Bedroom Makeover

Last year had a lot of change in store when it came to my apartment. I had one roommate move out, a new one come in her place and we used the opportunity to redesign our living room first and then for the last several months my bedroom has been a work in progress as I curated a new look for it.

I actually had the same bedroom furniture (see it here) since I graduated from college a decade ago and while it served me very well, I was long overdue to update the space with pieces that reflected my change in style and aesthetics. As with most New York living, the space constraints provide plenty of challenges to overcome when tackling an interior project, but I’m so excited to share with you today the makeover and can’t wait to hear what you think!

I will admit that interior design is not my speciality. I know what I like but I have a hard time visualizing how everything will come together (and whether it will look cohesive!) I have such admiration for my friends Caroline and Julia who have a total eye for beautiful interior aesthetics. Therefore when I went to tackle this project, I started with a strategy of looking at the room holistically. I did so by beginning to visualize what I wanted by designing an Idea Board on Joss & Main.

I began saving things I liked to my Bedroom Redesign board and then whittled down my selection as I took measurements in my room and fine-tuned what look and feel I was trying to achieve. It made the whole process far less intimidating!

My #1 priority was to find unique furniture pieces that were as functional as they were stylish and found real winners with this dresser that holds so much and this nightstand that had a large surface area (and therefore a large drawer for storage) and modern design. From there, I began to pick out accessories that would bring the room character and added elements of dimension like this lamp and a Moroccan pouf (been wanting one of these for years and I LOVE the quality of this one)!

I wanted the room to exude a calm, warm and chic feel to it and be somewhere I loved spending time. I chose pieces largely in neutrals but was drawn to several mirrored pieces and also items with metallic details that paired well against the paint on the walls and the exposed brick.

My biggest challenge for this room was finding additional storage for the nook in my room that also houses the clothing rack. The space is really narrow so most dressers were too deep and I hunted for months to find something. It was when I thought outside of the box that I finally spotted these mirrored chests from Raymour & Flanigan and realized that putting two side by side would be the perfect solution to storing my accessories! I keep smaller bags, clutches, additional jewelry, hair accessories and sunglasses in them and love that everything has a proper home now.

While this project was certainly a labor of love over the course of the past five months, I truly could not be happier with how it turned out! Joss & Main is full of interior inspo, too so if you’re planning any home projects this year, I definitely recommend checking out their curated content.

Hope you guys love it as much as I do! I’m so, so happy with it how it turned out.
