Whether it’s your first visit or fiftieth visit (or if you’ve lost count like me!), the city offers something for everyone. The key to enjoying your trip? Packing correctly!

A well-curated packing list can elevate your experience, especially with London’s notoriously unpredictable weather. As the founder of En Route to Rêverie, I’ve perfected my London packing list for all seasons. Whether you’re braving the rain, strolling through markets, or heading to a chic bar — this guide will help you pack comfortably and stylishly.

What to Pack for London

London’s weather is famously unpredictable, which is why I always pack my favorite travel umbrella regardless of the season. From the chill of Winter to the unexpected sunshine of Summer, here’s what you’ll need to pack to stay comfortable and stylish in London no matter the season.

Don’t miss my What to Wear in London guide, too.

What to Pack for London in Winter

London Winters are cold, damp, and often rainy so you’ll want to pack accordingly. Despite the chill, London’s Winter charm is second to none. From the twinkling lights in Covent Garden to cozy afternoon tea, there’s nothing like London at Christmas.

Wool Coat

A wool coat is your best friend in London during the Winter months! Opt for something stylish yet functional. Think a long wool-blend wrap coat that keeps you cozy without adding too much bulk. And of course a neutral color that goes with everything is key.

Black Trousers

You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of black trousers. Whether you’re heading out for an evening of theatre in the West End or popping into a charming pup for lunch, black pants are versatile enough for any occasion. Plus, they’re easy to dress up or down and they always look polished. I always have a pair packed for days when I want to look effortlessly chic but still comfortable.

Water Resistant Boots

London is made for walking, and you’ll be doing a lot of it! Invest in a stylish pair of water resistant boots that will keep your feet dry during those inevitable rainy days. Opt for something like a Chelsea boot that’s both functional and fashionable. A sturdy pair of boots will ensure you can explore the city comfortably without worrying about puddles or damp feet. This pair from Freda Salvador is super lightweight, making them perfect for travel! Use code WITWHIMSY10 for 10% off!

What to Pack for London in Spring

Spring in London is all about layers! The weather can be a mix of chilly mornings and mild afternoons, but with the right wardrobe pieces you’ll be prepared for anything. If you’re traveling with a dad, brother, or boyfriend don’t miss my Men’s London Packing List for Spring and Summer.

Trench Coat

Spring in London calls for a versatile, lightweight jacket. A trench coat is an obvious choice and one of my go-tos. It’s stylish, functional, and can easily be layered over anything from a sweater to a dress. This style is a classic from J.Crew as is this one from Sézane, both of which I own and have loved for years. I also love a chic leather jacket for chillier evenings.

Layering Pieces

Pack a mix of layering pieces to keep you comfortable throughout the day. Think cozy cardigans (use code MEGHANDONO10 for 10% off at Jenni Kayne), stylish blazers, high quality t-shirts, and cashmere tees that you can easily throw on or take off as the temperature changes. Plus, lots of layering pieces means you have endless outfit combinations!

Comfortable Sneakers

I always do a lot of walking when I’m in London. Comfortable sneakers are essential for long days of sightseeing, especially when you’re getting your steps in at The V&A or strolling through Hyde Park. Choose a stylish pair with good support that will keep you comfortable while also looking good with almost any outfit. These are another pair I love.

What to Pack for London in Summer

Historically, London’s Summer temperatures have rarely been scorching (although the last few Summers the city has experienced significant heat waves), but they’re certainly warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities like picnics in the park or rooftop dining.

Linen Pieces

Linen is your best friend for Summer in London as many spots still don’t have AC. Lightweight and breathable, linen pieces will keep you cool during warm days without sacrificing on style. Think linen tops, trousers, and jumpsuits that pair effortlessly with almost everything. A linen dress is also a great option for those days when you want to feel polished but still relaxed.

Tailored Dress

Channel British style with a chic tailored dress! It’s polished enough for more refined outings like a visit to an art gallery or afternoon tea, but still comfortable enough for casual sightseeing. Look for dresses that are breathable and flattering, something that can easily transition from day to night with a quick change of accessories.

Woven Bag

A straw bag is the perfect accessory for Summer in London. It’s not only stylish, but also practical for a day of exploring or shopping in one of the city’s many markets. A woven bag adds a chic, relaxed vibe to any Summer outfit, and its lightweight design makes it easy to carry all your essentials (plus a little more!)

What to Pack for London in the Fall

Fall in London is quite possibly my favorite season. It offers the perfect mix of crisp air and mild temperatures. It’s also one of the most beautiful times to visit the city, with colorful leaves in the parks and cozy pubs offering warm drinks and a roaring fire.

Striped Sweater

A classic striped sweater is a must-have for Fall in London. It’s chic, timeless, and perfect for layering (plus I never met a striped sweater I didn’t love!) Whether you’re strolling along the Thames or grabbing a coffee and pastry at a local café, a striped sweater is a classic option. Pair it with jeans for a relaxed look or layer it under a jacket for extra warmth. Use code MEGHAND10 for 10% off my favorite La Ligne striped sweaters.

Lady Jacket

A tailored lady jacket or tweed jacket in a classic color like navy, black, or camel will go with almost anything and can easily transition from day to night. I almost always have this ba&sh jacket in my suitcase for a Fall trip!

Boots

Boots are a Fall essential in London. With the city’s cobblestone mews and unpredictable weather, you’ll want a pair that’s both stylish and practical. From sleek suede booties to chic kitten-heel boots, there’s a boot for every Fall outfit. A pair of ankle boots with a low heel can easily take you from day to night, while tall boots are perfect to pair with skirts and dresses.

Jeans

I always have at least one pair of denim in my suitcase for a Fall trip to London. Whether you’re wearing a classic straight leg or a more relaxed style, jeans are perfect for long days of shopping or a day-trip out of town. They pair well with nearly everything and are easy to dress up or down depending on your plans. This pair and this pair from Agolde are two of my go-tos.

Packing Tips for London

  • Pack Light with a Carry On: A carry on bag will make getting around the city much easier, especially when navigating the Tube. Opt for versatile pieces in neutral colors that can mix and match easily to save space in your suitcase.

  • Comfort is Key: London is a city made for walking, so comfortable shoes are essential. Be sure to pack shoes that are both stylish and practical, especially when you’ll be doing a lot of exploring. I typically wear my sneakers on the plane and pack one pair of boots and one pair of flats.

  • Be Prepared for Anything: London’s weather can be unpredictable, so I always have my trusty travel umbrella with me just incase.

  • Prioritize layers: London’s weather can change quickly, so layering is essential no matter the time of year. Pack pieces that you can easily add or remove depending on the temperature.
