After more than 30 trips to Paris, I’ve spent years testing my way to the best French pharmacy skincare, and one of my favorite rituals is still wandering the aisles of a French pharmacy.
I always return home with a suitcase full of skincare because French pharmacy brands consistently deliver effective formulas, elegant textures and excellent value.
As I’ve gotten older, however, the products I reach for have evolved. In my twenties I was primarily focused on preventing breakouts and finding lightweight hydration. Now in my forties, my skincare priorities are centered around maintaining healthy skin, supporting collagen production, improving hydration, protecting my skin barrier and addressing fine lines and pigmentation.

Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream
Every mature skincare routine should include a barrier repair cream. This one calms irritated skin and claims to restore your skin barrier 4x faster.
I like Avène’s Cicalfate products for:

The Best French Pharmacy Cleansers
I personally don’t use a lot of French pharmacy cleansers as I am quite loyal to those I use in my regular skincare routine. That being said, I do love the micellar waters from French pharmacy brands.
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
I’ve emptied countless bottles over the years.
It’s still one of the gentlest ways to remove makeup without stripping the skin.
Even though I always follow with a proper cleanser, this remains one of my favorite first cleanse products.
Best French Pharmacy Eye Creams
Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Eye Cream
I’ve used this consistently and love how lightweight yet hydrating it feels.
It layers beautifully beneath concealer and helps brighten the under-eye area without feeling heavy.
Caudalie Premier Cru The Eye Cream
For anyone looking to invest in one elevated French eye cream, this would be high on my list. It’s truly great at fighting fine lines around your eyes.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen
I think we all know by now what a major role SPF plays in preventing signs of aging.
French pharmacies carry some of the best sunscreens in the world, particularly because European UV filters are generally more advanced than what’s currently available in the U.S.

My French Pharmacy Skincare Holy Grails in my 40s
After more than 50 visits to Paris, I’ve tried a lot of French pharmacy skincare. At 41, these are the products I continue to use, empty and repurchase because they address the concerns I’m most focused on now: hydration, pigmentation, fine lines, sensitivity and maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Dark Spot Serum
Caudalie’s Vinoperfect serum has been a longtime favorite of mine and is one of the French skincare products I recommend most often. I reach for it to help address discoloration, sun spots and uneven skin tone while adding an overall boost of radiance.
I particularly appreciate that it feels gentle on my skin. Some brightening products and vitamin C formulas can be irritating, but Vinoperfect has always been easy for me to incorporate into my routine.

I’ve also emptied the eye cream from the Vinoperfect line time and time again and love it for daytime use. It is lightweight enough to sit well beneath concealer while still adding hydration to the delicate under-eye area.

My skin absolutely loves this rich cream. I wake up with more radiant, plump skin and it does such a good job at hydrating.

