Loafers are timeless for a reason – they’ve been around in some form for hundreds of years (their history is actually quite interesting!) and remain one of the most classic shoes. And in 2023 they are definitely having a resurgence in popularity – particularly with women. I love that these shoes are genderless and have a multitude of styling options.
Loafers Outfits
You can wear loafers year round but for me they are one of my go-to Fall shoes. Investing in some good pairs of loafers will allow you to have a reliable, versatile shoe to wear. I have a couple pairs I really love and enjoy styling with different outfits. Loafers come in all types of materials and colors and styling loafers depends on the exact style of loafer in my opinion.
There are heeled loafer outfit options, tassel loafers outfits and even chunky loafers outfits but as always I think you should choose a style that is most related to your personal aesthetic. I’m not someone who likes a chunky shoe or a big platform shoe and also find tassel loafers a bit too preppy for me so I steer clear of those.
How To Style Loafers
As you can see in the outfit inspiration below that I share from my own personal collection, I like a more streamlined look and also really enjoy pairing my favorite loafers with more casual pieces.
At the bottom of this post you can shop loafer styles I own, those I saw being sold now that I like and you can shop pieces to pair with your loafer looks as inspired by the outfits seen below. The styles I rounded up come from brands I really love and are at all different price points.
With Jeans and a Blazer
This is my most popular way to style the loafers I own. I love loafers with a pair of cropped boyfriend jeans. And adding in a bit of light distressing is such a good juxtaposition of the formality of the shoe. Top the look off with an oversized blazer and you have a really easy outfit uniform to follow.
Particularly in Fall and Winter, I love pairing my plaid blazers with loafers.
With Socks
I love pairing a classic loafer with a more playful, feminine sock like these swiss dot ones. I own this pair and this pair and they are great for both loafers or favorite pairs of booties.
With Leather Pants
I think pairing a really formal shoe with an edgier pant like a faux leather pant is such a cool off-duty style. In this look I layered a more business casual oversized button down and a menswear-style tailored blazer-inspired jacket.
This pair of Gucci loafers is my most worn style.
With Ponte Pants
I love a loafer paired with a good pair of ponte pants or dress pants. This is a go-to style for me for work meetings or more formal business occasions when I don’t want to wear a heel.
With a Trench Coat
I love trench coats year round but especially in Fall. This combination is pairing two very timeless styles that both borrow from traditional menswear silhouettes and ensembles.

With Stripes
With a nod to classic French inspired style, combining your pair of loafers with a great striped tee and topped off with a blazer is stylish and simple uniform that’ll age well no matter the year.

Such a helpful post, thank you! I’ve been wanting to try the loafer trend again but have had a total mental block about how to realistically wear them. Love the stripes outfit especially!
