The Third Annual Kindness Campaign

wit & whimsy The Third Annual Kindness Campaign

I am beyond thrilled today to announce the 3rd annual wit & whimsy Kindness Campaign designed to Spread Kindness & Joy for the month of December (aka #SpreadKindnessSpreadJoy.) The past two years of this campaign have truly been highlights of the year for me and I cannot wait to see what we all do this year together! In fact, we could all really use some cheering up couldn’t we?

Two years ago this idea was born out of the realization that during this time of year so much of the world (and especially the world of blogging) is focused on commercialism and buying. So I wanted something that would have a different focus and would give back.

The Third Annual Kindness Campaign

What is the wit & whimsy Kindness Campaign?

Between now and the end of the month I’m hoping you will join me in spreading kindness and joy throughout your community through small actions. Below I’ve compiled a bunch of thought-starters to get you thinking. But it can really be any act of kindness and joy. Small! Large! Whatever it is it counts! It can also involve monetary donations or acts or things that cost only time. And I know money can be tight this year more than ever so the Kindness Campaign is not just about donating funds. I did re-imagine my ideas this year however to account for the pandemic and staying safe while we give back.

You can spread so much kindness and joy through your actions, your time and the ways you show up in your community.

My hope is that this continues to grow every year and creates a ripple effect in every community where you – a wit & whimsy reader – resides. And that all of our acts together go far and wide in spreading positivity this holiday season.

I know this is such a busy time of year but I’m hoping we can all carve out a moment or two for an act! Last year I was so filled with joy seeing the comments come in and the tags on social as people did their acts. In fact, my heart grew ten sizes in the month of December last year I am quite sure.

How it Works:

  1. Complete your good deed! Need inspiration? See below!
  2. Come back to this post and share it in the Comments section below. (I will pin this post to the slider on the home page just under the wit & whimsy logo so you can easily find it!) Why share your act? 1. I want to celebrate you and the good you’re spreading! but 2. because I will be once again making charitable donations of $500 to causes important to several randomly selected participants. (This year I’ll be doing 5 at $100 each vs. one $500 like the last two years). More acts = more entries!
  3. Optional: Share your act on Instagram to spread the word and inspire others! And tag me @meghandono + use the hashtag #SpreadKindnessSpreadJoy so I can see what you guys are out there in the world doing. So why tag me? I’ll be sharing some of mine + some of yours on my Stories so we can all be in this together! (*Just be sure to also note your act in the Comments section of this blog post so I can include it as an entry if you’re interested in potentially having your favorite charity get a donation!)

Last Year’s Winner:

The “winner” of the 2019 campaign, Rory G. asked that I give the $500 to a food-related cause that helps families who are in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic more families than ever are in need of food to feed their families. Through the wit & whimsy Kindness Campaign we were able to provide 5,000 meals for families in need this year via the donation to Feeding America.

#SpreadKindnessSpreadJoy

  2. Send handwritten notes to a nursing home to uplift seniors who haven’t been able to receive visitors much of this year.
  3. Babysit a friend or loved one’s children for a few hours if you are able to safely so that they can accomplish something on their to do list.
  4. Give a stranger a compliment.
  5. Send some snail mail to loved ones.
  6. Help a child’s Christmas wish come true via MakeAWish.

A Few Causes to Support

I also wanted to spotlight a few causes that are important to both me and that wit & whimsy readers shared are of importance to them should you care to support any of these this month. (Thank you to those of you who took time to share causes close to your heart!)

So what do you guys say…will you join me in spreading kindness and joy this month?

This community gives so much to me every day and I hope to be able to make an impact on each of your communities by this little movement throughout this month.  And, if you’re up for it, email this post to your friends + family so we can keep the kindness and joy spreading.

I can’t wait to see what we all do together!

You’re so sweet! Today, I’m making charitable donations through my employer giving site so that they can be matched. Double the love this holiday season!

  2. Melissa says:

Yay, so glad this campaign is back and in a year I would think it’s needed more than ever! Today I made a donation to my local food bank and purchased Christmas gifts for the children in my state’s foster care system. I’m also setting a personal goal to continue completing acts of charity or kindness each week this month – sometimes its so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, even in a year when it looks so different.

