The Best Sezane Essentials

Sezane Ralph Jacket Fall Monochrome Outfit

I love that my favorite French clothing brand Sézane has an edited selection of Essentials that they keep in stock and curated year round. They serve as great building blocks for your wardrobe and as I own many of them, I’m able to share styling and sizing advice on many of them.

In my many years of shopping the brand (first in France before they came to the United States), I have amassed many of their essential pieces and I reach for them time and time again so today I thought I’d share an updated review of each of my favorites with styling inspiration and size details.

These are quality pieces that will age well and can be mixed and matched to make a myriad of outfits.

ABOUT SÉZANE

Created in Paris in 2013 by Morgane Sézalory, Sézane refers to themselves as the first French fashion brand born online. They design beautiful pieces that are meant to last and that you’ll want to pass on someday. They aim to focus on responsible and ethical production so you won’t find them over-producing and marking things down. They very rarely discount so the prices that you see are usually what they are.

The brand has committed to using eco-friendly materials (3/4 of their materials are considered eco-friendly as of 2021), reducing the amount of packaging used and they have recycled more than 13,000 pieces through their recycling program. More than 13 000 pieces have been recycled. The brand also has a philanthropic program called DEMAIN (this means tomorrow in French) which has raised millions of euros and works to support dozens of charitable organizations and thousands of children.

The Best Sézane Essentials

Sezane Trench coat with Striped Sweater Paris Outfit

Sézane Scott Trench Coat

This is a classic trench coat. It has a flattering fit and all the classic details you want such as a tie waist and lapel collar. I love the camel color and thoughtful details on this well-made investment piece that I know I’ll wear for a long, long time.

I size up in all Sézane Coats usually but I got this in my true to size size 6 (FR38) and it fits perfectly. It is designed to be a bit oversized which I appreciate as it makes it easy to layer over little jackets or bulkier sweaters.

In addition to the classic camel color, it also comes in a navy and a green.

This is one of my most worn coats and it always gets compliments. It is of course waterproof as well.

Sézane Gaspard Sweater

My #1 Sézane essential is this versatile sweater. I’ve amassed a collection of four colors now. I love wearing it both frontwards and backwards. It goes great with jeans, with printed pants and can also be worn over dresses or paired with skirts. Thanks to its lightweight weave it is also great thrown over your shoulders during cooler summer evenings.

It’s so feminine and I love the fit on it. I wear it in a size Small but you could take your usual size for a more oversized fit. This is the only Sézane piece of clothing I have ever sized down in.

The Gaspard also now comes in a darling stripe that I had to have.

Sezane Fall Collection I wit & whimsy

Sézane Johnson Coat

This coat is so beautifully tailored and a timeless silhouette. The sand color is a beautiful neutral but they also offer it in other colors as well. I recently added the black to my coat collection.

I reach for this coat often in Fall before temperatures really drop. If you live somewhere it doesn’t get super cold, it would make a wonderful winter coat for you.

I sized up to a size 8 as I find it runs a bit tight in the arms/shoulders.

Sezane Christie Blazer

Sezane Michele Jacket

I own this blazer-jacket from Sezane in the beautiful navy (see below) and love the fit of it so when I saw the new wool charcoal drop as part of the Fall Arrivals in 2023, I snagged it right away.

Wearing a size 6.

Sezane Michele Jacket Navy Blazer

Sezane James Coat Fall Outfit

Sezane James Coat

I love this modern take on a peacoat-esque style. It’s similar to a blazer as well with its lapel and buttons and pockets and I just think it is so chic. The thick material is beautifully tailored and I love the navy color I chose. They have it in a few other colors as well.

This runs a bit oversized so I took my usual size of size 6. If you plan to wear it with thicker knits I’d size up.

J.Crew Trousers Paris Outfit

Sezane Louise Jumper

This sweater is a great staple piece. It has cuffed sleeves with subtle buttons and I’ve worn the black so much I bought the beige, too.

I own it in a size small as I found the initial runs of it to be oversized but there latest colors fit more true to size I have found. I now own this in three colors.

French Girl Style Striped Tee I wit & whimsy

Sézane Colette Marinière Striped Tee

No essential French wardrobe is complete without a striped tee and the Sézane Colette tee is just as close to perfection as you’d expect. I adore my ecru/camel color but they of course also offer a classic ercu/navy as well as other seasonal color combinations from time to time as well.

It’s great on its own or layered under sweaters or blazers or cardigans. I am wearing a size M.

You can also now get your Colette tee personalized – too.cute! And such a good gift idea as well.

Sézane Tomboy Button Down

It’s often hard for me to find well-fitting button downs but my search ended when I found the Sézane Tomboy button down shirt. It’s the perfect fit and not too stuffy of a fabric.

