What to Pack for the Cotswolds

October 22, 2025

There’s something undeniably magical about the English countryside — especially the Cotswolds! With its storybook villages, cozy pubs you could spend hours in, and sweeping fields dotted with sheep, it’s one of those destinations where time seems to slow down. As the founder of En Route to Rêverie, I’ve spent a good deal of time exploring the English countryside. I love channeling a slightly more relaxed, English countryside fashion aesthetic when I’m in the Cotswolds.

I always get asked what to wear in the Cotswolds and what to pack for a Cotswolds trip (England’s weather is notoriously fickle, after all), so I’m excited to share a seasonal style guide covering Cotswolds travel style and packing tips so you feel stylish and prepared.

I’ve also highlighted some of my favorite British brands and retailers including Me+Em, Boden, Strathberry, COS, Belstaff, and Align as well as European retailers like Sézane and & Other Stories

For more packing guidance, don’t miss What to Pack for London and my Cozy Weekend Getaway Packing List. Both are helpful if you’re building a Cotswolds packing list or planning an extended countryside stay.

What to Wear in the Cotswolds

Packing for the Cotswolds is all about classic wardrobe staples and timeless, versatile pieces that can handle the region’s famously unpredictable weather. Think layering for unpredictable weather, waterproof shoes for country walks, and soft knits for chilly evenings. It’s all about finding that elevated countryside chic style by packing items that are relaxed yet refined.

One item I always ensure makes my Cotswolds packing list (regardless of the season) is a good packable umbrella. I can’t count how many times the forecast has promised clear skies only to be met with rain. In England especially, I find it’s always best to be prepared for a spot of rain.

What to Pack for the Cotswolds in Spring

Spring brings fresh blooms and green rolling hills in the English countryside, along with its fair share of drizzle. You can expect temperatures between 50–65°F, so I suggest packing accordingly.

Barn Jacket, Chore Jacket, or Quilted Jacket

Another must-pack layer that feels right at home in the English countryside is a barn jacket, chore jacket, or quilted jacket! I suggest picking something in a neutral color (like khaki or navy) so you can get the most possible wear out of it. Bonus if it’s waterproof!

Barbour is one of my favorite brands for quilted jackets that are somehow both timeless and on-trend. Alex Mill also has a lovely selection, and this barn jacket from Align is also gorgeous.

Trench Coat

For the Spring and Fall I always ensure I pack a trench coat when I travel to the Cotswolds. It’s the perfect outfit topper, plus you never quite know what weather you’ll be dealt. This style is a classic from J.Crew as is this one from Sézane, both of which I own and have loved for years.

A trench is one of those classic wardrobe staples that truly defines English countryside fashion — stylish, functional and forever timeless.

White Button Down

A crisp white button down is one of those wardrobe staples that works no matter the season. I love pairing mine under sweaters or tucked into trousers for a polished yet effortless look. My favorites are from Sézane and Jenni Kayne!

Wide Leg Trousers

When I want to feel a bit more refined while still being comfortable, I pack a pair of wide leg trousers. They strike that perfect balance between relaxed and elegant — ideal for exploring charming English villages or heading to a cozy dinner. Look for lightweight linen or cotton styles in Summer, and wool or twill versions for Fall and Winter.

This pair of herringbone trousers are a chic option for chillier seasons.

Sneakers

Comfortable footwear is key for the Cotswolds, and a classic pair of sneakers is a staple I never travel without. They’re perfect for wandering cobblestone streets, and work with jeans, trousers, and dresses.

What to Pack for the Cotswolds in Summer

Everything really comes back to life in the Summer! The days are mild and pleasant (mid-60s to low-70s°F), with long golden evenings perfect for dinner al fresco or country picnics. There’s nothing like an English Summer! This is one of my favorite seasons to visit the Cotswolds, and the easiest time to lean into neutral color palette outfits that work day to night.

Linen Dresses

While it’s rarely sweltering in the UK (although remember, many places don’t have AC!), I still find myself reaching for a linen dress or two when I pack for the Cotswolds in the Summer.

Linen is breezy and lightweight, and while it does wrinkle I always keep a mini bottle of this wrinkle spray on me. Style with sneakers or minimalist sandals depending on the day’s activities.

Ballet Flats

For days spent meandering through market towns or popping into local cafés, I always pack a pair of classic ballet flats. They’re chic, comfortable, and take up hardly any room in your suitcase. A neutral pair in beige, navy, or black will complement everything you pack.

I love my pairs from Margaux and Sarah Flint — both timeless, feminine and easy to walk in all day.

Minimalist Sandals

Opt for simple leather styles with clean lines that feel effortlessly elegant. They pair beautifully with linen dresses, tailored shorts, or even a relaxed trouser for evenings outdoors.

Tailored Shorts

When the weather warms up, I love swapping my jeans and trousers for a pair of tailored shorts. They keep things refined while still feeling relaxed. Look for linen or cotton-blend fabrics in neutral shades that pair easily with everything else you’ve packed.

Woven Bag

A woven or straw bag is the quintessential summer accessory — practical for daytime exploring and polished enough for dinner alfresco. I always bring one along when I’m in the Cotswolds in Summer to add a touch of texture to my looks.

Swimsuit

While the Cotswolds isn’t exactly a beach destination, many hotels and country estates have pools or spa facilities that are worth taking advantage of! This style is a forever favorite.

Straw Hat

A woven hat instantly adds a bit of chic to any summer outfit, and protects you from the sun during long countryside strolls or lunch poolside.

This is my secret to traveling with a hat!

