Classic Black Bags
  1. Alexander Wang Emile Satchel
  2. Alexander Wang Pelican tote
  3. Phillip Lim Pashli tote
  4. Phillip Lim Pashli messenger

Alright y’all. The time has come for me to dive into a new, classic black bag that I’ll use forever and that’s also sturdy enough for frequent travel and those nights I have to bring home my work laptop to my home office but would rather not tote it home in one of those practical yet hideous beige canvas totes. You hear me?

That being said, I’ve narrowed down my options to those above. I’ve been saving up some shopping credits and will continue doing so but what say you? Thoughts on a favorite? Perhaps you own one and can let me know based on experience?

I’d love to hear what you think! (And p.s. thanks in advance).

  1. Well- they are all gorgeous but I like the little accents on the bottom of the emile so I feel like I’d go for that since it could be dressed up or down. Can’t go wrong with any of them though- keep us posted!

I love the Phillip Lim Pashli satchel but I feel like everyone and their mom has one. The Alexander Wang Pelican tote is chic and great for an every day bag. Plus it’s a little fancier than the every day bag! I’d personally opt for that one!

Good luck choosing! Can’t wait to see which one you pick!

I would got with either the Alexander Wang Tote or the Philip Lin Tote. They are both nice, but I think the Pelican Tote is probably the more polished choice. Not that they aren’t ALL lovely!! May I express my extreme envy?

  4. Okay girl, this is a big purchase! I agree that it feels like “everyone” has the Pashli these days, but keep in mind that the Internet isn’t your day-to-day life. What feels totally tired on Pinterest might not feel that way on your arm as you stroll up 5th Avenue. Then again, I was *obsessed* with it for a long time, then all the female Internet celebrities got it and now it feels as overdone as cupcakes.

Personally, I love those Wang bags, and they feel a little more covert to me. Though god knows every model-off-duty in Soho knows what those little gold corners mean. Whatever. Of these, the Emile is my favorite for it’s classic-meets-edgy appeal, one that I think will stand the test of time after the zippers and million colorways of the Pashli have had their moment.

Can’t wait to see what you pick! xo

My Pashli tote is the best thing I’ve bought myself in a while (it secretly fits a huge amount of stuff) and while I do see them occasionally out and about in NYC, I don’t see them as often as the internet would predict– and always get compliments on it. Highly recommend.

I LOVE that Pashli bag! For what you are looking for-a classic black bag that can also serve as a carry-all, I think it’s a great fit! You really can’t go wrong with any of those choices, but I’d opt for the Pashli. It’s so stunning.

  7. Annabelle says:

Those are all great bags, but I think I’d lean to the Emile, with the Pelican a close second.

Mine is an older Alexander McQueen that’s lousy with pockets and zippers because I’m a sucker for that kind of thing. I still totally love it!

  8. LOVE the Phillip Lim Pashli tote – the shape is so classic and it looks like it will meet all of your needs (sturdy, chic, etc.)
