There’s something magical about winter travel—whether you’re wandering through a snowy European city, enjoying après-ski in the Alps, or cozying up by a fireplace in a mountain cabin. I think as I’ve grown older I actually enjoy winter more? I sure enjoy Winter Outfits, this much I know.
That being said, packing for winter trips can be a challenge.
How do you fit all the cozy layers you need into a carry-on? How can you look stylish while staying warm? And most importantly—how do you avoid the stress of trying to mix and match your way through the cold-weather season?
This is where a winter travel capsule wardrobe comes in, and today, I’m going to help you build one.
Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe
Creating a travel capsule wardrobe for winter not only helps streamline your packing but also takes the guesswork out of deciding what to wear when you’re away.
Essentially, by sticking to a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched, you’ll have plenty of options to stay chic and cozy without overpacking.
What Is A Travel Capsule Wardrobe?
A travel capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of versatile clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. Think of it as a minimalist approach to packing—fewer pieces, more combinations and ideally less stress.
A capsule wardrobe is designed to save space in your luggage while ensuring you have everything you need to stay stylish, comfortable, and prepared for anything your trip throws at you.
For winter travel, the challenge is balancing style and practicality. You need pieces that are warm, functional, and stylish enough for photos, but you don’t want to lug around bulky coats or extra shoes. The beauty of a winter travel capsule wardrobe is in the layering. You can create multiple looks from just a few core pieces, so you never feel like you’re wearing the same outfit twice.
Now, let’s break down how to create your own winter travel capsule wardrobe using some of the high-quality, versatile pieces from my capsule wardrobe guide.
How To Build A Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Winter
Step 1: Consider Your Destination
The first lens I select clothes for a trip through is always where I am going. I want my looks to reflect the sense of place where I’ve traveled.
Step 2: Choose Your Base Layer
The base layer is the foundation of any winter outfit, so don’t skimp on this step. A good base layer should be both warm and breathable, wicking away moisture while keeping you cozy.
For winter, I like the Uniqlo Heattech Tops. They are lightweight but warm, offering that perfect first layer under your sweaters or coats.
Fleece-lined leggings are another wardrobe essential for winter travel. Not only do they keep you warm, but they’re also so versatile—wear them under skirts, dresses, or even just with your favorite sweater.
If you’re looking for a bit more luxury, the J.Crew Everyday Cashmere Turtleneck is a great choice for layering under jackets and coats for extra warmth without adding bulk.
Step 3: Focus On Layering Pieces
The beauty of winter travel lies in layering in my opinion. Your capsule should have a mix of key layering pieces such as sweaters, cardigans and long-sleeve tops that you can throw on over your base layer or under a heavier jacket.
Whenever I am packing for a winter trip, I work to choose items can double as both warm layering options and stylish standalone items. If an item can’t be worn multiple ways – even if it is super warm – it isn’t coming with me.
A chunky, but not too chunky, knit sweater (like the Jenni Kayne Cashmere Fisherman) or a stylish striped knit (like the La Ligne Lean Lines Sweater) are perfect for this. These pieces are incredibly versatile and can take you from a relaxed day sightseeing to a dinner out without a problem.
If you’re planning to spend time outside, opt for a fleece-lined jacket or merino wool sweater for extra warmth and flexibility. I love how these layering pieces add both function and style to your capsule, and you’ll find that mixing and matching them gives you endless outfit possibilities.
Step 4: Pack a Wool Coat
A wool coat is an absolute wardrobe essential for any winter travel capsule. Whether you’re in a chic European city or headed to a cozy mountain getaway, a well-tailored wool coat is the perfect outer layer.
For something classic and versatile, I recommend & Other Stories Voluminous Coat—it’s simple, elegant, and goes with everything. I’m wearing it above in a size Small (size down!) I like how it fits well over blazers and leather jackets making it ideal for a winter travel capsule as your coat of choice.
If you want something a little more elevated, consider a double-breasted wool coat (like those you’ll find in the selection of J.Crew Wool Coats) for a more structured look.
And, for more of a splurge with a stunning fabric and style – choose a coat by Toteme.
If you’re heading to Paris, the right coat will keep you warm without compromising your personal style. For more Parisian-inspired looks, check out my Paris Winter Outfits post to see how to style this key piece for any European winter adventure.
Step 5: Pack Versatile Bottoms
When it comes to bottoms, I recommend packing a mix of pants and skirts that can easily pair with your other pieces. Think straight-leg jeans (like the Levi’s 501 Crop or Agolde Riley), which are perfect for city exploration and work with a variety of shoe styles. I also particularly love a pair of gray jeans in the winter.

You could also opt for wool trousers (like the Aritzia Agency Pant in Wool) for a more elevated look that will keep you chic while still warm. I personally love this pair of trousers by J.Crew for travel (I wear a size 8) or the Aritzia Effortless Pant (size 8 as well).
Or, I always love the look of a cool vegan leather trousers, too. Dress them up or dress them down like I did above for a day of exploring in Paris.

A wool midi skirt is a great option for those who like to dress up a bit (like me!), and you can always layer fleece-lined tights underneath for extra warmth. I’ll pair my favorite midi skirts with a cozy sweaters, turtlenecks, or your wool coat to balance the cold.
Step 6: Choose Your Shoes Wisely
When it comes to footwear for winter travel, comfort and style are key. A chic pair of boots is a must-have, as they’ll keep your feet warm, dry, and stylish, whether you’re strolling through a snowy city or hiking through a winter wonderland. Opt for water-resistant boots with a warm lining and rubber soles for traction.
You’ll also want to pack a pair of shoes for indoor or non-snowy days—think stylish Chelsea boots or ankle boots (like these water resistant boots I own and love) that pair well with your layered outfits.
And of course, don’t forget your favorite pair of sneakers. I usually travel in a pair that I’ll style other ways the rest of the trip.
Step 7: Accessorize
Accessories are a great way to finish your winter outfit and add some visual interest. Think cozy scarves, chunky hats, and leather gloves—all of which add both warmth and style to your outfits.
I always find good winter accessories at J.Crew and I never travel without my favorite cashmere travel wrap.
I usually also bring a few bags. A tote as my personal item on the plane, a versatile crossbody bag and a bag that works well for the evening. Shop My Bag Collection.

Hopefully this post helps you guys build a travel capsule that works for a variety of destinations, activities and temperatures. With the right base layers, layering pieces, and outerwear, you can mix and match your outfits with ease and travel without the stress of overpacking. (Although let’s be real – I always overpack!!)
