The Ultimate Self Care Sunday

Meghan Donovan of wit & whimsy shares the ultimate self care Sunday

How was your weekend? Mine was full of travel mishaps and indulgences on a weekend trip to Charleston but the hurdles were worth it. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that my friend Angie had quite the trouble arriving down south from Chicago and then I was wildly delayed getting home so our plans had somewhat of a snafu but the together time – while limited – was so worthwhile!

Anyhow, remember when I talked about Self Care Sunday in this post? I love that this practice has become somewhat of a beauty movement through social media and I personally so enjoy carving out time on Sunday evenings to do some self care. If you follow me on Instagram you may often see me on Sundays sharing some of my beauty routine as part of #selfcaresunday so for today’s post I thought it would be fun to share what my ultimate self care Sunday routine would look like!

Every time I make time to read and I get into a good book I am reminded how much I enjoy doing this instead of constantly giving my attention to the television! On Sundays where I don’t have many plans, I’ve been allowing myself an hour to read in bed in the morning in my PJs and it has been pretty close to bliss. I’ll make myself a little breakfast and coffee and then curl up with a book. I signed up for Book of the Month last month and am so glad I did as I’ve been enjoying reading physical books vs. those just on my iPad. (By the way if you want to try Book of the Month if you sign up through this link we will both get a free book!) My most recent book was this one and I cannot recommend it enough! It was a great page turner and I can’t wait for the movie to come out.

Drink 64oz of water.

Prioritizing drinking water throughout Sunday ensures I set myself up for success to do it throughout the week. As I mentioned in this post, I’ve been feeling far better since getting in the habit of this.

Deep Clean Skin.

I love face masks for Sunday Self Care but before I use one I always love doing a deep cleanse to remove makeup, dirt, oil…you name it! I’ve been using the ageLOC LumiSpa facial cleanser from Nu Skin for the past month which basically cleanses while also, wait for it: providing a facial massage. Seriously though! When I first used it I thought I initially hated the vibrating and then I realized how much I loved the fact that my face felt like it was getting some major TLC. I used to be wed to another facial cleanser but truthfully haven’t used it since I moved to Brooklyn (not sure why) but testing this LumiSpa has made me realize how much cleansing can be improved with the help of a device. The LumiSpa has a silicone head which is actually more hygienic and it works with your cleanser to clean out pores, remove dead skin and make skin brighter + smoother. One other additional skin-loving tactic I like to take on my body during self care Sundays is dry brushing. Do any of you guys do this, too!?

Apply a Face Mask (or two!)

Man, isn’t doing face masks kind of addicting? Truthfully I rarely make time to do one during the week so often on Sundays I’ll double up on two different kinds. If my skin is feeling dry, I reach for a mask with hydrating capabilities, if my pores are feeling clogged I use my favorite clarifying mask and sometimes I just do one for radiance or glow.  I’m overdue for sharing a revised post on my favorite masks so keep an eye out for that!

Cook Dinner.

Doing a Sunday night dinner is my favorite way to round out the weekend. I often pick recipes I’ve never tried before and enjoy winding down on Sunday with some home cooked goodness.

Self Care SundayTea Before Bed.

As you guys probably know by now, in the wintertime I can’t get enough tea. I’ll fire up water in my beloved kettle and then curl up with a cup before I go to sleep (recently it has been accompanied by a viewing of old Will & Grace episodes!). My favorite teas can be found in this post.

The Best Nighttime Lip MaskApply a lip mask.

I’ve started applying a lip mask pretty religiously before bedtime for a bit more oomph when it comes to fixing any chapped skin. It works wonders while I sleep and then I wake up with lips in better shape than I went to bed with.

Make time to Meditate.

This year I wanted to start making morning a meditation a priority and I’ll admit I’ve largely failed. That being said I have been successful at doing a round at bedtime to help me fall asleep. The Inscape app I always talk about has a variety of sessions dedicated to sound and restful sleep and I truly believe I sleep better on the nights I fire it up. I will say I think it’s of utmost importance to do this as part of a self care Sunday routine as it really helps me wind down and avoid the Sunday scaries.

Have any of you ever done any part of a Sunday Self Care ritual!? Would love to hear if you have! And if you start to take up the practice, share it on Instagram & tag me – I’d love to see what you do!

p.s more of my nighttime rituals and how I get glow-y skin.
