Just call me Betty

Today I finally learned what the weather forecast means when it calls for “wintry mix.” And let me just say, it’s gross. I endured rain, hail and snow all in a 14 hour period. And once home, in the comfort of my favorite sweats and coziest tee, I decided it was the perfect night to do some baking and warm up the ol’ little apartment.

I turned to a recipe featured by Emily I had starred long ago and whipped them up and let me tell you…oh.my.god.deliciousness. These little treats are the perfect indulgence. With the richness of chocolate and the consistency of a brownie, these Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies are supremely easy to make, but so utterly sinful in the most indulgent of ways. Be sure to pour a big glass of milk to accompany these little guys, you’ll need it! After a not so stellar day, these cookies (along with tasting help and mmm’s from the roomies), were the perfect pick me up.

p.s. – I also sprinkled some sea salt on a few of them as a trial, as inspired by this recipe via Whipped. SO good!

Yum!

After being inspired by this New York Times article, my brother proposed we do a take on the idea during the long weekend post-Thanksgiving…and boy did we! Everyone in my family (and my good friend Megan, in town visiting moi (more photos to come)) cooked a dish (or two!) and we had an amazing, delicious feast that involved a whole day of cooking, crafting, baking and then indulging.

Warm Brie & Spinach Salad (using this recipe, sans chicken)

Carrot & Ginger soup: the perfect Fall color and made by my sister

The most amazing Eggplant Parmesan EVER. Courtesy of Megan’s fav food blog, Eggs on Sunday.

A Donovan family favorite: Lamb & Apple Stew

Chocolate Ganache Cupcakes (I used this recipe)

Chocolate, Caramel & Banana Cream Pie (a favorite from SF’s famed Tartine)

Epicurious on the Go

Epicurious on the Go

epicuriousapp

Recently we came across a great iPhone app that will change your life….well cooking life that is. Courtesy of the people who bring you Epicurious, their iPhone app (also for the iPod touch) is so great,  you’ll get off your tush  and to the store in search of ingredients for the recipes.

We downloaded the app (for free!) a few weeks back and have been experimenting with the recipes since. What’s particularly great about this app is you can search for recipes by ingredient, meal type, cuisine – you name it. There are even categories for weeknight dinners, healthy snacks and cocktail recipes. For instance, we have a bottle of elderflower concentrate we want to include in a cocktail, we searched “elderflower’ and voila – up came a handful or cocktail recipes we could create with elderflower as an ingredient. Love it!

As for the other features? The app gives you the ability to save recipes in your virtual recipe box and transfer ingredients into a shopping list. Can you say genius? Perfect for the girl on the go who is trying to spread her culinary wings. We’re seriously addicted to this app, in fact, we just created a shopping list for three weeknight dinners we want to try. Now it’s just a matter of gathering the stamina to hit Trader Joe’s after work… le sigh.
