The other day I was listening to a podcast in where the interviewee said one of the most profound quotes that she’s let guide her life is “We must risk delight” by Rumi. It struck a chord with me. (Fun fact: I’ve been pretty obsessed with quotes since high school. My Pinterest board dedicated to them is one of my favorites and I still love mulling over moving quotes to this day when I come across one that speaks to me and makes me stop and think.)
Back to the quote…
You see, I’m a relatively risk adverse person. I’m a rule follower to a T and rather conservative when it comes to making decisions. (When I was deciding to make one of my biggest risks of all, I planned and plotted for six months to do so!) But when I look back in life my biggest risks have also been my most meaningful. Going to California for college, moving to New York at 25, deciding to work for myself…all of those decisions felt very scary when I was making them. The fear of the unknown would rattle me deeply. But each of those risks have paid off in such beneficial ways that I now can’t imagine having taken them!
The risk truly often is worth the reward and it had me thinking all weekend about things I’d do if I didn’t let fear get in the way. For someone who is rather Type A this can be an interesting exercise- HA!
So this Monday let’s play a little game: what would you risk for delight…? What’s something you would do if fear weren’t a factor? Do tell!
I’ll go first: I’d move to Brooklyn and into an apartment by myself.

p.s. my thoughts on being self conscious and thoughts on gratitude.
I would quit everything I was doing and go to culinary school. Abroad.
Maybe I’ll just start with a cooking class here and there in the city ?
Ahhh that would be so incredible!! I’m down to do a cooking class with you if we want to start small 😉
What an inspiring post – still deciding what I’d risk for delight! But in the meantime, you look fantastic in that dress!

Thank you, M!!!
Not sure that I consider myself a risk taker, but I do have a personal motto that I truly do live by, “I will not die an unlived life”. I like to take myself out of my comfort zone. In doing so I find that I pay more attention to my days, am enthusiastic about trying new things and meet many interesting people along the way. It’s Sunday. The day I usually try to look to /plan the week ahead. It’s shaping up to be a very busy week. But I’m keeping my heart open for new opportunities that might come my way. And my scheduled routine just might have to adjust.
Meghan, I wish you a fantastic, well lived week. xo
Aw, Nancy! What a powerful life motto and a lovely one at that. You’ve always taught me the importance of kindness and strength in life and I’m so grateful for that. May we both always keep our hearts open to new opportunities. Sending you so much love! xx
