the holidays- leaving more time for mulled wine, cookies and parties!

Gucci Walks the App Store Runway

Gucci Walks the App Store Runway

One of the holy grails of fashion, Gucci,  has stepped into the Apple App store with the launch of their free App for the iPhone and iTouch.

Frida Giannini worked directly with Mark Ronson to create several of the app’s coolest features like Gucci Beats (where you can mix your own music tracks and share with friends) and personal playlists by Frida and Mark. The App also has a music stream channel, the Gucci Little Black Book city guide, along with all the latest fashion shows, look books and news from Gucci.

Social Network Makeover

Social Network Makeover

d_200910_event_socialnetwork_imgYesterday thanks to Nichelle Pace aka StyleMom, we came across Estée Lauder’s newest “social media” campaign/event and we have to say, it’s quite brilliant on their part. Their new event – with the slogan Your Beauty. Your Style. Your Profile – is crossing the USA with special makeover sessions at a handful of Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue stores that are  targeted to give you a makeover + photo to post to your social network profile, blog, Twitter, etc.

What we love most about this is its embracing social media by recognizing people are putting energy into the creation of a personal brand. Plus, we think it’s a great way to kickstart the Estée Lauder brand which until now has maintained an image of being for the older woman. Hot on the heels of the discontinuation of the Perscriptives brand, this is a step in the right direction…

Epicurious on the Go

Epicurious on the Go

epicuriousapp

Recently we came across a great iPhone app that will change your life….well cooking life that is. Courtesy of the people who bring you Epicurious, their iPhone app (also for the iPod touch) is so great,  you’ll get off your tush  and to the store in search of ingredients for the recipes.

We downloaded the app (for free!) a few weeks back and have been experimenting with the recipes since. What’s particularly great about this app is you can search for recipes by ingredient, meal type, cuisine – you name it. There are even categories for weeknight dinners, healthy snacks and cocktail recipes. For instance, we have a bottle of elderflower concentrate we want to include in a cocktail, we searched “elderflower’ and voila – up came a handful or cocktail recipes we could create with elderflower as an ingredient. Love it!

As for the other features? The app gives you the ability to save recipes in your virtual recipe box and transfer ingredients into a shopping list. Can you say genius? Perfect for the girl on the go who is trying to spread her culinary wings. We’re seriously addicted to this app, in fact, we just created a shopping list for three weeknight dinners we want to try. Now it’s just a matter of gathering the stamina to hit Trader Joe’s after work… le sigh.
