If there’s one thing I look forward to when temperatures start dropping, it’s cashmere season. Over the years, I’ve built quite the collection of cashmere sweaters, and after trying styles from dozens of brands at a variety of price points, I’ve learned that not all cashmere is created equal.

Some of my favorite sweaters have been in my closet for five years or longer and still look beautiful. Others haven’t held up nearly as well. And while I’m willing to invest in quality cashmere, I’ve also found some wonderful, more affordable options that deserve a place in a well-rounded wardrobe.

In this guide, I’m sharing the best cashmere sweaters for women that I’ve personally owned, worn and loved. From classic crewnecks and oversized knits to striped sweaters and cozy cardigans, these are the styles I consistently reach for, along with my honest thoughts on quality, fit, sizing and whether they’re worth the investment.

I’ve included both luxury cashmere sweaters and more budget-friendly options, plus a few things I’ve learned about shopping for cashmere and keeping it looking beautiful year after year.

If I had to narrow it down to just a few favorites, my La Ligne Solid Mini Marin, Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman and La Ligne Lean Lines sweaters would top the list for their quality, versatility and how much wear I’ve gotten out of them over the years.

La Ligne Marin Sweater

Several years ago I fell in love with the small brand La Ligne who makes delicious cashmere and I’ve been wearing them ever since. They are $$$ but given how much I live in my collection of cashmere sweaters and how beautifully these are made, they’ve been worth it.

The most plush, luxurious sweater with a perfectly slouchy oversized yet tailored fit – the La Ligne Marin Sweater is a cashmere dream. Warm enough for the winter but also magically great for summer nights, too.

La Ligne Solid Mini Marin

And here’s the solid version of the Mini Marin. I’m wearing a L in the Cream colorway. Easily one of my most worn sweaters. So much so that I now own it in gray, black and camel as well.

I especially love the slightly cropped length because it works beautifully with high-waisted denim, skirts and trousers without requiring a lot of tucking.

La Ligne Mini Marin Sweater

The Mini Marin is the cropped, slightly shrunken version of their Marin Sweater. I like to pair it with high waisted pants or denim but it also goes well with midi skirts.

I have this in two colors as well – Black/Cream and Navy/White. I own it in a Medium but recommend sizing up if you like a roomier fit.

La Ligne Lean Lines Sweater

I wore this sweater so much in black/camel that I bought it in ivory/camel for summer and winter wear and now own several colors that get so, so much wear. I draped it over my shoulders all summer with my ivory dresses and now I’ve gone on to acquire additional colors of the Solid Lean Lines Sweater as well (see below). 

It is my most worn cashmere sweater year round.

It’s such a versatile striped knit and I love the extra long sleeves on it that means the stripe pokes out under jackets. I love the Black & Tan I bought as it looks great layered under black jackets or camel coats. It’s super soft, not overly bulky and comes with side slits that make it easy to tuck.

La Ligne Solid Lean Lines Sweater

Of course after wearing my striped collection to death, I had to get the solid versions.

I own the black, the ivory and the camel now all in a size L. I love the long cuffs (especially when they stick out of outerwear) and how easy it is to tuck.

La Ligne Solid Lean Lines V-Neck Sweater

I am not usually a v-neck gal, but this one changed my mind. I’m wearing mine in a size L but probably could have done a M as the neckline makes it fit a bit different than the crewneck I own in several colors and adore.

Just like the crewneck version, the extra long sleeves on this make it look chic when styled with a jacket.

I particularly like it layered over a favorite crewneck tee. 

La Ligne Solid Lean Lines Cardigan

Prefer a cardigan? This style now comes in a cardigan version. I bought it in black in a size L. It comes in so many fun colors!

I like wearing it buttoned but it also versatile enough to wear over your shoulders or wear it open.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman Sweater

I love how versatile this sweater is. And man, is it soft. After buying it I found myself reaching for it again and again. And I’ve had no significant issue with pilling whatsoever on it (a true sign of the quality of their 100% cashmere) and why I feel it is worth its price tag. It has a classic crewneck silhouette and I love the subtly texture to it. It feels extremely luxurious every time I slip it on. 

I find it true to size – I am wearing a M. I now own this in the Oatmeal (seen above), the Ivory, the Black and the Charcoal.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman Hoodie

Slouchy, comfy, cozy perfection. Both the body and the hood are slightly oversized making this a 100% cashmere sweater you’ll want to live in.

In the winter I absolutely love traveling in this cozy sweater. It’s cute with jeans but also pairs well with my favorite leggings and joggers.

I sized up to a size Large for a more oversized fit. I just bought the black because I get so much wear out of the oatmeal color I own.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Half Zip

I live in this sweater in Fall and Winter. It’s so cozy and perfect for pairing with jeans and with leggings and also a piece I love to wear on long haul flights, too. The cashmere is so thick and luxe.

