WIT & Whimsy talks summer trends with Shop.com

June 24, 2010

Recently we took the time to talk all things shopping and “essentially summer” with Simona Supekar, Fashion Editor for SHOP.COM and loved her fresh perspective and positive outlook on the summer trends this season. Check out our Q&A with her below!

What do you foresee as being the biggest trends this summer?

As far as summer trends go, I am always a sucker for the romper trend. There’s something playful, childlike, yet totally feminine about them. Not to mention they look good on people who are short (like me) and are comfortable too.

Speaking of being vertically challenged, I love what’s going on with caged sandals and wedges these days too. They’re not your same ol’, same ol’ in black anymore – check out Naughty Monkey’s Liggy Sandal or Fergie’s Zaila shoe . These styles make you feel fabulous, elongate your legs and show just the right amount of skin to be a bit seductive…perfect for heating up your summer! And let’s not forget about florals – summer is not summer without something flowery in your repertoire. But this year I’m looking for florals in unusual places – trade in the floral dress for a floral headband for instance, like one from Juicy Couture or J. Crew.

What are your personal go-to favorite brands for summer essentials that SHOP.com carries?

For summer essentials, I love going to SHOP.COM to compare styles and prices on cute dresses. As far as brands go, I love the youthful look of anything from Quiksilver – I live in Los Angeles so it’s perfect for a lazy day at the beach and some chill-axing on the boardwalk. I also love the playful style of anything from the new Liberty of London for Target line paired with some colorful and affordable Colin Stuart wedges for the weekend. As far as beauty products go, I love anything from Too-faced, MAC, or Zoya’s fabulous nail polish colors (try the new Sparkle line!)

WIT & Whimsy covered summer essentials a few weeks back here:  What piece(s) do you agree are not to be missed for fashionable gals this season?

I definitely think your picks of the BCBGeneration romper, the classic aviators, and the cool turquoise bracelet are must-have trends for the summer. I love everything aqua or teal-colored and think everyone should borrow something blue for their summer wardrobe this year. Jo Malone’s fresh fragrances are perfect for getting in the summery spirit too – you can’t miss with anything lime! I love the watercolor print dress from H&M. It’s bold and uplifting, but only a few people can really pull watercolor prints off well without seeming washed out by the colors. My advice: go bold with your makeup too.

What’s the favorite item you’ve snagged this summer from SHOP.com?

Actually some of my favorite summer purchases on SHOP.COM have been totally functional basics. I stocked up on some great beauty products to protect against the harsh LA sun, like bareMinerals Mineral Veil with SPF 25, the limited edition MAC “To the Beach” crème bronzer, and a Smashbox Emulsion Lip Exfoliator to get lips summer-ready. But my favorite purchase is my nifty Keen Targhee II hiking boots, which is great for my summer evening hikes and my recent trip to Costa Rica.

What’s your favorite part about being SHOP.com’s Fashion Editor?

Being SHOP.COM’s Fashion Editor is a real treat because I get to spend a good part of my day catching up on trends by reading magazines, blogs, and trolling our site for the best fashion deals. Who can beat that? I also love attending great shopping events like the Shecky’s Girl’s Night out event or other boutique events to report on the hottest fashions for our blog, The Shopping Vine. I also love interacting with our customers via our Facebook and Twitter pages too – I love seeing what they’re buying and what things they’re passionate about.

What’s the best advice you can give for girls trying to stay on a budget this season, but still spruce up their summertime wardrobes?

My advice for staying on budget is this: Shop for basics like jeans, skirts, tanks, graphic tees, and dresses at thrift stores for great, unique bargains. Then go online and compare prices on the fun extras like accessories – bracelets, scarves, sunglasses, headbands, and other goodies. High quality accessories can kick any outfit up several notches and don’t have to be expensive, either. And definitely shop online for shoes. You will always get the best deal online and if there’s a hot shoe you want, I guarantee there’ll be four or five stores vying to get your business by putting the pair you want on sale. SHOP.COM has price notifications for every product, so you can sign up for an alert when anything you want drops to your desired price.
