I didn’t pay attention to my eyebrows until my mid-twenties. The first time I even gave thought to them (aside from the sporadic tweezing) was before a trip to Las Vegas with my girlfriends when practically everyone was getting their brows waxed in preparation. I joined in and got mine waxed and cursed myself the whole time for the pain (as someone with very pale skin the redness after was no joke!)
But despite the pain, I got a little hooked once I saw the after effect. But after being put on acne topicals (with which you cannot have your face waxed!) and once moving to New York, I began to get my brows threaded. Eyebrow threading = game changer. Honestly, if you’ve never tried it, trust. What I began to suddenly realize was that, when you start to pay attention to your eyebrows, you can actually open up your whole face. Your lashes can take center stage, your eye makeup can look more impressive and the days you don’t wear makeup…you can look more put together.
I got to thinking about all of this as this past weekend a friend texted me saying “what can you recommend for a girl who wants to love their eyebrows?” so it got me to thinking how a lot of people don’t give their eyebrows TLC aside from the usual tweezing. Or they just don’t know where to start. (I didn’t until a few years ago!)
If you’ve ever had a bad experience with waxing, I can’t recommend threading enough. And if you use any topicals like I do, it’s the perfect alternative. I personally swear by the threading at Benefit Cosmetics (it was where I first experienced threading and the process was so easy I vowed never to go elsewhere.) You can go to any of their studios or one of their counters at major department stores. I love it for a few reasons: A) it’s not nearly as painful as you would think. B) they’ll touch you up after, covering your redness and making sure you look normal before you step away and C) they use hot pink thread so…you know, win/win/win all around. I’ve gotten several of my friends hooked on it ever since I became mildly obsessed.
So in addition to my threading vow, I have a few recommendations as it relates to everyday eyebrow maintenance. They include:
- Benefit’s Gimme Brow: This fiber gel fills in your brows and ensure strays stay put. It is SO easy to use. If I forget to use it, I’ll notice halfway through the day and curse myself. That’s how big of a difference it can make.
- Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil: For a project last year with Laura Mercier last year, I had one of their makeup artists show me some techniques with their products and he used their eyebrow pencil on me and I was quite amazed. He drew in places that I’ve never paid attention to and frankly, I’ve never loved a mini makeover more (see it here!) (Of note, this was one of the recos I sent to my friend and she texted me yesterday saying she had bought it and “LOVED” it!)
- Tweezerman Tweezers: Because I only get my brows threaded every three months or so, I tweeze in between every other week. The Tweezerman ones are the best I have found. I keep one in my purse and one in my bathroom.
