the beauty edit: a custom lip color

BiteBeautyLipLab

While my girlfriends were in town this weekend I was seeking out any indoor activities given the freezing temperatures outside (all 4 gals were in from California.) A friend had recommended Bite Beauty Lip Lab to me which I had heard of but never done. And let me tell you, it was such fun.

Located in Soho, you can make an appointment (highly recommended) and upon arriving, you’ll sit down with a trained artist who will begin by giving you a whipped cherry fruit scrub for your lips, followed by a hydrating agave lip mask. Then the artist will begin working with you to ask you preferences – what color are you looking for and then you’ll choose your lip color’s finish (matte, creme, sheer or deluxe). Next up is the fragrance which involves options including mint, cherry, vanilla, mango, lime, blueberry, violet or mango. You can even mix up two if you want.

Once you’ve decided on your color, the Lip Lab technicians mix it, flash freeze it and then put it into a tube design of your choosing. The whole process takes about 30-45 minutes from start to finish and has a somewhat addictive quality because I found myself wanting to mix up several more shades!

My new shade? Totally customized for me it is 1/2 nude, 1/4 chestnut and 1/4 rose. It’s the perfect shade for every day wear and can be used as a great base to mix it up with brighter colors for nights out. The finish I chose was $36 so the whole experience I find to be very affordable given you can easily spend the same amount on any given lipstick in Sephora or your favorite department store.

Fun fact? Bite’s lip products are handcrafted one at a time to provide nourishing, restorative  benefits. Their lipsticks contain natural and organic ingredients—moisturizers and protective antioxidants like resveratrol, organic fruit butters, and Manuka honey. So they feel good while they look good.

Tip: The lights are actually not the best in the store (florescent overheads) so I recommend as you try shades that you walk outside with a mirror. All 5 of us realized our colors seemed different once formulated and worn later that night than when we donned them within the shop.

If you’re coming to New York City, I thought this was such a fun experience and all of us had such a great time trying various lip colors and then wearing the ones we chose all weekend long!

P.S. I’ve heard great things about Bite’s other products – you can shop them HERE.
