One Year in Brooklyn

Last Thursday marked one year of my living in Brooklyn! (Where does time go!?) I remember when I moved to New York over seven years ago people always spoke about the borough of Brooklyn with a certain stereotypical intonation. (Some still do). It took me quite some time to begin to explore Brooklyn and I still feel like I have so much left to discover but over the past twelve months I have loved getting settled in Brooklyn Heights.

The above are some of my favorite snaps from the past year in Brooklyn Heights and neighboring DUMBO and Cobble Hill. As I explored the area I quickly fell in love with this special nook of the borough. What I love about living in Brooklyn Heights is that it feels like this charming secret little hideaway. There’s this feeling of zen that comes over me almost every time I return to it – particularly after days spent in Manhattan. After so many years in New York and many apartments in other neighborhoods (I’ve lived in both the East Village and the Upper East Side), Brooklyn Heights is where I’ve most felt at home. There’s something about it that makes it really, truly feel like a neighborhood. Like the teensiest dose of suburbia in the way people interact and the way it operates. It also helps that I have a lot of friends in the area which makes for lovely run-ins when I’m coming to and from my apartment.

When I realized I had to move again (my previous unit had ongoing leaks in the ceiling, no air conditioning and a landlord/management company that were absolutely abysmal)  all my friends began inquiring whether I’d go back to Manhattan and, truth be told, I did consider it but my gut instinct reminded me how I feel when I’m in Brooklyn Heights…calm + happy. I’m so glad I found another apartment in this gem of a neighborhood and can’t wait to continue frequenting my favorite spots and continuing to explore.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I had the nicest time celebrating two of my friends’ wedding upstate (they also happen to live next door to me, too!) and getting to see a bit of the cool, artsy town of Hudson, NY. I’m now gearing up for what till be a very busy week ahead! Enjoy your Monday!
