I’m presently spending the month in London and it’s actually my third trip here this Winter so to say I’ve become an expert at packing for winter in London would be an understatement. London in winter has a certain magic to it. There’s the glow of shop windows along Regent Street, cozy pubs tucked down historic lanes, museum afternoons that stretch into candlelit dinners and the unmistakable romance of a city that feels lived-in rather than polished.
But if you’ve never packed for winter in London before, it can also be a bit of a puzzle. As the founder of En Route to Rêverie, I feel so lucky that traveling to London is actually part of my job and I always look forward to returning – no matter the season.
What to Pack for Winter in London
London winters aren’t necessarily brutal, but they are damp, gray and layered. Temperatures typically hover between the mid-30s and mid-40s Fahrenheit, with plenty of drizzle and overcast days. The key isn’t extreme cold protection — it’s smart layering, weather-appropriate outerwear and comfortable, polished shoes that can handle a lot of walking.
Over the years, I’ve traveled to London many times during the winter months and my packing list has become refined, edited and very intentional. Much like my Paris winter packing lists and winter outfit roundups, the goal is to pack fewer pieces that work harder and mix effortlessly together.
Below is exactly what to pack for winter in London, with styling tips, practical considerations, and pieces I repeatedly rely on for chic winter outfits.

Start With a Neutral Winter Color Palette
Before we get into specific items, let’s talk about color. One of the reasons packing for winter in London can feel seamless is that the city naturally lends itself to a neutral palette.
I typically stick to:
- Black
- Camel
- Gray
- Navy
- Cream
This mirrors how I approach my winter capsule wardrobe and makes it incredibly easy to mix outfits without overpacking. If you want to add interest, texture is your friend — think brushed cashmere, leather and textured knits rather than bold color.
The Coats You’ll Actually Wear in London
If there’s one category you should prioritize when packing for winter in London, it’s outerwear. You’ll be wearing your coat constantly and it needs to work with everything in your suitcase.
A Tailored Wool Coat
A classic wool coat is essential. I gravitate toward structured, timeless silhouettes in black or camel — styles that instantly elevate even the simplest outfit underneath.
This is the same type of coat I reference often in my Paris winter outfit posts and winter travel outfit guides. Look for:
- Mid-thigh to ankle length
- Wool or wool-cashmere blend
- Room to layer a sweater underneath
Toteme makes my favorite high quality outerwear. I also have additional style recommendations and brands to browse in my guide to my Favorite Coats for Winter.

For London in Winter I often bring this belted wrap coat from & Other Stories. It’s warm, well-constructed, and is the perfect outer layer for cold days. Be sure to size down. I am wearing a S.
While I wouldn’t say I typically pack light, I do always try to wear my heaviest winter coat on the plane to save space in my suitcase.
A polished wool coat works just as well for museum days as it does for dinner reservations.
A Weather-Resistant Layer
London weather is unpredictable, so I always pack a second outer layer that can handle drizzle. This might be:
- A trench coat with a removable liner or with a hood
- A lightweight waterproof coat with a clean silhouette
You won’t need a full parka most of the time, but having something water-resistant is key.
This style is a classic from J.Crew as is this one from Sézane, both of which I own and have loved for years. This time I packed this Sezane style that’s a bit more on trend. I also usually find great trenches and parks at Mango.
I also love a chic leather jacket for chillier evenings. And for truly soggy weather in your forecast, you may consider a jacket from the brand Rains.

Knitwear: The Foundation of Winter Packing
Sweaters do most of the heavy lifting in a London winter wardrobe. I usually pack three to four sweaters that can rotate throughout the trip.
What I Look For in Travel-Friendly Sweaters
- Merino wool or cashmere
- Not crazy bulky but still warm
- Neutral colors that layer easily
My go-to formulas include:
- A classic black, cream and gray crewneck
- A slightly oversized knit for cozy days
- A thinner knit that works under a blazer or coat
La Ligne makes my favorite sweaters for travel and you can also browse all my favorite cashmere sweaters, too if you’d like additional recommendations of knitwear I have vetted.
Bottoms That Balance Comfort and Polish
London is a walking city. You want bottoms that are comfortable enough for long days but still feel pulled together.

