black + burgundy

In my late 20s I’ve realized the value of dressing for your body. Frankly, it was a lesson I never had to learn earlier than that because I was a size zero with a metabolism gifted by the Greek Gods…or something like that. I could go into any store and buy whatever I wanted and know it was going to look ok on my body. But guess what? Then thyroid disease struck, my metabolism because obsolete and the temptations of New York landed smack dab on my hips, chest, stomach and thighs. HELLO, LATE 20s…here I am!

But there’s something powerful in recognizing how to shop for your body type. You stop trying to chase trends (I will NEVER be able to pull off crop tops) and you seek out classic styles that you’ll feel good in. One of those styles for me is the fit and flare skirt. I’ve amassed quite the collection in recent years (recently styled a J.Crew one here and one last winter here.) I find this style helps to elongate my legs and makes me feel more comfortable than tighter mini skirt styles.

And isn’t it amazing when you finally recognize that dressing for your body type means you’ll have your purchases in your closet a lot longer? You stop recycling trendy clothing every year because you finally came around to realizing it wasn’t worth your money in the first place.

In other news, in case you missed it, the new spring arrivals at Gap and the LOFT are killing it. These jeans look like a more expensive version from Rag & Bone but are so affordable, this sweater coat is perfectly oversized and this windowpane silk tank is stunning and would look so good with these boyfriend jeans and these heels. Affordable pieces that are actually worth the $$$.

For this ensemble, I threw this $7 Faux Fur collar on over my coat to make a different look to a jacket I wear all the time. It’s a perfect way to upgrade an existing jacket.