Jenni Kayne Cooper Cardigan

This cardigan went viral on Instagram and for good reason thanks to its chic silhouette and oversized cuffs. Thanks to its 30% cashmere it is very soft to the touch but given it is not 100% cashmere I do with the price wasn’t so steep.

This runs really small. I had to size up to an XL to be able to wear it buttoned. 

Jenni Kayne Jet Cashmere Turtleneck

The coziest oversized 100% cashmere turtleneck. It runs rather oversized. I’m wearing a S above. 

This is great with satin pants or jeans as styled above. I particularly love it under some of my favorite coats.

Jenni Kayne Amelia Cashmere Crewneck

I’ve worn this non stop since getting it two years ago. It’s the perfect oversized knit. I’ve worn it with trousers as styled above but also belted with a slip skirt. It’s also great with leggings for winter travel days. I love how warm it is and how luxe it feels.

Jenni Kayne Flynn Cashmere Sweater

I think I’m becoming a V neck person right now!? I’m still very picky about them as I have a larger chest and sometimes V-necks can look awful on me but this one is great!

I got the size L so that it wasn’t too form-fitting and think it was the perfect choice. It is available in sizes XS through 3X and in several colors. 

COS Cashmere Crewneck

This COS sweater that is one of the most versatile and flattering pieces I own. I like that each year they introduce some unique colors that feel fresh and on trend. 

Their cashmere is really good. It’s wearability, quality and versatility make it worth the price tag in my opinion. I’m wearing a Medium. I like that their cashmere styles are also very timeless meaning you’ll own and be able to wear the pieces for many, many years.

In addition to their cashmere sweaters, I’ve also purchased cashmere hats and scarves from the brand. If you’re not familiar with them, they are the higher-end label to sister brand H&M.

For a more oversized, street style approach, consider buying the men’s version for a borrowed-from-the-boys kinda vibe.

Aqua Ribbed Cashmere Crewneck

Bloomingdale’s in-house label of cashmere is such good value.

This ribbed cashmere sweater of mine from the line is one of my most worn pieces that I bought about six or seven years ago. Wearing a size M.

J.Crew Cashmere Crewneck

If you’re looking for cashmere on more of a budget, this crewneck is a great option. It has a good weight to it, a classic silhouette and loads of colors to choose from. It is priced at $148 which is well priced for 100% cashmere and has lots of sizing options, too.

I have mine in a size L and I get loads of wear out of this sweater.

J.Crew Relaxed Cashmere T-shirt

A cashmere tee? Yes! This cashmere tee is a favorite layering building block for me. It pairs really well under my favorite cropped jackets and blazers. I own it in three colors now.

I size up to a L. 

SoldoutNYC Cashmere Crewneck

I include this item with a caveat that it is only 10% cashmere! But that being said, it’s a great wool sweater with a touch of cashmere in it which makes it a bit softer than a 100% wool sweater and therefore ups its cozy factor.

I own it in two colors in a size M.

Tuckernuck Boyfriend Cashmere Sweater

This is a newer addition to my cashmere closet and I love the espresso color and the fact that there are so many personalization options for it! I had my initials put on the sleeve and it’s the cutest touch I think.

For being a “boyfriend” style I do think it runs small. I’m wearing a Large but for a true boyfriend styling I think I could have gone with an XL. 

White + Warren Essential Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

The White + Warren essential cashmere sweater is another favorite investment cashmere sweater of mine. White + Warren is definitely on the pricier side but if you’re going to buy investment pieces, cashmere is a great way to start.

I love this sweater on its own but it is also great layered under cardigans during the coldest of months. I have owned it for several years and it still gets loads of wear. They also make it in a v-neck version if that’s more your style. 

I also have the White + Warren cashmere travel wrap and it’s so dreamy for work from home and for travel. I never get on a plane without it and own three colorways now. It is *that* good.

Eileen Fisher Cashmere

Made sustainably and often from recycled materials, the Eileen Fisher cashmere is $$$ but oh-so-plush.

The above turtleneck from six years ago is one of the absolute coziest pieces in my entire closet. I always reach for it on the coldest days of winter.

How to Tell If a Cashmere Sweater Is Good Quality

After years of buying, wearing and investing in cashmere sweaters, I’ve learned that a higher price tag doesn’t always guarantee better quality. I’ve found some wonderful affordable cashmere sweaters over the years, and I’ve also tried more expensive styles that didn’t necessarily live up to their price tags.

When shopping for quality cashmere, there are a few things I recommend looking for.

Pay Attention to the Fabric Composition

First things first: check the label! A sweater labeled as cashmere isn’t necessarily made from 100% cashmere. Some styles are made with a blend of cashmere and other fibers, which can impact the softness, warmth and overall feel of the sweater.

I personally gravitate toward 100% cashmere for investment pieces, but that doesn’t mean cashmere blends aren’t worth buying. Some blends can actually offer better structure and durability depending on the other materials used. Just be mindful of what you’re paying for.

