modman monday 09 : hail to dvf.

Diane von Furstenberg is best known for her wrap dress, amazing prints and out-of-the box collaborations (DVF + Mini, DVF & the Rockettes at the Vienna Life Ball, and DVF designed hospital gowns). The latest collaboration with HP just goes to show how tech saavy the brand is.

Fashion’s Night Out 2010 and Fashion Week SS2011 was a great success, especially for DVF. DVF and HP partnered up to bring shoppers a fully loaded multimedia experience beyond imagination, rightly titled The DVF + HP Experience Lounge, in partnership with Refinery29. On Friday night, shoppers had their pictures taken in a custom DVF Fashion’s Night Out photobooth, had images printed and sent to their emails and uploaded onto DVF’s Facebook page. HP Touch Screens were installed to showcase DVF’s Fall 2010 and Resort collections. HP technology allowed people to literally thumb through the collections, break down each look into individual pieces that reflected price and rating. At the end, shoppers could print their favorite runway pieces at the HP computer and printer bar. The best technology assets of the DVF + HP Experience Lounge were the screens that featured #FNO and #DVFLounge Twitter, DVF Facebook and Refinery29 article feeds. How crazy is that?

DVF was at headquarters for a majority of the night, partying with shoppers and DJ-ing with model & face of DVF, Eliza Sednaoui. Shoppers went crazy and every time she walked through the store, cameras, iPhones, Blackberrys and Flips filled the air. Molly Sims, Alison Brie, Olivia Palermo and Anna Wintour stopped by the popular venue throughout the night, giving interviews to NY1 and other outlets.

Friday night was a blast, but I called in for a fairly early night as I had to get back to the DVF + HP Experience Lounge for the CFDA “Whats New in Accessories” Tweet Up on Saturday.

The DVF/CFDA event featured accessories designers Alexis Bittar, Philip Crangi, Dean Harris, Alejandro Ingelmo and Albertus Swanepoel with Harper’s Bazaar Accessories Director, Ana Maria Pimentel and moderator and CFDA Executive Director, Steven Kolb. Many of the panelists brought the ‘lols’ with their responses. The most important take-away for me from the panel was “do what you love”. These designers are truly gifted and their artwork clearly reflect their passion.

The final DVF event was the Live Stream Viewing Party on Sunday afternoon. Exclusive guests were invited to watch the DVF show at the DVF + HP Experience Lounge, complete with catering and bar. The atmosphere was fun and everyone had a great time mingling and gathering around HP screens to watch the DVF show live stream. There was no better way to end the event-filled weekend! I’ve reported on LA, SF and New York DVF Fashion’s Night Out events in my past two posts and The DVF + HP Experience Lounge was a success. Bravo to the new collection and the trailblazing initiative! Check out the new DVF Spring/Summer 2011 Goddess collection here, in addition to the current Fall/Winter 2010 pieces now available for purchase.

Getting to know Jimmy Choo’s Tamara Mellon

One of my fashion bibles is Harper’s Bazaar. And one of the lust-worthy brands I adore is Jimmy Choo which is why it is so lovely when two such wonderful things come together in one like the current issue of Bazaar. In it, Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon opens the doors to her new New York apartment, and discusses her new life.

Looking at her shoe closet in the magazine, one phrase comes to mind and it’s that of Rachel Zoe’s, “I Die.” Because honestly, look at this. Could one’s shoe karma be any more amazing?!

Douglas Friedman for Harper's Bazaar

In the article, Tamara takes readers on a tour of her home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a mix of high art and glam minimalism, and poses with her daughter, Minty. In the interview, she opens up about her lifestyle, overcoming challenges, and building the Jimmy Choo empire.

On her new life in New York: “Last year was the best and worst year of my life, a breakthrough year for me,” Mellon explains. “I’ve moved here and managed to clear up a lot of the wreckage. I feel like I’ve arrived in New York with a clean slate, and I have a whole new set of challenges ahead of me. And I find that invigorating.”

On building the Jimmy Choo empire: “I’ve paid my dues in this business,” she says. She started working when she was 18 at the London fashion emporium Browns. “At the time, I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I hate this!’ But the lesson I learned was so valuable: I learned retail.” She later met Jimmy Choo, a London cobbler, and the rest is a fashion fairy tale. “But still, when someone asks about a career in fashion, I say start at the bottom,” she says. “If you want to start a business, you have to know it from the ground up.”

You can read the interview in full here, but highly recommend picking up a copy to see all the drool-worthy photos from Tamara’s incredible apartment.
