I have a funny history with this dress. I bought it last fall at the Diane Von Furstenberg sample sale because I had it in this print/fabric and loved it so much. If you’ve ever been to a sample sale you know they can be rather…shall we say…stressful. And because of this I didn’t really try this dress on fully and by the time I went to wear it to a holiday party in San Francisco at the time I had put on some pounds (I have a lot of trouble maintaining my weight for varied health reasons) and when I saw a photo of myself in it later that night I burst into tears. Yep, tears. Needless to say I hadn’t had the desire to wear it again (in fact I even had put it up for sale promptly after said incident).
All that aside I took a deep breath and decided to give it one more shot after I pulled it out of the depths of my teeny, tiny NYC closet the other day and am glad I did. It’s good to have some dresses you can depend on in the winter and style in fun ways like pairing a denim jacket even though snow is on the ground.
And much more importantly I think it’s a good reminder to revisit certain piece that maybe at one point didn’t make you feel so good about yourself. Wearing this dress again last week reminded me of that horrid moment when I felt so low and made me remember all the good things I do have going in my life. Even better? It encouraged me to recall that what’s inside truly is more important than what’s outside. But I think we can all agree that sometimes the outside has a way of really affecting how we feel (more so than I wish it would). And you know what? I think that’s ok, too. And so is a good ol’ damn cry on occasion as well.
Outfit: DVF dress (old obviously but a very cute sleeveless version here), Levi’s denim jacket, DKNY tights, Coach x Frye boots (love the shorter version here), Club Monaco hat, Rebecca Minkoff necklace (c/o), Gorjana necklace, BaubleBar bracelet (c/o), Sophie Hulme bag

You look so cute! I got that dress last year but had to return it… it looked awful on me! Boo. Love it on you though. xx
It’s a beautiful color, and it looks fabulous on you! So glad you kept it, but I can totally relate. It’s really hard when you imagine or remember something looking a certain way and then it doesn’t. Even though the way we look shouldn’t really matter, it does, and I think it’s totally legit to acknowledge that and embrace it.