Consider the Weight and Thickness

Not all cashmere sweaters are created equal when it comes to weight. Some are beautifully lightweight and ideal for layering, while others have a thicker, more substantial feel that makes them perfect for cold winter days.

I love having a mix of both in my wardrobe. My La Ligne Lean Lines sweaters are favorites for year-round wear because they’re not overly bulky, whereas my Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman Sweaters are some of my favorite cozy knits when temperatures drop.

A thicker sweater isn’t automatically better quality, but I do pay attention to how substantial the fabric feels and whether the knit seems tightly and evenly constructed.

Look at How the Sweater Holds Up Over Time

For me, one of the biggest indicators of quality is how a cashmere sweater wears over the years.

Does it maintain its shape? Does the fabric still feel soft? Has it developed excessive pilling? These are all things I pay attention to when deciding whether a cashmere sweater is worth recommending.

Some pilling is completely normal with cashmere, particularly in areas that experience friction, like under the arms or where a handbag rubs against the fabric. But a good-quality cashmere sweater should be able to withstand regular wear and proper care without quickly looking worn out.

It’s one of the reasons I love my Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman Sweater so much. I’ve had very little issue with pilling, despite wearing mine frequently.

Think About Cost Per Wear

Cashmere can certainly be an investment, but I always consider cost per wear when deciding whether a sweater is worth the splurge.

Some of my most expensive cashmere sweaters are also among the hardest-working pieces in my wardrobe. I reach for them year after year, style them in countless ways and have found that they hold up beautifully with proper care.

My advice? Invest in classic silhouettes and colors you know you’ll wear regularly, and don’t assume you need to spend a fortune to find a great cashmere sweater.

What brand makes the best cashmere sweaters?

Some of my favorite cashmere sweater brands are Jenni Kayne, La Ligne, COS, J.Crew and White + Warren. I’ve personally owned and worn cashmere from all of these brands and have found styles I consistently reach for year after year.

For luxurious, substantial cashmere, I particularly love Jenni Kayne and La Ligne. COS makes wonderful classic cashmere sweaters that feel elevated without the designer price tag, while J.Crew is one of my favorite places to shop for more affordable cashmere.

Are expensive cashmere sweaters worth it?

In my experience, yes, they absolutely can be! But that doesn’t mean every expensive cashmere sweater is worth its price tag.

I’ve invested in cashmere sweaters that I’ve worn for years, making them some of the best purchases in my wardrobe. I think the key is choosing timeless silhouettes, versatile colors and quality materials that you’ll continue reaching for season after season.

That said, there are plenty of good cashmere sweaters available at more approachable price points. I wouldn’t recommend spending more simply for the sake of a designer label.

What is the best affordable cashmere sweater?

For affordable cashmere sweaters, I particularly like J.Crew and COS.

J.Crew’s classic Cashmere Crewneck is a wonderful wardrobe staple that comes in a wide variety of colors. I appreciate its classic silhouette and think it’s a great option if you’re looking to introduce cashmere into your wardrobe without making a major investment.

COS is another favorite of mine for well-made, timeless cashmere sweaters. I particularly love their classic crewneck, which I’ve purchased in multiple colors over the years.

Is 100% cashmere better than a cashmere blend?

Not necessarily! While 100% cashmere is prized for its softness, warmth and luxurious feel, a well-made cashmere blend can also be a wonderful addition to your wardrobe.

Blending cashmere with other fibers can help a sweater maintain its shape, improve durability or create a different texture.

Personally, I tend to prefer 100% cashmere when investing in more expensive sweaters, but I own and enjoy cashmere blends as well. I always recommend checking the fabric composition before purchasing so you know exactly what you’re getting for the price.

How do you keep cashmere sweaters from pilling?

A little pilling is normal with cashmere, even with high-quality sweaters. Pilling occurs when loose fibers rub together and form small balls on the surface of the fabric, particularly in areas that experience frequent friction.

To help minimize pilling, I recommend being mindful of how you wear and care for your cashmere. Avoid excessive friction from handbags or rough fabrics, and give your sweaters a break between wears when possible.

I also swear by having a good fabric shaver on hand to gently remove pills as they appear. Just be careful not to press too hard or catch the knit when using one.

How often should you wash cashmere sweaters?

One of the wonderful things about cashmere is that you generally don’t need to wash it after every wear.

Unless a sweater is visibly dirty or has absorbed odors, I recommend airing it out and using a cashmere spray between wears rather than washing it constantly. Washing too frequently can put unnecessary stress on the delicate fibers.

When it is time to wash your cashmere, always check the garment’s care label first. Many cashmere sweaters can be gently hand-washed in cool water using a detergent formulated for wool or cashmere. This is the cashmere detergent I use.

Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, and lay the sweater flat to dry so it maintains its shape. And whatever you do, don’t hang wet cashmere sweaters to dry! The weight of the water can cause the knit to stretch and lose its shape.
