Get the Look: Amy Adams' Chignon

Get the Look: Amy Adams' Chignon

There are many times we wish we had a personal stylist upon whom we could call to get the perfect outfit, the prettiest up-do and the fresh, dewy makeup look. Alas, woe is us. Not really though :) Especially when we can have experts like hair stylist to the stars, Moulay Yacoubi provide us tops on DIY hair looks!

New York’s exclusive Pierre Michel Salon just re-located to a gorgeous, 10,000 sq. ft. loft location and better yet, the salon is offering a 20% discount to celebrate the new launch now through March 31st, 2010!

Moulay is one of the best hair stylists out there and also recently served as a judge on Bravo’s hit hair competition “Shear Genius.” Moulay’s work has graced the cover of major magazines in both Paris and the U.S. He has styled many celebrities that we adore including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Amy Adams.

Just in time for holiday parties and New Year’s eve, Moulay was kind enough to provide tips to WIT & Whimsy readers on how to achieve Amy Adams’ gorgeous chignon seen here that she graced this past year’s Academy Awards for which she was nominated for her role in Doubt.

Check them out here! And send us a pic if you try the style- you could end up featured on WIT & Whimsy!

1. Wash hair and prep the hair with medium hold mousse.

2. Dry the hair, parting it to one side with a comb.

3. Comb through the top of the hair so that it is smooth and flat against the head.

4. Gather the hair into a low ponytail on the parted side and secure it with an elastic band.

5. Twist the ponytail into a loose bun and secure it with an elastic hairband the same color as the hair.

6. Using finger tips “fluff up” the top of the hair to add some volume.

7. Finish with a shine serum. (WIT & Whimsy recommends Bumble & Bumble defrizz serum seen here.)

Tips on Caring for Tights: They keep your legs warm, so return the favor and take care of them

Tips on Caring for Tights: They keep your legs warm, so return the favor and take care of them

There’s little worse than waking up on a chilly morning and putting on a colorful pair of tights that you’ve only worn twice only to find a run in them. It’s happened to us on more than one occasion and it really puts us in a scroogey mood!

Sure tights are economical compared to your other garments, but that doesn’t mean that you should have to buy a few new pairs each month because they’re ripped. It’s just the principle of it.

Here are some tips to help you care for your tights so you get more than two to three uses out of them:

  1. Use hairspray after you’ve put them on to strengthen the fibers. This also helps prevent your skirts and dresses from sticking to your thighs.
  2. Unless you’re exercising in your leggings 80s style, you don’t need to wash your tights after each wear. If you are exercising in your leggings – we’d love to hear from you on rockin’ it at the gym!
  3. Don’t throw your tights in the washer. Ever. Even if they’re machine washable, it’s better to soak them in the sink with some detergent and warm water and then lay them flat to dry. Don’t wring them out over and over again and watch your fingernails when wringing to prevent a snag.
  4. Fold them nicely in thirds and place in your drawer. It’s an obvious tip, but it will help your tights last longer as opposed to crunching them together in a ball.
  5. We’ve all been taught how to properly and gently put on a pair of tights. Sit down, roll up one foot at a time – your mom taught you how to do it. Yet you should also make sure you’re taking the same precautions when taking off your tights.
  6. Keep some clear nail polish on hand. If you notice a ladder starting while mid-cocktail, put a dab on and pray it won’t get bigger.
  7. Quality does matter. We’re not saying you need to buy a $40 pair of tights, but do keep in mind that tights with Lycra and thicker fibers will last longer. We love DKNY’s Opaque Coverage Control line (only $14.50 a pair), as well as SPANX (for more than one reason).

Do any of you have other tips on caring for tights? We’d love to hear them.

Shoshanna tells ladies how to work it this holiday season

Shoshanna tells ladies how to work it this holiday season

One of our designer crushes, Shoshanna is offering up her expertise on how to get through all the party outfits all of us ladies need this time of year! We were super happy to see she’s in agreement with WIT & Whimsy on sparkle and statement necklaces this season!

Check out all of her tips below!

What is best to wear for your different holiday parties this year?

Family Affair: A pretty dress with an embellished neckline or embroidery, something you can throw a cardigan over, move around and have fun in.

Office Party: Simple shift or sheath dress that will take you from a day at the office to the party that night, with a change shoes and accessories.

Girls Night Out: A great strapless dress in a bold color like a violet or red is perfect. Add a cropped leather jacket or blazer to give it some edge.

What is the must-have accessory to spice up any outfit?

I think a statement necklace is the ultimate piece to pair with a dress for the season. It can instantly change an outfit.

What are the key dress trends to look for this holiday season?

Bright Bold Colors

Sequin and Shine

Embellished Necklines

How do you take your daytime outfit from the office to a holiday party?

Start with a simple dress shape, like a shift that can act as your blank canvas. During the day keep it simple with flats and delicate jewelry. Slip into fabulously high heels, and throw on a pair of great earrings or a vintage necklace for the office party later that evening.

How do you find the best dress for flattering your body type?

You have to find a shape that works for you and stick with it. Try on every shape you can until you find the one you are most comfortable in and shows off your best assets.

What are some ways to up the glamour of your favorite little black dress for the holiday season?

Accessories are the best way to glam up a LBD. You can use so many different kinds of colorful jewelry to stand out, play around and have fun with it. Also, a bright bold lip is a great way to spice up an outfit.

What in one must-have holiday piece that can be worn for every party occasion this season?

I think the perfect dress for any occasion is a simple shift- you can wear it so many ways (from a day at the office to a party at night) and make it look like a different dress with a change of accessories. It’s my go to dress for every holiday party this season.

What are your personal DOS and DON’TS for holiday party dressing?

NO Holiday Sweaters

DO Have Fun with Color

DON’T Be Afraid to Stand Out

DO Shop Your Closet- Mix and Match Old Pieces with New

Sugar Sweet

Sugar Sweet

It’s official, today is the first day of Autumn. As we say “goodbye” to the sun, sand, and sunburn, we say “hello” to Shea, sugar, and scrubs!  Tree Hut just launched a new collection of Shea Sugar Body Scrubs that will leave your body refreshed and rejuvenated from a season of sun and sand.  Our favorite scrub may have to be the Tahitian Grass scub that’s promises to “delight your senses as you smooth your skin with this rich, exfoliating sugar body scrub.” The new collection  contains evening primrose oil and avocado oil. All WITs should own at least a tub (or two) of sugar scrubs in their showers to achieve luminous and soft skin, particularly after scrubbing with Tree Hut products that all contain organic moisturizers and Shea butter.  Go on, wash up!
