What to Wear in Paris in the Fall

August 30, 2023

Meghan Donovan of Paris, Perfected

I absolutely love being in Paris in the Fall. The city quiets down a bit after the summer rush of tourists, you can be pleasantly surprised with late summer weather well into October at times and the city’s trees start to turn colors giving it an even more magical feel. It’s just a lovely time of year to enjoy the City of Lights.

I also love planning outfits when I travel to Paris in the Fall. You can be comfortable and chic if you know what to pack and how to make your clothes work well for you in terms of being able to mix and match. I recommend leaning into neutrals (no matter the season!) as it always makes putting a myriad of outfits together easy.

As the founder of En Route to Rêverie I am in Paris often and can tell you that you should be able to enjoy Fall weather all of September, October and November and sometimes even into early December. Below is a handy guide on what to wear to pack for Paris in the Fall. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to shop current styles of what I recommend, too!

You’ll notice a lot of repeats in the looks below. Tailored blazers, tweed jackets, ankle crop jeans, black pants, timeless shoes like ballet flats, loafers and black booties and versatile sweaters.

What to do in Paris When It Rains I wit & whimsy

The Trench Coat with Black Pants

I never go to Paris without a trench coat. It’s the perfect topper much of the year when you travel to Paris and it always brings together an outfit. Pair it with a black pant, with cropped jeans or over a dress. This style is classic from J.Crew as is this one from Sezane both of which I own.

Wearing above: The MM.LaFleur Jensen Trench which is an older style. This style from Everlane is similar.

Another favorite pair of black pants are the M.M.LaFleur Meija

Black Tweed Blazer with White Tee and Jeans

In my book you can never go wrong with a tee and a blazer and a tried and true styling for me is with high waisted dark jeans (these are my favorites) and a slingback shoe or ballet flat.

Paris Outfit in Fall - Aritzia Trouser

Trousers

I love a high waisted trouser paired with my favorite sneakers. This pair is the Aritzia Effortless pant and I recommend sizing up. This pair by J.Crew are my most wonrn.

Fall Basics Pieces I wit & whimsy

The Plaid Blazer

An oversized blazer in a print is such a versatile piece. I love this one (size 2) and own it in several colors. It fits well over thinner sweaters so it’s great if you are starting the day with a cooler morning but then want to lose a layer as the sun comes out. This one pairs well with a myriad of jeans in my collection.

For slingback shoes similar to those above check out ASOS’ selection.

Paris Fall Outfit - Slip Skirt with Leather Jacket and Sarah Flint Boots

Slip Skirt with Knee High Boots

I love wearing a slip skirt year round but in the Fall I pair it with a boot with a walkable heel. It’s a great look for Paris because it goes seamlessly from day to nighttime if you don’t want to do an outfit change before dinner.

Sezane Fall Collection I wit & whimsy

The Year Round Coat

This coat is a workhorse in my coat closet. I love the tailored fit of it and that you can wear it layered and accessorized in cooler months or with a more feminine blouse in warmer months. I recommend sizing up.

I also love adding a ruffled collar top under coats or sweaters in the Fall. Perfect for a feminine French detail.

Styling Classics I wit & whimsy

Leather Jacket + a Classic Button Down

Two timeless pieces in my wardrobe that I’ve had for years are my Vince and J.McLaughlin leather jackets and a well-fitting button down. These basics when paired with classic blue jeans are great to have on hand for Paris in the Fall.

Madewell has a leather jacket that is similar in style to the one I own seen above as does Sezane.

Paris Fall Outfit Everlane Trench Coat and Scarf with Manolo Blahnik Heeled Mules

Scarf

I always bring a scarf in the Fall for days that may be chillier or windier. It is perfect to top off whatever outwear you bring with you as I did with this trench.

Paris Fall Outfit with Blazer and Shorts

Blazer and Shorts

I generally steer clear of wearing shorts in Paris with the exception of Fall and Winter when I’ll often pair a dressier pair with tights and a boot with a stacked heel. I usually get my shorts like this at Zara

Fall Blazer Outfit featuring Veronica Beard

Ankle Boots

I love an ankle boot in the Fall and will typically pack a pair in a neutral with a good, low heel ideal for walking.

And Other Stories Coat Jenni Kayne Alpaca Sweater Inez Boots Fall Outfit

French Inspired Fall Capsule Wardrobe I wit & whimsy

Cropped Tweed Jacket and Stripes and Straight Leg Jeans

These Levi’s Straight Leg jeans are a great take on an ankle crop jean. Instead of being skinny, they finish with a slightly casual distressed straight hem.

I absolutely love them paired with a slingback heel. They go great with a cropped more fitted jacket and of course a solid or a striped tee is a perfect layer underneath. You’ll find them in a variety of washes and hem styles, too.

Mango is my go-to for tweed jackets. This style is also similar to the above.

MM.LaFleur Jardigan Review I wit & whimsy

Sweater Jacket

A sweater jacket is one of my favorite pieces to carry to throw on top of a tee and look instantly more leveled up. This one is my personal favorite and I own it in two versions!

The fabric is particularly well suited for travel as it doesn’t wrinkle easily. It’s also got a nice weight to it so you can use it as more of jacket on warmer Fall days. It comes in several colors and the neutrals lend themselves well to being a travel wardrobe workhorse.

Above I paired mine with my favorite Sarah Flint Natalie flat.