    • Meghan says:

Thank you so much for your shared enthusiasm, Melissa!! And for these amazing good deeds!! Love the idea of doing gifts for foster children. Thank you for sharing & for inspiring!

  3. Beth says:

I did this before thanksgiving but, my dads student (he’s a phd professor) gifted him a large amount of Amazon gift cards. And after the student refused to take it back I went to some local shelters Amazon wish list and got them as many things as could! I even was able to add my own money so we could also get them a new baby carrier on top of everything else! It made me so happy to be able to give back just that small amount I can’t wait to keep spreading joy

    • Meghan says:

Oh wow I didn’t know shelters had Amazon wish lists – that’s so great to know! Thank you very much for sharing and for this amazing good thing you did!

  4. GF says:

I’ve been rocking #18 tipping generously since the pandemic started this past spring, and am keeping it up especially during the holidays — just yesterday I tipped my hair stylist 40%! (My first haircut since March!) Thanks for such an incredible campaign!

  5. Ginger says:

What a fabulous positive initiative! I love all of your ideas and can’t wait to spread the joy! I’m surprising a senior friend with a small tree tomorrow so she can enjoy some Christmas magic!

  6. Tracy says:

I crowdsourced my Facebook Community for donations for two local Food Banks. Thanks for sharing my story on Instagram this evening. It was a small action I could do.

I look forward to seeing what everyone does this holiday season and spreading more joy and kindness throughout the month! Love this campaign you created!

  7. Carrie Brecht Sweetser says:

Love this!! Just donated to frontline families fund – an awesome fund for families of healthcare workers who died from covid, focusing on bipoc. Love your ideas and will be doing more and reporting back!

  8. Molly says:

I love this campaign so much! Today I donated to Feeding South Florida and Mazon to support their efforts to end food insecurity and ensure folks have food on the table. It’s devastating to see how many millions of people are struggling to feed themselves and their families in the absence of adequate government assistance. Can’t wait to take a longer look at your list to find more ways to give back!

  9. Christina says:

So many wonderful ideas here, I want to try and do them all! But for today I donated stocking stuffers to Mom’s Christmas Stockings. http://momschristmasstocking.com So easy to do- just ordered items online and shipped them to Wendy to stuff into stockings for women and children in NYC shelters. Thanks for inspiring us all, Meghan!

  10. Allison says:

For others who are also doing #10 and finding clothes to donate from their own wardrobe — Dress for Success is an awesome organization where you can donate professional attire that helps women in need show up confidently and professionally to job interviews. For anyone based in the UK, Smart Works is a similar organization!

Thanks for being a great rallier of cheer, Meghan!

  11. Andrea says:

Just bought gifts from my local Salvation Army’s wishlist…now onto looking what to do next. Thanks for all the inspiration!

  12. Lois says:

My next door neighbor is an R.N. at our local hospital. Due to the increase in COVID cases, she is having to work longer hours, and help in areas which are outside her normal scope of duty. I made her a big pot of leek and potato soup, so she has something quick and nourishing to grab for lunch or dinner. I have also offered to help with her four dogs, if she needs someone to let them out for breaks during the day, or to feed them since she can’t be home at her regular time. I am home all day, so it is easy for me to run next door for a few minutes.

  13. Tomissa says:

My family purchased 10 new holiday-themed onesies to send over to the local NICU. Our son was there for six weeks this summer, and we know how difficult it is to see moments of happiness and magic slide by outside of the hospital. Creating a bit of whimsy in the hospital is our hope.

We also made a financial contribution to the hospital as well. It will help keep the NICView monitors going, which is a way for family members to check in on the babies virtually through a webcam!

  14. Tomissa says:

I coordinated a donation between my colleagues and I for our local food pantry. We were able to provide 2700 meals to those who are food insecure in our area!

  15. Carrie Brecht Sweetser says:

Just made my yearly donation to our local toys for tots!

  16. Carrie Brecht Sweetser says:

Also, made Christmas kindness loops with my kids (great idea I got from the busy toddler). Now my kiddos can count down to Christmas while also helping me do kindness acts every day (like making cards for people, donating toys, etc). Spread the joy!

  17. Kate Scott says:

I took a suggestion from you and purchased a few Starbucks gift cards to give to those in need, thanks for the suggestion!
