Paris Montmartre Guide

Montmartre is a unique neighborhood in Paris and truly so charming thanks to its cobblestone streets, sweeping views of the city, winding streets and picturesque staircases. Set in the 18th arrondissement, Montmartre is often referred to as La Butte as it is on a hilltop in Paris.

A Guide to Paris’s Montmartre Neighborhood

Montmartre was formerly an artists’ village – home to Picasso and Dali and today you’ll still see some artists at work in the neighborhood’s various squares. Of course Montmartre is most well known for the Sacré-Cœur basilica which towers over the neighborhood and plays host to many a local and a tourist hanging out on its stairs.

I’ve been to Montmartre many times and used to live in a neighborhood adjacent to it so today I am sharing some of my favorite things to do and spots to visit when in the 18th.

I think Montmartre is best enjoyed on a clear day so you can take in the panoramic views it offers and I personally love to spend an afternoon there when the neighborhood becomes to vibrant and lively.

Pro tip for your visit: You’ll want to be sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes as many of the streets are cobblestones and you’ll be walking lots of hills!

View Paris from Sacré-Cœur

There’s a wonderful overlook in front of Sacré-Cœur and it is also a spectacular place to take in the sunset as well. It gets crowded so go early to get the best photos. You can also visit inside the basilica to marvel at the architecture – completed in 1914.

Wander Rue Lepic

This charming street has loads of shops and cafes to enjoy – including Café des Deux Moulins made famous by the film Amélie.

Isn’t Montmatre famous for the Moulin Rouge?

Oh my gosh, Pain Pain is the best. I still dream about the treats we got there. The wall of love (Le mur des je t’aime) was something fun we stumbled upon that I knew nothing about beforehand. Got some great pictures there.

One of my very favorite pictures from my first and only trip to Paris (in 2019) was of my daughter standing right about where your shot of Rue Lepic was taken! We were on our way to Jeanne B (also in the shot) on a warm August evening. It was the last night of our trip and it was the perfect ending. (Looks like it has since closed though.)