Straight-Leg or Relaxed Trousers
Tailored trousers are my MVP for winter travel. The can be warmer than jeans, are easy to dress up or dress down and feel quite versatile.
Opt for:
- Wool or ponte fabric
- High-rise, straight or relaxed fit
- Black, gray or navy
Rainy and overcast Winter days in London (of which there are many!) call for an outfit that will keep you cozy and warm while still looking chic. Black trousers are one of the most versatile items you can pack. During the day I pair them with a sneaker, like Converse, and then at night I switch out the shoe for something a bit dressier.

Classic Denim
I usually pack one pair of jeans, typically a straight-leg or subtle wide-leg style. I find a dark wash feel most appropriate in winter and they transition easily from day to night.
This pair and this pair from Agolde are two of my go-tos.
Leather Pants
I also personally love a leather pants moment in London for winter evenings out! This pair is my favorite (seen above).

Dresses That Work With Tights and Boots
Dresses are often overlooked in winter packing lists, but they’re incredibly useful in London.
I recommend packing:
- One knit or sweater dress
- One long-sleeve midi dress or mini dress
Paired with tights and ankle boots, dresses offer an easy one-and-done outfit option and are perfect for theater nights or nicer dinners.
Don’t forget to pack at least one pair of tights for pairing with your dresses and skirts.

Shoes: Where Practicality Really Matters
If there’s one place not to compromise, it’s footwear. London sidewalks can be slick and uneven and you’ll be on your feet far more than you expect.
Comfortable Ankle Boots
A low-heeled or flat ankle boot is essential for winter outfits in London. Look for:
- Leather or weather-treated suede
- Rubber or textured sole
- Cushioned insole

Other Styles to Consider
If you have room, consider packing:
- A second ankle boot in a different color
- A sleek loafer if weather permits
- Comfortable and sporty yet chic sneaker
- Knee high boots to style with dresses and skirts
Avoid thin-soled shoes or anything too delicate — winter in London is not the time. And don’t miss my full guide on What Shoes to Wear in London.
Cold-Weather Accessories
Accessories are what make winter outfits feel intentional rather than bulky.
A Warm Scarf
I always pack at least one oversized scarf. It functions as:
- Extra warmth
- An outfit finisher
- A travel blanket on flights
Neutral colors work best and pair easily with multiple coats.
Gloves and a Hat
London wind can be biting, especially along the Thames. Lightweight wool gloves and a classic beanie knit hat are non-negotiables.
Umbrella
London’s weather can be unpredictable, so I always have my trusty travel umbrella with me just incase.
As for other accessories, you should bring a pair of sunglasses and then some great simple jewelry as well.
Layering Pieces That Make Outfits Work Harder
These are the unsung heroes of winter packing. Think cozy cardigans (use code MEGHANDONO10 for 10% off at Jenni Kayne), stylish blazers, high quality t-shirts, and cashmere tees that you can easily throw on or take off as the temperature changes. Plus, lots of layering pieces means you have endless outfit combinations!
Base Layers
A thin heat-tech or merino base layer can make all the difference, especially if you’re sensitive to cold. I wear them under sweaters on colder days without adding bulk.
A Tailored Blazer
A blazer adds polish instantly and is a staple I find so versatile. It’s perfect for dinners, museum days or casual meetings layered under a coat.
You can shop my collection of favorite blazers and tweed jackets in The Shop.
Evening and Elevated Pieces
You don’t need a separate “evening wardrobe” for London, but one or two elevated pieces are helpful because I think it is a great town to get dressed up and go out in! Whether that’s a show on the West End or an evening spent sipping martinis at one of the amazing cocktail bars the city has to offer.
Consider packing:
London style leans understated and chic rather than flashy, which aligns beautifully with a timeless winter wardrobe so you can wear these pieces long after you’re back home from London.

What to Wear on the Flight to London
I always plan my travel outfit carefully, especially in winter.
My go-to formula:
- A warm sweater that’s on the bulkier side
- Comfortable trousers or leggings
- My heaviest coat
- Scarf that doubles as a blanket
Check out my full guide of What to Wear on a Long Flight.
Beauty and Winter Skin Essentials
London winter air can be drying, so I adjust my beauty routine slightly.
I prioritize traveling with:
- Rich moisturizer for evenings
- Hydrating serum
- Lip balm
- Hand cream

Final Packing Tips for Winter in London
- Check the forecast before you go, but expect variability
- Prioritize layers over heavy single pieces
- Choose comfort without sacrificing polish
- Stick to a cohesive color palette
