If you’ve ever walked into Sephora or browsed makeup brushes online, you’ve probably wondered which ones are actually worth buying. Between foundation brushes, powder brushes, fan brushes and countless eye brushes, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed before you’ve even started.

The truth is, you don’t need a professional makeup artist’s kit to create beautiful everyday makeup.

Over the years, I’ve accumulated (and decluttered!) more makeup brushes than I care to admit. As my makeup routine has become more streamlined, so has my brush collection. Today, I gravitate toward a handful of versatile, well-made brushes that consistently help my makeup apply better, blend more seamlessly and ultimately look more natural.

Whether you’re building your first brush collection or looking to replace a few older favorites, these are the essential makeup brushes I think every makeup bag should include.

Once you have the right brushes, you’ll be able to achieve any number of looks and be prepared for no matter the product you’re looking to apply. Today I’m breaking down the makeup brushes I think are essential for the everyday girl to have on hand to do her makeup.

How Many Makeup Brushes Do You Really Need?

Professional makeup artists often own dozens of brushes because each one serves a highly specific purpose. For everyday makeup, however, you can create nearly any look with a thoughtfully curated collection that works for how you do your own makeup day in and day out.

Rather than buying an enormous brush set all at once, I recommend investing in a few quality brushes you’ll reach for every day. Not only will they last for years with proper care, they’ll make every product in your makeup bag work that much better.

Essential Makeup Brushes Every Makeup Bag Should Have

Face Brushes

Foundation Brush

A great foundation brush is one of the best beauty investments you can make. It helps create a smoother, more even finish while often using less product than applying foundation with your fingers.

My current favorite is the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Brush. The densely packed synthetic bristles blend liquid and cream foundations beautifully without leaving streaks, creating a natural, skin-like finish every time.

Powder Brush

Whether you’re setting your entire face or simply dusting powder through your T-zone, a quality powder brush is an everyday essential.

For years now I’ve been using the Saie Powder Brush and absolutely love it. It’s incredibly soft, distributes powder evenly and helps maintain a natural finish rather than making skin look flat or overly matte. Because of its shape and size it makes placement highly targeted.

Concealer Brush

While fingers work in a pinch, a concealer brush gives you much more precise application, especially around the eyes and on blemishes.

I also love using a smaller concealer brush to set under-eye concealer with powder or to apply powder directly over a blemish without disturbing the makeup underneath.

The favorite one I have is the Hourglass Seamless Finish Concealer Brush.

Powder Blush Brush

A fluffy blush brush helps create that soft, diffused flush that’s much harder to achieve with a denser brush.

Using a dedicated blush brush also prevents bronzer or powder from muddying your blush color. I like the Hourglass Blush Brush.

Cream Blush Brush

As cream blushes have become a staple in my routine, this brush has become one of my most-used.

The Merit Blending Brush blends my favorite cream blushes and also works in a snap on cream contour, too when I’m traveling and carrying less makeup brushes.

Bronzer Brush

For cream bronzer, I love a dense buffing brush.

The Saie Big Buffing Bronzer Brush blends product seamlessly without disturbing the makeup underneath, creating a soft, sun-kissed finish that never looks patchy or muddy.

If you’re a powder bronzer user, I like to use a big, fat fluffy and dense brush like this.

Highlighter Brush

I personally prefer a tapered highlighting brush over a traditional fan brush because it offers much more control.

A smaller brush allows you to place highlighter exactly where you want it for a subtle glow rather than an overly metallic finish.

But depending on what look you’re going for, a dual-sided highlighter brush is a good investment.

Contour Brush

For adding dimension to your face with cream or powder bronzer, a good angled contour brush is essential to making it look natural and not streaky. The Ilia Sculpting Brush works beautifully for this.

Eye Brushes

Eyeshadow Brush

For everyday makeup, a medium-sized eyeshadow brush is really all you need for applying color across the lid. This is the one I use every day.

Crease Brush

When I want to add a bit more definition, I reach for a crease brush. The smaller shape allows you to gradually build depth while keeping everything beautifully blended.

Eyeliner Brush

If you wear gel eyeliner, an eyeliner brush makes application significantly easier and more precise than trying to apply it freehand. I’ve been relying on this Bobbi Brown one for a decade now. But I use an angled one when I want to do a slightly winged liner.

Angled Brow Brush

A small angled brow brush paired with a spoolie is my preferred tool for filling in brows naturally. It allows you to mimic hair strokes while blending everything together for a soft finish.

Although, admittedly, my most used brow pencil comes with a spoolie so often I just use it with the pencil!

Synthetic vs. Natural Makeup Brushes

While natural hair brushes were once considered the industry standard, today’s synthetic brushes are incredibly well made.

I personally prefer synthetic brushes because they work beautifully with cream and liquid formulas, are easier to clean and are cruelty-free. Nearly every brush I reach for today features synthetic bristles.

How Often Should You Wash Makeup Brushes?

Regularly cleaning your brushes helps them perform better and keeps oil, bacteria and old makeup from transferring back onto your skin.

As a general guideline:

• Foundation and concealer brushes: once a week
• Cream product brushes: once a week
• Powder brushes: every two to three weeks
• Eye brushes: every one to two weeks

That being said I am happy when I wash my makeup brushes monthly! Let’s be real.

What makeup brushes do beginners need?

If you’re just starting out, I recommend investing in a foundation brush, powder brush, blush brush, concealer brush, eyeshadow brush and brow brush. Those six brushes will cover almost every everyday makeup routine.

Are expensive makeup brushes worth it?

In my experience, yes—particularly for complexion brushes. A quality brush lasts for years and often makes more of a difference than upgrading your makeup products themselves.

I have used cheap brushes in the past and they’ve left spare hairs on my face, are harder to wash and in general I find don’t lay product done as seamlessly. 

How long do makeup brushes last?

With proper care, high-quality makeup brushes can last for many years. I still have brushes in my collection that are more than a decade old.