Sezane Gaspard Sweater I wit & whimsy

Versatile Cardigan

This sweater kind of does it all. Which explains why I now own it in three colors and a striped version! Wear it frontwards or backwards or with jeans, pants or with a skirt or over a dress unbuttoned.

Ann Taylor Casual Blazer I wit & whimsy

Sleek Black Blazer with a Feminine Flat

If you don’t have a black blazer that you feel great in, there’s no time like the present. It’s an instant mood booster and can be restyled throughout the year in loads of ways. I never go to Paris in the Fall without packing a black blazer.

This one is a great affordable option.

Above I paired mine with my favorite Sarah Flint Natalie flat.

Lace Cami I wit & whimsy

Black Blazer + Silk Cami

Take that blazer and make it a nighttime outfit for a night out in Paris by pairing it over a silk cami.

If you prefer no lace – I own and love this tank and this tank, too.

Black Converse in Paris Outfit

Black Jeans + Sneakers

Want to fit in amidst the Parisians? They love their Converse – particularly in black and they add a great sporty, chic edge to any look.

MM.LaFleur Skirt and Top in Paris

Textured Skirt

If you’re blessed with some good midsummer weather in Fall, a textured knit skirt with a lightweight long sleeve top and a pair of flats is a great way to go for an evening out.

What to do in Paris in Autumn I wit & whimsy

Puff Sleeve Sweater and Tweed Skirt

I love balancing a more straight mini skirt with a puff sleeve shoulder. This is a go-to look of mine for more dressy occasions in cooler months. You could also consider a similar look with a tweed dress.

Pair with a beret for an extra French touch and sock booties with a thicker heel for added height without sacrificing comfort.

Breakfast in Paris I wit & whimsy

Plaid Pants with Ballet Flats

Plaid pants are always in my suitcase to wear in Paris in the Fall and Winter. You’ll see them on the streets often and they are a nice break from jeans. Very Audrey Hepburn inspired!

Seen styled above with this sweater.

The Chic Tweed Jacket I wit & whimsy

Chanel Inspired Tweed Jacket

Chanel jackets aren’t in my budget for now so I always snag a lookalike tweed jacket or tweed blazer when I see one for a good price and quality. I love pairing them with cropped black jeans and a ballet flat. This is a timeless and classic outfit for Fall in France!

Chanel Ballet Flats seen above.

Cafe Pigalle Paris Khaite Sneakers J.Crew Trousers Fall Outfit

Monochromatic Outfit with Sneakers

An all black look is a go-to formula for me in Fall and Winter. Here I paired a favorite Sezane sweater (runs big – size down) and my favorite drapey trousers.

Agolde Jeans

Lady Jacket + Jeans + Loafers

I am never without a couple of little black jackets that I like to pair with jeans and a loafer.

La Ligne Striped Sweater Paris outfit

I love bringing a pair of faux leather pants I can dress up or dress down with me. I’ll pair them with boots or a sneaker and a favorite striped sweater.

Layer a cropped cashmere sweater over your favorite oversized button down and pair it with a little texture mini skirt for a 70s inspired Fall look.

Kate Spade Dress in Paris

The Black Dress

A dressed up evening is a must in Paris! For the night you’re heading to a fine dining establishment or fancy rooftop cocktails, a little black dress is in order! And don’t miss seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle while you’re in it for a great photo opp!

Paris Photo Spots I wit & whimsy

Sweater Dress and Over the Knee Boots

Perfect for Fall & Winter, a sweater dress with over the knee boots and a good tailored jacket is a great way to look chic from day to night. I love my Stuart Weitzman Lowland boots for travel because they are so comfortable for logging lots of miles. I’ve had mine for seven years, worn them loads and they still look relatively brand new!

I also love pairing a sweater dress with sleek sneakers:

Floral Dress with Boots

Florals? For Fall? Not so groundbreaking but I always welcome a floral print dress in Fall  – especially with a long sleeve. I love to pair my florals with a sleek knee high boot or ankle booties.

Madewell is usually my go-to for Fall Floral dresses. Styled above with this belt.

Parisian Inspired Outfit I wit & whimsy

Light Colored Tweed Blazer

Consider a lighter color tweed jacket that you can wear Fall and then don it again in Spring.

A-Line Skirt + Sock Booties

Perfect for a night out, I love an a-line mini skirt with sock booties and topped with a feminine blouse or cropped jacket.

French Girl Style Striped Tee I wit & whimsy

Striped Tee and Blazer with Loafers

You can’t go wrong with a striped tee topped with a blazer and paired with a classic loafer. I’d wear a version of this outfit every day if I could. It’s perfect for exploring, a day of meetings, coffee dates, you name it. It’s classic French girl style.

Paris Outfit LaLigne Striped Sweater

Striped Sweater

I also rely on striped sweaters for chillier Fall days in Paris. My favorites are by the brand La Ligne.

This is a great one I own, too.

Paris Blazer Outfit

Blazer with Straightleg Jeans and Sock Boots

This is a Fall in Paris and in NYC uniform for me. I top a favorite blazer with a bodysuit and a straightleg cropped jean paired with a sleek sock boot.

Stylish Neutrals

I always recommend packing for Paris in a color palette and for that means a variety of mix & match neutrals. I’m wearing a wool J.Crew blazer above with a Chanel broach and a square toe ballet flat.

I noticed you had on skinny jeans in some of these outfits
I thought they were “out” and straight, flare, wide leg was in. I had read elsewhere that you would not see skinny jeans in France now. Thoughts?
BTW I loved all of your outfits. You really have a flare!
