Cute Trench Coats for Fall

A trench coat is a timeless staple that I believe every person should have in their wardrobe. Every Fall I look forward to pulling out my collection and donning them for crisp Fall days –  rain or no rain. They’re the perfect layering piece during the transition from summer into Fall and I love how versatile they are. The styling options are endless and these coats are wardrobe staples for me.

Today’s post is dedicated to the trench coat and cute ones you can wear with your Fall outfits.

Looking for trench coats for women? Look no further! And don’t miss the shopping widgets at the bottom of the post where I’ve rounded up even more styles and colors at every price point.

In case you’re looking to upgrade your trench or just want some fresh ways to style the one you already own – I hope you’ll find today’s post inspiring.

J.Crew Icon Trench

The Classic Trench Coat

The J.Crew Icon trench coat is the perfect classic trench. A structured collar, breasted buttons and a tie waist make this jacket full of the details we all want in a trench. I love the dichotomy of a super classic trench like this one with distressed denim.

Add sleek white sneakers and a striped tee and you’re ready to hit the streets of Paris – or just pretend you are! This is one of my most tried and true ways to style a classic trench coat.

This one is a short trench coat style so is ideal for those of us on the shorter side or if you’re petite – I think this one is a petite friendly trench coat. I’m wearing a size 6.

The latest version of this trench comes with a removable hood which I love. I now have that version and the OG (seen above).

Cute Trench Coats for Fall - Sezane Scott Trench

The Oversized Trench Coat

Less fitted trench coats can be great as layering pieces. The Sezane Scott Trench I am wearing above is ideal for layering over blazers and my leather jacket when temperatures are cooler. I love the details on this jacket – it has a large lapel collar, raglan sleeves, a button line on both the shoulders and on the cuffs and a buttoned slit in the middle of the back. The waist belt is removable and it’s made out of cotton so it’s not overly delicate.

This jacket comes in a classic camel as I am wearing but also a beautiful green and another classic: navy. I am wearing a size 6.

I love pairing this traditional trench coat with jeans but also think a printed pant is a fun pairing, too as seen here:

Cute Trench Coats for Fall - the Drapey Trench

The Drapey Trench Coat

Perfect for packing and taking with you when you travel, a drapey trench coat is a laid back style of this classic jacket. I love to pair my drapey trench with a cropped straight jean that hits high on your waist will add length to your shape when paired with kitten heels and an extra drapey trench coat like the Everlane Drape Trench styled here. This is another great drapey option.

I sized down to a size Small.

I also have it in a classic beige trench color:

The Menswear Inspired Trench Coat

A trench coat is a great coat to top over more formal business wardrobes like black pants and heels or loafers. I paired this menswear inspired style by MM.LaFleur with loafers and would lose the beret if I was headed to a meeting. It’s on the longer side and has a baggier silhouette along with traditional details like button cuffs and double breasted styling. While this specific trench is sold out, this one from Mango is a great option.

I sized down to a size Small.

The Pop of Pattern Trench

If you like color or pattern, look for a trench coat that has a fun, bold lining or pattern on the collar like the one above.

I love a striking camel trench paired with a great pair of pumps in black. So sleek and can be styled a myriad of ways. In this look I had distressed denim, but could also have done straight jeans or ankle length cropped jeans.

This trench is from Ted Baker in 2015.

The Colored Trench Coat

Not all trench coats need to be the classic beige or camel color. You can add a fun twist by wearing a trench coat in a color like this beautiful sage one.

My trench coats come back in rotation when summer concludes and I begin layering them over my favorite sweaters and swapping out my shoes for my favorite booties.

The above trench is from Club Monaco who makes excellent outerwear (I bought it back in 2015) but Sézane has a similar colorway in their Scott Trench. Everlane and GAP both have lovely olive green trench coats.

Bash Cropped Trench Coat

The Cropped Trench Coat

For days where you don’t need a water resistant jacket reaching to or past your knees, a cropped trench is a cute and more casual style to opt for.

Seen wearing the Bash Paris Winnie Jacket (unfortunately sold out) in size M. J.Crew offers a similar style. This cropped version from Madewell is a bit sportier.

Rainy Day Style I wit & whimsy

The Hooded Trench Coat

For truly rainy days where you need to avoid getting wet, you’ll want to consider a rain coat like a hooded trench coat. I’m a US 6 or 8 in Barbour who makes the style above I’ve had since 2018. This hooded coat from Tuckernuck would be great for some serious rain.

I love the coats you highlighted! I actually just posted on my blog about wearing my mother’s trench coat–it’s such a classic staple, and I love being able to remember her when wearing it. I’ll definitely have to bookmark this post so I can recreate some of your styling, too!

Hi, wondering about your thoughts on Burberry trench coats? Crazy expensive these days but curious about your thoughts on shape/cuts?

Hi! No plans to do so as of now. But maybe one day! I usually splurge on shoes, cashmere sweaters and bags as I wear those things the most frequently!
