Over the last fifteen years, I’ve slowly built a designer handbag collection rather than buying everything at once, and along the way I’ve found that some of the best designer bags under $1000 rival pieces that cost four times as much. While I now own bags in my collection from brands like Chanel, Celine, Loewe and Saint Laurent, some of the bags I reach for most still cost well under $1,000.
The reality is that you don’t need to spend $4,000 on a handbag to own something beautifully made. There are dozens of contemporary designers producing timeless, exceptionally crafted bags that rival many luxury houses in both quality and design.
Whether you’re shopping for your first designer handbag or adding another classic to your collection, these are the bags I think are worth considering.
31 Designer Bags Under $1000 Worth Buying
Why trust my recommendations?
I’ve been writing about fashion for nearly twenty years and have built my handbag collection gradually over the last decade and a half. While I own investment bags from Chanel, Celine, Loewe and Saint Laurent, I regularly recommend contemporary brands because I believe exceptional design doesn’t have to come with a five-figure price tag. Every bag featured here is one I’ve personally owned, considered purchasing or would confidently recommend based on its craftsmanship, design and value. That’s why I’m so passionate about tracking down designer bags under $1000 that still feel special.
As you browse the below styles I’ve curated, remember that you can also look at designer resale sites like The RealReal, Vestiare Collective and Fashionphile for like-new and lightly used designer goods.
I also love browsing the Shopbop Archive to see what gems they have.
What I Look For Before Buying a Designer Bag
I’m particular about everything I add to my wardrobe, especially when hunting for designer bags under $1000 that will actually last. When it comes to what I look for in a designer bag, I usually consider the following:
- quality leather
- timeless silhouettes
- neutral colors
- minimal logos
- versatility
- cost per wear
- resale value
- weight
- functionality

Mansur Gavriel Rhea Bag
I’d put money on this bag being Saint Laurent if I didn’t know better. The metal handle is so chic and makes this bag feel a bit like jewelry for your outfit. I adore it.
Loewe Paula’s Ibiza Tote
Another great over the shoulder tote bag perfect for styling all summer long with your favorite summer dresses.
Hunting Season makes similar styles for a bit less that are often more in-stock.

Loewe Small Leather Trimmed Raffia Tote
My most used summer bag is this chic and understated bag that captures the spirit of a summer spent on France’s cote d’azur. It is perfectly sized to hold all of your daily essentials.
Toteme Scoop Suede Clutch
So simple and yet so striking. I can’t decide if I like the soft gray or the black more but either way you can’t go wrong with this clutch that you’ll get so much wear out of.

3.1 Phillip Lim ID Bag
Every girl needs a good crossbody bag that you can wear during the day or transition to night. This new bag from 3.1 Phillip Lim (a brand that had all but fell off my radar despite having a chokehold on street style when I first moved to NYC 14 years ago tbh) is beautiful. It’s understated yet special feeling and perfectly transitions from more casual to dressier looks.
And at under $700 this one is a much better price point than a lot of designer bags from European brands.
Tory Burch Romy Tote
I got this bag earlier this year and was surprised how much wear it got. I love it for being so understated (unlike many of Burch’s bag designs) yet a practical shape for lots of wear.
There’s a larger version also available.

Manu Atelier Cambon Bag
A chic bag that just begs the question “I love your bag – where is it from?”
Manu Atelier Tote du Jour
I just added this bag to my collection. It feels very Toteme to me but is so well priced. The quality is excellent.
Manu Atelier Fidele Bag
A cute little crossbody that fits just enough.

