There’s something especially lovely about London in the summer. The city feels lighter somehow. Parks are full, pub gardens are buzzing and daylight stretches well into the evening. It’s one of my favorite times to visit London!
What to Pack for London in Summer
If you’re planning a trip and wondering what to pack for London in summer, know this: dressing for London can be a little trickier than it first appears.
Unlike many European summer destinations where heat often dictates your wardrobe, London tends to require a bit more thought. One day may call for a breezy dress and sandals while the next might have you reaching for a lightweight trench or knit layer by evening. Add in plenty of walking, the occasional rain shower and a city style that leans polished over overly casual, and packing thoughtfully becomes important.
After many trips to London (in many different seasons), I’ve learned that the best London summer packing list is one built around versatile layers, practical footwear and elevated basics you can restyle multiple ways.

Why Packing for London in Summer Is Different
Summer in London is generally mild and pleasant, but it’s not always predictably warm. Even in July or August, mornings can feel crisp, evenings often cool down and rain can arrive with very little warning. While you may absolutely get beautiful warm weather, I’ve found it’s best to prepare for variety rather than pack exclusively for heat. (The one caveat I’ll offer is: recent Summers have seen heatwaves across Europe, including London. While this is not the norm, definitely check the weather before you go – and ensure your accommodations have air con!)
London is also an exceptionally walkable city. Between long days exploring neighborhoods, hopping on and off the bus, museum visits, market wandering and dinner reservations across town, comfort matters just as much as style IMO.
Stylistically, London feels a bit more polished. People tend to look put together without appearing overdone. That balance of functional and elevated is what I always aim for when getting dressed there. This is also why I tend to pack differently for London than I might for somewhere like the South of France in summer.

What to Pack for London in Summer
Lightweight Dresses
London summers are ideal for pieces that feel breezy but still polished. I usually reach for midi dresses, linen dresses, cotton poplin dresses and shirt dresses that can easily transition from daytime sightseeing to dinner. I think dresses with lace detailing are also lovely to pack for London, as well as tailored dresses.
A simple black dress can also be particularly useful since it can be styled casually with sneakers during the day or dressed up with flats or sandals at night.
Floral dresses also always feel right in London, especially for brunches, pub lunches or afternoon tea!
Lightweight Trousers
I never travel to London without trousers. Even in summer, lightweight trousers are one of the most practical pieces to pack. Linen trousers work beautifully for cooler mornings, travel days or when you want to feel slightly more polished.
Linen shorts can also be a chic option for especially warm days.
Lightweight Trench or Jacket
A lightweight trench coat feels quintessentially London, but it’s also incredibly functional. It works for cooler mornings, drizzly weather and evenings when temperatures dip.
If a trench feels too heavy depending on the forecast, I’d opt for a crepe blazer, cropped jacket or lightweight utility jacket instead.
Because London weather can change quickly, having one polished outer layer you can throw on over nearly everything is always worth it.
A Lady Jacket
A lady jacket is one of those pieces I especially love packing for London. It instantly makes an outfit feel polished while still being practical for shifting temperatures.
Whether worn over a knit tank, layered atop an A-Line dress (like the one I’m wearing above), or paired with trousers, it adds structure without the heaviness of a traditional blazer or coat.
White Denim
White or ecru denim is another staple I often bring as it pairs well with nearly everything and feels crisp for summer.
Lightweight Tops
Comfortable Walking Shoes
One thing about London: you will walk a lot.
If you’re bopping between neighborhoods like Notting Hill, Marylebone, Mayfair, Chelsea and enjoying long museum days, your shoes need to be genuinely comfortable.
My favorites to pack for London in summer:
White sneakers are often my most worn pair because they work with dresses, trousers and denim alike. Ballet flats feel especially fitting in London and are ideal when you want something polished but still easy. Comfortable sandals pair perfectly with dresses or skirts.

Accessories Worth Packing
Accessories can make a big difference without taking up much space. For London in summer, I usually pack:
- sunglasses
- a compact umbrella
- simple jewelry
- a straw hat for particularly sunny days
- a hand fan or compact electric fan
- basket bag
- leather tote
A compact travel umbrella is always worth bringing, even if rain isn’t in the forecast. London weather can shift quickly (a lesson I continue to learn over and over again).
And one item people often overlook? A hand fan or compact electric fan. While London summers are generally mild, some Tube stations and older Tube cars can be sweltering, especially during busy commuting hours. A lightweight hand fan takes up virtually no room in your bag and is one of those small travel items you’ll be very grateful you packed.
Outfit Ideas for London in Summer
For Sightseeing and Museum Days
For walking-heavy days in London, I always prioritize lightweight layers and comfortable shoes. Tailored shorts, a crisp button-down and flat sandals (I’ve walked miles in this pair!) strike that perfect balance of polished and practical.
For Afternoon Tea
A floral dress paired with a soft cardigan always feels right for afternoon tea in London. It’s polished, classic and easy to dress up without feeling overly formal. I’m a big fan of Reformation’s floral dresses for Summer.
For a Day Trip Outside London
Whether you’re heading to the countryside or another charming town just outside the city, I like pieces that feel comfortable but still put together. A lightweight cotton poplin skirt, easy top (and cardigan, just in case) and practical flats make this kind of outfit one I’d happily wear all day. For Dinner Out
Packing Tips for London in Summer
Prioritize layers over heavy outerwear.
You likely won’t need bulky jackets, but lighter layers will be useful.
Bring shoes you can truly walk in.
London is best explored on foot! But I suggest packing these bandaids in case you end up developing blisters.
Expect occasional rain.
A compact umbrella or lightweight weather-ready layer is worth bringing, even in the Summer.
Be prepared for lack of AC.
Even when London itself feels mild, older Tube lines, crowded stations and some restaurants can be very hot due to the lack of universal AC like we have here in the States.
Plan for full days out.
London is a city where you often leave in the morning and stay out far longer than expected. Between museums, shopping, pub stops, parks, walking between neighborhoods and dinners across town, I like to dress (and pack) with long days in mind.
