If you’re like me, you are already thinking ahead to transitional dressing as we head towards fall…summer is truly flying by isn’t it!? With New York’s recent heat waves I will admit that I am personally already craving fall temperatures.
Today’s post is all about maximizing your wardrobe to take advantage of both the current season and the upcoming one. I’m thrilled to once again be teaming up with J.McLaughlin to showcase some pieces from their latest collection to highlight items that can be worn both now, worn come fall and styled multiple ways.
Wear Now // Wear Later
I love a summer sweater that’s the right weight to be worn on cooler summer evenings but also easily transitions to fall. The Annette Sweater is that perfect transitional piece. It’s thin enough for summer wear but also ideal for layering. I adore this cozy piece so much and will no doubt be wearing it year round! I first paired the Annette Sweater with the Petal Shorts that feature the sweetest scalloped edges and topped the look off with these cork sandals that I wore every single day on Nantucket earlier this month. I finished the look with the Rhodes Wicker Clutch that received many a compliment while on island. Here are the sunglasses I’m wearing, too by the way!
Then, for a more Fall-ready look, I styled the sweater with the Madelyn Pants alongside classic and practical accessories including these gorgeous Domina Leather Mules (they’re the most classic cognac color and so comfortable) and the Annie Leather Tote that’s going to be a go-to work bag for me year round.
Wear to Work & Wear to Weekend
The next piece I’m highlighting is the Baxter Jean which features such a fun print. For a summer weekend spent out and exploring, I paired them with the Annette Sweater and my favorite wicker crossbody bag (last seen here). Also, for casual outings, these jeans would look so cute styled with a t-shirt and denim jacket.
For a work-ready look, I paired the Baxter Jean this time with the crisp white button down Alcott Shirt alongside the Domina Leather Mules and the Annie Leather Tote. I absolutely love how this look came together and think it is a great outfit for work in the Fall. Do you agree? I think a crewneck cashmere sweater over the button down would also look so chic for work alongside a neutral pump, too. They’re such a fun and versatile pant to style.
A few other J.McLaughlin pieces I think could transition well include this sweater (that scallop sleeve detail!!), this tie-front blouse, this beautiful soft yet lightweight cashmere sweater and these on-trend pants.
And my favorite topper for the looks? The dreamy Dara Cashmere Cardigan. I love the fit and feel of this gorgeous sweater.
I am all about pieces that work a myriad of ways. It’s why I am always talking about investing in pieces that make you excited to get dressed vs. buying a lot of fast fashion that you’ll have in your giveaway pile in a year or two. All these pieces seamlessly work with other options in my wardrobe that I wear regularly so I’m already scheming up additional looks to wear in the weeks to come.
. . .

So hard to choose, but my favorite is the first outfit. I absolutely love the long sleeve sweater with the white shorts. Looks so crisp and clean, and plus I’m always chilly so I love something on my arms. But, a close second is the look with the crisp white shirt and black and white pants. You look so chic in all of these!
@armcswain
I feel the same way about having sleeves on when wearing shorts! Thank you so much for the sweet comment, Angie!!
What a great post! It is hard to choose, but I think my favorite outfit is your second look with the Madelyn pants, leather mules and gorgeous tote! With the shade and cardigan on top it looks like the perfect transitional work outfit for those post summer/pre fall temps! I absolutely adore that Annie leather tote!
So fun to hear your favorites, Christine – thank you for sharing!! The Annie tote is indeed so chic yet so practical!

I think the white jean + sweater fall look is my favorite! Its a great way to transition white jeans after Labor Day and so so cute!
@KateScott10
White jeans year round are my jam!!
While all of these are great I love the sweater/shorts combo with the purse! Why?! I have no clue why but I love wearing shorts and a sweater and the bag is one of my favorites from J McLaughlin purses, I’ve been lusting over it for two summers now! Insta handle is: @klindyq
Thank you!
It really is SUCH a good bag. Their wicker bags are my favorite for summer!
I am prettyyyyyy sure my favorite is the outfit with the shorts. Literally everything. The scallops, the soft sweater (maybe layered), the detail on the cork sandals is so beautifully edited, and that bag. I have been lusting after that bag and this outfit really lets it shine, but is also so simple. I am so obsessed!
Or do I like those jeans better?! Are really making us decide?!
PS – I have to say I recently discovered you through Carly and did not know you were a blogger, as well. Everything about your aesthetic is so perfect. It is a bit preppy, quite Americana, but has such an effortless chicness about it, with various pops of trends that are more lasting than actually trendy. I really have to say you are my new blogger crush and I am so glad I found your site! Also can’t wait to use your new Paris, Perfected service!
I guess I will put this too.. @gidelolivia
Gidel, oh my gosh this comment – thank you for it!! Put such a smile on my face. I am so glad you found my site & like my style – thank you for all the kind words! Isn’t that wicker clutch truly so amazing!?
I am OBSESSING over the Fall look. It’s so timeless, yet modern enough to stay up-to-date. Love love love the sweater! I’m such a sucker for camel colors, especially in the fall! @ashintrone ???
Feel the same way about camel/nude tones for Fall! The Dara cardigan truly is a dream!
I LOVE the cardigan and live in the them as soon as it gets cool enough?
My favorite look is the last one with the brown mules and the leather tote ? I love that it’s such a classic look, which I’m obsessed with! Seems like you can wear that outfit to any type of event and it would look amazing ?

I am a big fan of J.McLaughlin pieces. I adore how you style your outfits. I love how it can be worn both ways, now and in the fall. Now that fall is coming these pieces can fit any outfit. The outfit I like the most is the last photo. It’s with the Domina mules, Baxter Jean, Alcott shirt, and Annie leather tote. It gives me a Grace Kelly vibe, which is very classy.
Also thanks for the giveaway!

They’d be such practical, chic pieces for the work day for sure!!
LOVE the sweater and white shorts. I live in the south, so it’s still to warm for that but it’s a perfect early autumn outfit when you want those autumn vibes but don’t want heatstroke.
@Dawn_N_W
Truly such a good transitional outfit for when summer in your state lasts a little longer! So glad you liked it!
I love the last look – the cute jeans and white button up. So classic, and I LOVE those mules!! @llemanie

Thank you friend!!
Hi Meghan! I love your whole look on the big wooden bench in the garden! Always dig a good button detail at the wrist, and I can’t get over this wicker and leather combo on the crossbody! I need to stop carrying my neutral, everyday crossbody to events, and this looks like such a perfect solution to go with everything and add a breezy flair! Plus your waves are perfect in this shot! My hair is about your same length and I can never accomplish those waves! XO, @meganbarrywhalen
Aw thank you, Megan!! I swear by the Sultra 1in wand for these waves + some good product to keep it intact lol! So glad you liked the post!