Longchamp Mini Pliage
Longchamp is such a great brand. Well made, well priced and lots of both timeless and on-trend styles to browse when it comes to their bag offerings.
This little raffia pliage bag gets loads of use from me and I love that it comes with a removable crossbody strap.
Demellier New York Leather Tote
This brand’s bags have the vibes of Celine or Saint Laurent but are much more an attainable price point. DeMellier’s ‘New York’ tote has been handcrafted in Southern Spain using traditional techniques. It’s made using textured-leather in a softly folded shape and features tubular handles that will sit comfortably in the crook of your arm or over your shoulder.
There’s more than enough space inside for your wallet, sunglasses case and latest read. The larger size would make for an excellent work bag under $1,000.
Demellier Hudson Bag
A great top handle bag that looks far more expensive than its price tag.
Demellier Siena Saddle Bag
A far more affordable option of the Chloe Marcie bag. Loads of colors available. I love that you can carry it via top handle or as a crossbody bag. I think it’s a great bag to pack for trips.
Demellier Vancouver Crossbody Bag
Similar in style to my Celine Box bag but a fraction of the price, the DeMellier’s ‘Vancouver’ shoulder bag comes in a variety of leather and raffia and leather or canvas and leather in a structured shape.
These crossbody bags fasten with the signature double arrow-shaped clasp that matches the gold-tone hardware at the top.
Mansur Gavriel Candy Bag
It’s giving Saint Laurent vibes for a fraction of the cost. I love the various sizes available in this versatile bag.

Parisi Wang Jane Bucket Bag
If you’ve always wanted an Hermes Picotin bag but would like a more affordable option – I recommend this cute one that has similar vibes, it was an immediate yes.
You can use code MEGHAN12 for 12% off sitewide including this cutie bag.
Gucci Opiedia Mini Bag
If you’re a fan of the Gucci logo canvas print, this is a darling mini bag under $1000 from the brand.
Saint Laurent Calypso Clutch
Understated yet luxurious this clutch is made from supple leather padded for pillowy softness. It’s sized for just the essentials and punctuated with a gold-tone logo plaque.
Perfect for dressed up or dressed down outfits.
Hunting Season Satin Clutch
This is such a gorgeous evening clutch. Polished, sophisticated and under $800. It looks like a piece that is destined to be an heirloom.
Dragon Diffusion
They make super cool woven bags. Their Bamboo Triple Jump is what put the label on the map. It’s so versatile and looks more high end in construction than the (many) knockoffs by high street brands.
Want this look for even less? I have one by Madewell – their affordable woven leather bags are great.
Liffner Belted Bucket Bag
So chic and under $700. I’ve heard people rave about the quality of the bags from this brand. I’m adding this one to my own personal wish list to add to my bag collection.
It comes in a variety of sizes and colors and materials.
Liffner Mega Sprout Tote
This would make for a great travel or work tote. It’s giving Khaite but for much, much less.
Liffner Pillow Pouch Bag
This bag is, too cute! Love the versatility of it. I’ve added it to my personal wish list.
The brand has a variety of styles on Shopbop, too if you prefer to shop there.
Neous Gemini Roll Shoulder Bag
This brand makes super luxe feeling accessories when it comes to bag and shoes. Their little roll shoulder bag feels very on trend.
Tory Burch Lee Radziwell Bag
Very understated for the Tory Burch brand, I love the lock on this and that you can wear it either as a crossbody or as a clutch. This would be a great option if you love the Hermes Kelly styles but they are out of budget for you.
Tory Burch Romy Bucket Bag
Another understated bag from the brand that would be extremely versatile. I love how many color and fabric options they offer.
Toteme T-Lock Clutch
As seen on so many it girls the past two seasons. I fear it won’t be under $1000 for much longer. Choose from suede or leather for under $1000 or splurge for the croc that will be a higher price point.
Toteme Three Fold Clutch
I have this croc-effect clutch that is great for running errands or a night out on the town.

Mansur Gavriel Cabas Tote
Love The Row?
Consider the Mansur Gavriel Cabas.
Mansur Gavriel was first made famous for their tote bags and their new Cabas tote bucket bag is such a good do-it-all-bag in my opinion.
I bought it as it was a fraction of the price of the similar The Row style I had my eye on and I’m super happy with the purchase.
Staud
Staud is one of my favorite fashion labels for both clothing and their well-made bags that are always on-trend. Some are bit too whimsical for my liking, however.
A.P.C.
A.P.C’s French bags have cult-like status with Parisian girls and I like the Grace Bag in particular.
Are Designer Bags Worth It?
If you’re a fashion fan and love to make a statement with your accessories, designer bags under $1000 are absolutely worth it. I think it is best to buy them in neutral colors you won’t tire of. Doing so also ensures better resale value in my experience.
