Holiday Touches at Home I Meghan Donovan of wit & whimsy

Even though I’m only in New York for two weeks for the month of December that didn’t stop me from adding some decorative holiday touches to my apartment this year.

I don’t have much storage so my Christmas decorations are minimalistic at best but it always feels nice to add some touches.

I love getting a Christmas tree every year and have started to add it to my ornament collection the past few years. (My childhood ornaments remain at my parents’ house given I don’t have much storage.) This week I’m having friends over for a little holiday white elephant gathering and am so glad we’ll all be able to enjoy the tree.

Funny story…the tree fell over approximately 90 minutes after I finished decorating it. I watched from my couch as it happened in slow motion and was so traumatized! I lost a few ornaments (my beloved New York taxi cab now looks like it got in a fender bender lol) and spent forty five minutes cleaning up glass from my floor. Oy! Note to self for next year: Be more careful when you put the tree in the stand and ensure it’s in there properly! Safe to say my tree is now more nestled up against the wall.

Love the look of your minimalistic decor. It still makes it feel like holidays without it looking like Buddy the Elf made a surprise visit when you were gone (usually what my apartment ends up looking like ahah)! And, I’m glad you saved the tree!! That has definitely happened to me….but we were in Florida, and the tree tumbled into the pool!

I’ve also had a tree fall over before, but I caught it and was holding it until someone could fix the stand! Thankfully it was a fake one so not as pointy, haha. I love your decor! Minimal is not bad. We live in a small condo and I think our Christmas-y touches are just right!

I am in love with your gray carpet. Can I know where it’s from?

Our tree almost fell over as I was decorating it this year! For some reason it’s a big tree with a narrow trunk, so it required much maneuvering to stabilize it in the stand. Thankfully, it only leaned significantly and didn’t fall down. It even held up when one of the dogs knocked over the side table into it! Your apartment looks lovely! Even when it was just me and a cat living alone, I always got a tree and decorated for Xmas – it just makes everything feel more festive!

Can you share more about where/why you moved? It seemed like one second you were saying how much you loved your apartment and sharing a tour, and the next you announced you were moving?! Just curious 🙂

There ended up being a lot of reasons but I had a very crooked landlord who had a lot of shady practices and I didn’t feel comfortable in the space. (I once caught them on my Nest cam in my apartment without permission while I was traveling!!) Also the unit was unable to accommodate air conditioning and had two perpetual leaks in the ceiling they refused to fix properly. It was a mess and got worse with every month I lived there! I’m still in the same neighborhood now but a much better apartment 🙂

      • Maggie says:

That’s awful! Makes me think I need a Nest cam just for that reason…Glad you found a better space!!

Can’t recommend it enough! Having it on camera helped me get my security deposit back in full when they tried to withhold a portion of it after I moved out without cause!

So sorry about the tree fall, Meghan!!!
Have a wonderful Christmas in Colorado!
And I had to tell you how gorgeous that last picture is of you in front of the tree!

  7. Dawn says:

Beautifully done! Question: do you have to rearrange your furniture to make room for the tree? And… what did you end up with @ your white elephant party? If you took pics, please have a post about it – I would LOVE to read all about it!

    • Meghan says:

Not really! I just moved my cabinet over a stitch. I’m afraid I didn’t take any photos – I never really document friend occasions like that as I stay off my phone when I’m present with my friends but we had such a fun time!!!

I think you and I use the same “fireplace” on our TVs — really does help to make my apartment feel more festive and create a cozy atmosphere!

  9. GF says:

haha yes, that’s the one!! 🙂
