The 4th arrondissement of Paris is full of character, charm and history. It is home to historical sites, art galleries, interesting shops and is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in Paris.
A Guide To Paris’s 4th Arrondissement
Where Is The 4th Arrondissement In Paris?
The 4th arrondissement of Paris (often seen written as the IVe arrondissement) is one of the twenty arrondissements of the capital city. It neighbors the 3rd arrondissement and the two together are referred to as Le Marais.
The 4th arrondissement is known for its little winding streets, plentiful cafés and shops but it is also often regarded by Parisians as expensive and overly crowded following an explosion in its popularity in the past fifteen years.
Things To Do In 4th Arrondissement Paris
Centre Pompidou
Named after Georges Pompidou you can’t miss the wildly modern, seemingly out of place museum that is the Pompidou Center. It is Paris’s modern art museum and features a variety of permanent and special exhibits, a special section for kids and a rooftop restaurant. The museums offers wonderful views over Paris.
This museum is set to be closed for several years to be renovated starting in 2025.
Place des Vosges
This historic square is one of my very favorite places in all of Paris.
Notre-Dame de Paris
The eastern part of the Île de la Cité which is home to Notre Dame Cathedral is included in the 4th arrondissement. The church remains closed following the 2019 fire that devastated much of the roof and other parts of the iconic building. It is expected to open near the end of 2024.
Hôtel de Ville
This Renaissance-era building services as Paris City Hall and was rebuilt between 1874 and 1882. During the holidays it features a Christmas market of sorts.
Île Saint-Louis
This charming island is a must-see when you visit Paris. Find out what not to miss in my guide of What to See on Île de la Cité and Île Saint Louis.
Taste Berthillon Ice Cream
No visit to Île Saint-Louis is complete without tasting famed and legendary Berthillon ice cream. Many places on the island serve it but going to the original storefront is the best in my opinion. I’ve been eating Berthillon since I was a little girl!
Dine
There’s an abundance of places to dine in the 4th arrondissement. I save all my very favorite restaurant recommendations in Paris for my En Route to Rêverie Rêverie in Paris clients but further below are a few reliable spots to consider.
Take a food tour
If you want to try a variety of the best bites that this neighborhood has to offer, consider a food tour. We have a variety of vendors we love sending our En Route to Rêverie Rêverie in Paris clients to. I am also able to arrange private wine tastings and other experiences in this neighborhood.
Visit Art Galleries
This neighborhood has loads of art galleries to explore if this is something you enjoy!
Shop
Get off at Metro stop Saint Paul and you’ll be right in the midst of plenty of shopping to explore. You’ll find high street stores like Sandro and Maje but also a variety of epiceries and vintage stores, too.
Tour the Jewish Quarter
Since the end of the 19th century, the Marais has been populated by a significant Jewish population with the Rue des Rosiers being at the heart of its community. There are a handful of kosher restaurants and Jewish institutions and you can also find walking tours of the area to learn more about the history.
Best Restaurants In 4th Arrondissement Paris
I save all my very favorite restaurant recommendations in Paris for my En Route to Rêverie Rêverie in Paris clients but below are a few reliable spots to consider.
L’As du Fallafel
Simple yet famed Middle Eastern eatery for fast falafels, shawarma & kebabs. There’s indoor dining but most people take it away. Go early if you’d like to avoid a line. I love the Falafel Special sandwich and if you like spicy food get their hot sauce added! This is a great affordable lunch option with most sandwiches being under 10 Euros. Note they are closed on Sundays.
Season Paris
Healthy yet delicious light fare and juices. Salads, granola and grain bowls abound in this bright and airy space in the Marais. An En Route to Rêverie favorite for many years. Open every day.
Georges Rooftop at the Centre Pompidou
This is a striking restaurant in an equally striking museum. Upscale dining surrounded by floor to ceiling windows that offer gorgeous views of Paris on a clear day. Not the most amazing food you’ll ever have, but worth it if you’re looking for a restaurant with a view. Has a great terrace for sunny days as well and on the ascent to the top of the museum you can take in Paris from above. Book before sunset if you want to watch the sun go down behind the Eiffel Tower. Closed Tuesdays.
La Brasserie de l’Isle Saint-Louis
This spot has friendly service and is situated on an iconic and photogenic corner on Île Saint Louis. The tables outside offer ideal people watching views.