What to Pack for the Cotswolds in Fall

Escape to the English countryside in Autumn — it’s the perfect season for Cotswolds fall outfits and layering cozy classic wardrobe staples. Soak in crisp mornings, colorful fall foliage, and cozy pub fires. You can expect highs in the 50s and 60s°F with some rainy days.

Waxed Jacket

A waxed jacket is a great example of English countryside fashion done right — equal parts function and flair.

I recommend perusing Barbour’s classic collection of waxed jackets, as well as Belstaff!

What to Pack for The Cotswolds

Tweed Jacket

A cropped tweed jacket is the perfect versatile layer for Fall in the English countryside. I love pairing mine with straight leg jeans, or wearing it over a dress for a polished look.

I also suggest packing jackets and blazers in heritage-inspired fabrics, like herringbone or plaid for that quintessential Cotswolds feel. Mango has one of my favorite selections of budget friendly tweed!

Striped Sweater

A striped sweater is one of effortless pieces I always reach for when the weather cools. A striped knit with jeans is my go-to Cotswolds fall outfit combination.

Baseball Cap

For a modern twist on countryside style, I love packing a classic baseball cap. It’s perfect for windy walks, bad hair days, or simply adding a casual touch to a polished outfit. This one is also perfect!

Straight Leg Jeans

A reliable pair of straight leg jeans is a must for Cotswolds travel style year-round, but especially in the Fall.

When it comes to jeans, a straight leg silhouette is typically my go-to. They look effortless with a striped knit and trench, or sleek with a blazer and boots.

I gravitate toward mid- or high-rise styles in a medium or dark wash that pair with everything. My most-worn pairs are from AGOLDE — the fit and quality make them worth every penny.

Plaid Blazer

Is there anything more British than a tailored plaid or checkered blazer? I like to layer mine over a cashmere tee for extra warmth and pair with jeans and tall riding boots for a look that’s equal parts stylish and practical for Fall in the countryside.

I’m partial to M.M.LaFleur’s O’Hara blazer, but this is a budget friendly alternative.

These Sarah Flint Perfect Riding Boot are so classic, so comfortable and feel like they get better with wear. They are perfect for exploring the English countryside in the Fall.

Suede Tote Bag

A classic suede tote is a real workhorse for travel and toting around on a day of excursions! Strathberry is a UK heritage brand that makes gorgeous bags, you may recognize them as one of Kate Middleton’s preferred bag brands!

What to Pack for the Cotswolds in Winter

The coziest time of year to visit the Cotswolds is Winter, especially around Christmas. Expect cold, damp conditions (with highs in the 40s°F), short days, and long cozy evenings. You’ll want to prioritize packing versatile layers that still feel elegant!

Wool Coat

A beautiful wool coat is the hero piece of English countryside fashion in the colder months. Whether you’re heading out for a countryside stroll or visiting an outdoor Christmas market, a classic camel or navy coat instantly elevates any outfit.

I’ve long relied on this voluminous wrap coat, and recently splurged on this cashmere coat which is stunning in person. (Be sure to size down – I’m wearing the XS above!)

Cozy Scarf

A plaid or tartan scarf feels right at home in the English countryside, especially during the festive season!

If neutrals are more your style, this cashmere wrap doubles as a scarf and a travel wrap on the airplane.

Plaid Midi Skirt

When I want something feminine yet winter-appropriate, I reach for a plaid midi skirt. It’s a chic alternative to jeans and pairs beautifully with tall boots and a cashmere sweater. I especially love this look for lunches at cozy inns or afternoon tea. Opt for wool or tweed fabrics that hold their shape and keep you warm.

This corduroy A-line skirt would also perfectly match the Cotswolds vibe.

Gloves and Hat

The finishing touches that make all the difference on a chilly day in the countryside! A cashmere beanie is a must-pack, and cashmere lined leather gloves are chic yet practical.

Tall Boots

Tall boots are a winter essential for both warmth and style. They’re perfect for countryside strolls, day trips, and even dressier dinners when styled with a skirt or sweater dress.

I look for leather boots with a low heel and solid tread for practicality. I also sometimes opt to pack a low heel version.

For soggy weather you’ll want to have some tall rain boots. I like those from Hunter.

Fun fact: some English countryside properties will offer their guests a selection of wellies (rainboots) to sport while on the grounds so I often rely on that instead of packing them myself.

Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere sweaters are among my most-loved classic wardrobe staples because they are timeless, versatile, and perfect for layering for unpredictable weather.

I gravitate toward neutral shades like cream, black, and charcoal that pair effortlessly with everything else in my suitcase. I really like Me + Em’s collection of knitwear and sweaters as well.

Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is one of my favorite ways to stay warm while still feeling put together in the Winter. It’s an easy, one-and-done outfit that transitions beautifully from daytime exploring to a fireside pub dinner. A sweater dress and tall boots combo is an effortlessly chic Cotswolds winter outfit that always feels polished.

Turtleneck Sweater

Few pieces are more quintessentially Winter than a great turtleneck sweater. It’s the ideal layering piece for cold days in the Cotswolds — sleek under a blazer or perfectly cozy with jeans and boots. I always pack at least one in cashmere or merino wool.

Wool Cardigan

You can’t go wrong with packing a classic, wool cardigan. I like to stick with neutral colors and chunky knits to be extra cozy.

Whether you’re planning a cozy Winter weekend or a Spring escape, packing for the Cotswolds is all about timeless pieces that blend comfort and style! By focusing on a few classic wardrobe staples, you’ll have everything you need to look chic, stay warm and embrace that signature English countryside vibe.