It’s more-so a lived-in cotton fabric that takes down the formal factor in the style. I sized up to an 8 in this style.

In addition to the white they also have a blue and a striped version.

MM.LaFleur Jardigan Review I wit & whimsy

Sézane Conrad T-Shirt

Looking for a good basic tee that holds up? The Sézane Conrad tee is great. I took my usual size of a Medium but recommend sizing up if you like your tees a bit roomier.

It comes in a variety of classic neutrals.

Seen here styled with The MM.LaFleur Jardigan.

Sezane Victor Bag

Sézane Victor Bag

This bag is surprisingly roomy and is easy to dress up or dress down. Sézane has made this bag for years and you’ll see it all over the streets of Paris. They offer it in a variety of colors and textures.

Sezane Sweater Jacket

Sézane Betty Cardigan

An instant bestseller when it launched, this is Sezane’s take on the cardigan jacket. I loved mine in Ecru so much I bought the Navy right after. And then the black! And then an ivory crochet version!

The knit material is so, so nice and I love this paired with jeans and with trousers. I find myself reaching for it constantly and often travel in it as well.

This style has been so popular for the brand they are regularly introducing new colors and spins on it.

I sized up to a L in this style.

I wore the style so much that I bought similar ones they introduced including the Valerio Jacket and the Auguste Jacket. Both size L.

Sezane Christie Jacket

Sézane Christie Jacket

A beautiful blazer that has such a nice material and wears really well either with matching pants as a suit or more casually as I did with jeans.

I took an 8 in it. It comes in so many colors and the brand often does seasonal drops of it as well such as a tartan during the holiday season. I recently added the black to my rotation as well!

Sezane Eyelet Dress Spring Summer Outfit

Mini Milo Bag

An instant classic, this Sezane bag is sleek, timeless and comes in a variety of sizes and colors. I have the mini in the cognac color and the regular size in black (see below). I love that you can adjust the strap length as well!

A great shoulder bag that is timeless, looks and feels designer and can easily be dressed up or dressed down.

It comes in a variety of colors.

Sezane Will Jacket

Will Jacket

You’ll see women all over France wearing this jacket. It’s a lightweight, stylish take on the chore jacket. It’s great for Spring weather and early Fall.

I took this in a size M.

Sezane Ralph Blazer

Sezane Ralph Jacket

This wool oversized blazer jacket has been in constant rotation since I added it to my collection in Fall 2023. Part outerwear, part blazer and so chic.

Wearing a size 6.

Sezane Fall Boots

Sezane Adele Boots

A beautifully made, knee-high boot that has room in the calf but doesn’t read slouchy.

Meghan Donovan Home Tour

Sezane Sandy Skirt

I consider a slip skirt a wardrobe essential and Sezane really perfected it. I own it in several colors including this beautiful sand color. It is great with boots in particular.

I sized up to a size 8.

Sezane Lace Blouse

Sezane Lace Blouses

Sezane always is offering 2-3 beautiful lace blouses throughout the year and I have amassed a collection of them. They are so beautifully made and delicate looking.

I always size up to an 8. If you’re looking for them on site they are often referred to as “Eglatine” or something similar to refer to the lace style.

Sezane Navy Coat La Ligne Striped Sweater Inez Boots London Outfit Fall

Sezane Mederick Coat

A great wrap coat this is made from fabric that isn’t too heavy making it ideal for Fall and late Winter. I like the subtle details in its style and the fit is true to size. I own it in 6 in the Navy but it comes in a variety of colors.

. . .

Invest in these Essential pieces and you’ll always have a French style outfit you love for any occasion.

A word on Sézane sizing:

I find nearly all French brands to run a bit snug so I always size up. Especially if you have a bigger chest as many French brands don’t design for larger chests. If you’re unsure on sizing, I recommend ordering two sizes to be sure as Sézane offers free return shipping.

The brand has expanded sizing in recent years on select items and I’m hopeful they’ll continue to do so.

I love them all! I wear the Colette striped tee all the time (saw it on you first!), and I’ve recently become intrigued by the Sezane swimwear.

HI, was planning on buying the scott trench coat for my Girlfriend. Shes 5′ 6″ about 135 pounds. Do you have any idea if that would be close to like a size 6/8 US?

  3. Hollie says:

Do you know if the trench coat is rain resistant? Some trenches are, others aren’t, and Sezanne’s site does not specify. Thanks!

  4. Megan says:

To be honest with you, I’m not sure how sustainable or responsible of a brand they are, at least any more. They are constantly coming out with new collections… it’s almost nonstop nowadays. I think maybe they were both of these things in the past, but not now.