The Premier Cru Eye Cream is another standout from the collection.
I like that it provides lasting hydration without feeling greasy and helps soften the appearance of fine lines around the eyes. It’s my preferred nighttime eye cream. For anyone looking to invest in one elevated French eye cream, this would be high on my list.
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably seen this product mentioned many times. It’s become one of my most relied on products because it calms irritation almost overnight.
It is easy to focus exclusively on retinoids, exfoliants and brightening serums when discussing skincare for mature skin. But treatment products are only useful if your skin barrier can tolerate them. That is where I think La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ comes in.
I reach for it when my skin feels dry, tight, irritated or sensitized. It is particularly useful after travel, during cold New York winters or when I have overdone it with active ingredients.
I don’t use it to replace every other step in my routine. Instead, I treat it as a recovery product that helps me simplify when my skin needs a break.
I love it so much I even travel with a little mini tube of it!
A313 Vitamin A Pommade
This has been a holy grail nighttime staple for me for years now. I use a small amount at night and avoid layering it with other potentially irritating active ingredients.
As with any vitamin A product, it is important to begin slowly, pay attention to how your skin responds and be diligent about sunscreen during the day.
Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream
Like Cicaplast, Avène Cicalfate+ is a helpful product to have on hand when skin feels dry, irritated or overworked.
I think of it less as a traditional anti-aging treatment and more as a recovery product. Mature skin can become drier and more sensitive over time, so having a soothing barrier-supporting cream in your routine can be just as valuable as having a collection of treatment serums.
Nuxe Very Rose Micellar Water
I’ve also emptied the Nuxe Very Rose Micellar Water and enjoyed using it as a gentle first cleanse.
The rose-scented experience makes it feel a little more special than a purely utilitarian makeup remover, while the micellar formula helps lift away makeup and impurities. Those who are sensitive to fragrance may prefer Bioderma, but I enjoyed this one and would use it again.
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
Embryolisse is a longtime French pharmacy classic that works as both a moisturizer and a makeup-prepping cream.
It leaves skin looking moisturized and comfortable, which can be especially helpful when foundation has started settling into dry areas or fine lines. I prefer to use a light hand because the formula is quite rich.
My Mature French Pharmacy Routine
If I were building a simple routine for someone in their forties or beyond, it would look something like this:
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Hydrating serum
- Brightening serum
- Moisturizer
- SPF
Evening
- Double cleanse
- Retinal (2–4 nights weekly)
- Rich moisturizer
- (or) Barrier cream whenever needed
What I Buy in France vs. What I Buy in the U.S.
One of the questions I’m asked most often is which French pharmacy products are still worth buying in France now that so many brands are readily available in the United States.
The answer depends on the product. Some of my longtime favorites are easy to restock at home, while others remain significantly less expensive in France, come in different formulations or are simply easier to find in a well-stocked Paris pharmacy.
What I Prefer to Buy in France
European Sunscreen Formulas
Sunscreen is one of the categories I prioritize while shopping in France. European formulas often use different UV filters than those available in products sold in the United States.
I also find many French facial sunscreens lighter and more pleasant to wear beneath makeup, which makes it easier to apply them consistently. Because products and formulations can change, I always check the packaging carefully and look for the exact formula I want rather than assuming every version is the same across countries.
A313
A313 is one of the products I specifically associate with shopping in a French pharmacy. Availability in the United States can be inconsistent and prices through third-party sellers are often much higher.
Because skincare products can be affected by storage conditions and expiration dates, I prefer buying products like this from a trusted pharmacy rather than an unfamiliar online marketplace.
Larger Sizes and Value Sets
French pharmacies often carry larger bottles, multipacks and promotional sets that are not widely offered in the United States.
Micellar water is a good example. If I know I use a product regularly, I’ll look for a large bottle or a bundled set from Bioderma or Nuxe while I’m in France.
Products That Are Considerably Less Expensive
Pricing varies by brand and exchange rate, but products from Caudalie, Avène, La Roche-Posay, Bioderma and Nuxe can often be less expensive in France.
I don’t automatically purchase something simply because it costs less, but I will stock up on products I already know I use and love.
What I’m Happy to Buy in the U.S.
Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum
Although I often look at Caudalie pricing while I’m in France, Vinoperfect serum is now readily available through reputable U.S. retailers.

That makes it easy to replenish between trips and reduces the temptation to hoard bottles that may sit unopened for too long. I will still compare prices when I’m abroad, but this is no longer something I feel I can only purchase in France.
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+
Cicaplast Baume B5+ is another product I can easily replenish at home. Because I use it as needed rather than every day, I don’t necessarily need to purchase multiple tubes whenever I travel.
Avène Barrier Creams and Cleansers
Many of Avène’s core products are also widely available in the United States. For basic cleansers, moisturizers and barrier-supporting creams, I value the convenience of replacing them as soon as I run out.

Biologique Recherche is French and has been an important part of my skincare experience, but it is not technically a French pharmacy brand. You won’t find Biologique Recherche at the French pharmacies.
The brand is generally sold through authorized spas, estheticians and skincare professionals rather than from the shelves of a traditional pharmacy. So if you go to a French pharmacy looking for it, you won’t find it.
