How to Define Your Cheek Bones

wit & whimsy I how to define your cheekbones

I’ve always loved covering beauty on wit & whimsy because ever since I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with trying out beauty products. My shower is far too full with shampoos, conditioners, masks, facial scrubs, facial washes…you name it. And my cabinets are bursting with lotions, masks, toners and eye creams. Then my dresser is not-so-neatly home to loads of cosmetics because testing out so many is such fun but finding favorites to use on my day to day is even better.

How to Define Your Cheek Bones:

Today I’m sharing how I add definition to my cheek bones. Not all of us were blessed with killer Karlie Kloss high cheek bones so I have been experimenting with layering several products to define my cheeks and start to get the hang of cheekbone contouring. (A good video about contouring was included in this post.) I also suffer from the dreaded double chin so adding more definition to my cheek bones helps to create the illusion of a longer, leaner face.

These are products I recommend for my personal face shape which is oval. But given we’re all born with different bone structure just evaluate what may work best for your cheek bones.

For the base:

  1. BareMinerals BARESKIN: This is my favorite foundation (read more about it here) and creates a great base while not being thick or too makeup-y in appearance. It is great for when you’re having photos taken, in particular. Apply it with a foundation brush.
  2. Clarins Instant Light Brush On Perfector: Brush on around your eyes to hide dark circles and then follow up with concealer.
  3. Bobbi Brown Concealer Duo: I use the concealer and corrector around my eyes (after the Clarins perfector) and also on any red spots or blemishes. More on it here.
  4. BareMinerals READY Pressed Powder: I set my face with this powder.
  5. Physicians Formula Powder Bronzer: The best bronzer on the market and the price can’t be beat. I dust this across my face to give it some color.

Of note, I used the new Eco Tools Complexion Collection to apply the products I used. The foundation brush is particularly good.

To define your cheeks:

  1. Tarte Cheek Stain: I first swipe on this cheek stain and blend it in with a condensed-bristle brush. I actually didn’t like this stain at all the first time I used it. It’s natural to the point that I felt like it wasn’t doing the trick. It was then that I started to layer (outlined below) that I got the true benefit of it as a color pop on your cheeks. I recommend going to a Sephora and testing a few of the shades and asking to layer a blush on top so you know which you like best for your skin tone.
  2. Benefit Cosmetics Dallas: I add this as the first layer over the Tarte cheek stain. It contours (remember to close your mouth and suck in your cheeks as you apply) and blend well so you don’t get the terrifying line on your face that a darker blush can sometimes create.
  3. Clarins Illuminating Blush: As a final step, I’m in love with this blush. It adds this really amazing glow for that lit-from-within look.
  4. Urban Decay Setting Spray: If you’re not using a makeup setting spray before you head out the door…START! It is a game changer. Particularly in summer. If I had a secret arsenal, this would be in it (alongside these.) Spray it on as a final step and you’ll set your hard work and be good to go from a.m. to p.m.

Once you finish, be sure to tilt your head in the mirror on either side to ensure your products are all well blended out and you don’t have any harsh lines.

For even more cheek bone definition and higher cheekbones you can look at dermal filler or cosmetic procedures – but those aren’t for me…*yet*! You can also look at facial exercises for your face and jaw to help naturally provide a little lift.

There you have it…hope you enjoy and find these tips helpful!
