My Nighttime Skincare Routine

One Blogger's Nighttime Skincare Routine I step by step

I will admit that I am borderline neurotic when it comes to my nighttime skincare routine. The only instances when I really veer off of it is when I am traveling and it is harder to keep up with the various steps. Other than that though, I am dedicated to it because my skin has radically improved as a result. I remember battling acne for so long – into my mid-20s even. It was always such a blow to my self-confidence and I was left flying through concealer as I attempted to cover up my insecurities that were on display for all to see.

What I learned is that when you find a routine and stick to it, the dedication pays off. I found a good dermatologist who doesn’t mess around and moves onto a new solution when something isn’t working. I get facials every three months. And I follow the below routine to a T every night. It’s made me have skin I want to show off rather than hide.

While I share quite a bit of beauty content on wit & whimsy, I’ve never shared my nighttime skincare routine step by step so today I’m detailing out everything I do before my head hits the pillow! Hope you had a good weekend and enjoy the below! xx

Step One: Remove Eye Makeup

I start off this evening process of all processes by removing any eye makeup I’m wearing. I use the Almay pads that do a pretty decent job and are easy to travel with.

Step Two: Cleanse

You may have read before about my obsession with dry cleansing (it was one of my top 10 beauty discoveries of last year.) It’s not for everyone’s skin but mine has radically improved in texture as a result of practicing it. Essentially it means you put your cleanser on your skin when it is dry vs. wet. It’s also why I was so excited to try Burt’s Bees Cleansing Oil as part of my partnership with them this year. This cleanser is applied dry to your skin, rubbed in and instantly your skin starts to feel soft (thanks to both coconut + argan oils.) It removes dirt and makeup, has no oily residue (so don’t fear it if you suffer from oily skin) and it is 100% natural. I’ve been using 1-2 times per week on days where I wear more makeup since it deep cleans. On the other days and in the mornings I use my dermatologist-prescribed face wash on my dry skin with my Clarisonic (I only use my Clarisonic once per day at nighttime however.) Read more about facial cleansing best practices here, if you’re interested.

Step Three: Toner

My facialist turned me onto the importance of toners and they sort of changed my life. After I cleanse, I get every last ounce of makeup off my skin with this Seaweed Toner. I also use a Cucumber toner on my chest because it happens to be prone to those oh-so-fun little red bumps that can come as a result of working out or overheating. Both are really good for sensitive skin. And if my chest is particularly bad I follow the toner with this magic powder that can work wonders over night. I also use these toners every morning. I can’t recommend them enough.

Step Four: Moisturize

My skin has been suffering majorly from dehydration the past month or so and therefore I am at long last subscribing to the ritual of using a nighttime moisturizer. I know everyone tells you to do this but I just never felt the need for my skin before but recently my skin has been craving the hydration. Right now I am testing out two different brands. This one from Clarins (I love their stuff) and this one from Tatcha. So far I love both and see a difference in my skin’s glow in the morning.

Step Five: Topicals

After I apply moisturizer, I use two different prescription topicals. I layer them one over the other religiously every night. If I don’t, I can pretty much expect breakouts on my chin and nose.

Step Six: Eye Cream + Lashes

I use an eye cream every night and while I try out some new ones here and there, I always come back to using the Tata Harper Restorative Eye Cream. I love the smell, the texture and think it works really well. (I love her line overall.) As a last step I apply Latisse to my lashes. (I know some girls that love Neulash which doesn’t require an Rx but I didn’t have any results when I tried that so I went back to Latisse.)

Voila!

It should be noted that in addition to the above, I also use a face mask 1-2 times per week at night. These are my favorites. And with my recent dry skin issues, I’ve also become obsessed with this moisturizing mask I got last month. It works so well and feels magical when you are applying it.

  1. Love reading other people’s skin rituals. I have been playing with mine lately because while my skin isn’t breaking out I want that glowing skin that I’ve seen so many people achieve with the right routine! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Laura! I highly recommend trying dry cleansing to try and achieve that texture to make your skin glow-y! And try the Clarins Instant Light, too! I am obsessed with it for that lit-from-within-kinda glow!

Where do you get your facials in NYC?

I don’t wear makeup a lot so my skincare routine is generally fairly simple. I do need to get better about adding a moisturizer though. Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t use moisturizer for years but now it is really helping the condition of my skin! If you work it back in let me know how it goes!
