If I could return to Provence every summer, I would. It remains one of my favorite places on earth and is one of the most requested areas we trip for clients through my travel atelier En Route to Rêverie.
One of the most charming towns you’ll visit in Provence is that of Gordes. Built into the mountainside and offering gorgeous views, you’ll want to include this on your Provence itinerary without a doubt. I have returned many a time and never get over how delightful it is.
A Divine Day in Gordes, Provence
As you spend time in the area you’re likely to visit Ile Sur La Sorgue and Aix en Provence but if you want to get a taste of quaint Provence, head East to visit Gordes. While there is public transportation you’ll be better off having a car to explore the village and its surrounding areas.
Things to Do in Gordes, France
Visit La Bastide de Gordes.
Nestled in the heart of the village you’ll find this charming Airelles Gordes La Bastide property. It is without fail, one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever experienced and is a wonderful partner for my travel atelier En Route to Rêverie.
Our En Route to Rêverie clients get complimentary breakfast, upgrades upon arrival, subject to availability, a $100 credit to be used at the spa or on dining and early check-in / late checkout, subject to availability.
This is the place to stay in Gordes.
La Bastide de Gordes is situated within the town in what used to be a castle, nestled on the rocky slopes of Gordes.
Years ago when I first went we made a half day of it. Before our spa treatments we indulged in lunch at the hotel’s L’Orangerie and I couldn’t have loved it more. It’s pricey but such a lovely experience. I had burrata with heirloom tomatoes and an amazing Grand Marnier souffle with vanilla bourbon ice cream.
A favorite feature? The butter that arrived in its very own sterling silver cloche. It may have been some of the best bread and butter I’ve ever had.
I’ve since been back for dinner and was really underwhelmed so I wouldn’t recommend dinner at this spot although the hotel does boast several dining options including a popular Italian place called La Bastide de Pierres.
The Sisley Spa was utterly luxurious and so peaceful.
Upon arrival, it feels as though you are entering a monastery of serenity. The treatment rooms are large and welcoming and each even come with a private terrace for you to enjoy your service outdoors if you’d like.
The spa offers different face and body treatments, massages from around the world as well as beauty treatments, all featuring the gorgeous Sisley Paris products. It also boasts an indoor heated pool and private terrace for spa guests where we laid out in the sun and read following our blissful massages. A hammam, steam room and sensorial showers are all also available alongside endless water, tea and light snacks. It was truly heaven on earth.
Visit Les Caves du Palais Saint-Firmin
Get to know the history of Gordes at this small yet charming museum
Visit the Abbaye Notre Dame de Senanque
A few miles down the road from Gordes is the famed Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque.
Built in 1148 the structure is rather breathtaking and it is one of the most photographed places in all of France when its lavender fields are in bloom in late June. This is a place deeply important to the history of Gordes.
Take in an Exhibition
The Château de Gordes is the Gordes castle that now serves as a cultural center putting on a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.
Go olive oil tasting
Pay a visit to the olive oil mill Clos des Jeannons and bring some home as a souvenir. You can indulge in some tastings and then pick a favorite to bring home to enjoy at home or as a gift to someone.
Visit Village des Bories
This open air museum is a short drive from the village of Gordes featuring 20 or so dry stone huts. I don’t think it is a must-do however.
Visit the Gordes Lookout
The Gordes overlook provides sweeping views and is the perfect place for a photo opp. It’s best to go early as it can get crowded and there’s very little parking.
Dine at La Trinquette
A delightful and tucked away spot for a good lunch full of seasonal produce.
Shop at the Market
On market day in Gordes the town comes alive. The weekly market takes place every Tuesday morning from 8 AM–1 PM and is held at Place du Monument right near the Gordes castle.
It is absolutely worth a visit so you can browse and shop the local produce, cheese, homemade nougat, charcuterie and even market bags, lavender soaps and French linens.
Step inside the Eglise Saint Firmin
This church is dedicated to Saint Firmin, the patron saint of the village of Gordes. It was built in the 18th century and is absolutely beautiful.. At that time, Gordes’s population was large and the medieval church became too small and was demolished along with about twenty homes to make room for the church present today.
Pick up Macarons at Laduree
I have to say I was kind of sad to see a Laduree in Gordes open up recently. It somehow just didn’t fit the centuries old town? It sort of sticks out. But if you’re not visiting elsewhere in France that you may be able to pick up their famed macarons, you may want to pop in for a box.
This location also has one of their tea rooms which could be good for a light (mediocre) meal.
. . .
Getting into the town of Gordes from the Eastern side is a bit tricky due to small, winding roads up to the top. And you’ll want to pray to the parking gods that you find a spot. But, once you begin to explore, it is well worth it. There are loads of charming, cobblestone streets, small eateries and little shops to see.
There is so much to see and explore in Provence and working with an expert is definitely highly encouraged so you can make the most of your time.
