As the founder of En Route to Rêverie, I’ve been lucky enough to visit London in the Fall many times over — scouting new spots, planning client trips and, naturally, building out my own packing list along the way. It might just be my favorite season to visit and dress for! The light turns golden, the leaves go red, and there’s something about pulling on a great coat and a pair of boots that just feels like London. If Summer in London is about breezy dresses, Fall is where London really gets to show off.

What to Pack for London in Fall

If you’re wondering what to pack for London in Fall, the good news is that Autumn is a little more forgiving than most. You’re not fighting the heat or hedging your bets on one warm day like Summer, you’re just layering – and London happens to be a great city for it.

That said, Fall in London isn’t one-note. Early September can still hold onto some warmth, while late November starts to edge toward Winter chill. My rule of thumb: pack pieces you can add to or peel off as the day shifts, rather than one outfit built for one temperature.

Read on for my handy Fall in London packing list and hopefully it will inspire you as you begin packing. I also always recommend you try on your outfits before you put them in your suitcase and keep a Notes app in your phone of what you plan to wear each day and night. This will ensure you don’t overpack and know exactly what’s in your suitcase!

What Is London Weather Like in Fall?

London Fall weather is exactly what you’d picture: crisp mornings, mild afternoons and an ever-present chance of rain (because of course). The weather can shift quite a bit across the season, so I like to break it down by month. Of course I always recommend checking a detailed weather forecast leading up to your trip!

September in London

September in London often still carries some Summer warmth, especially in the first half of the month. I can usually get away with a lighter barn jacket or trench coat instead of a full coat, though evenings start to cool down noticeably.

October in London

October in London is where Fall really settles in. Expect crisp, cool days, golden foliage in the parks and a higher chance of rain. This is when I stop relying on a light jacket and actually reach for a coat, sweaters and boots. 

November in London

November in London edges toward true Winter. Days are shorter, temperatures drop further and damp, gray weather becomes more consistent. If I’m traveling in late November, I pack like I’m heading into Winter and layer from there.

The one constant, no matter when you’re visiting? A reliable umbrella! This packable travel umbrella is always in my suitcase for London, regardless of the time of year.

1. Barn Jacket

A classic barn jacket is practically a requirement for Fall travel to London! It’s sturdy enough to handle a light drizzle, has just the right amount of structure, and layers easily over a sweater once the temperature dips a bit further. Plus it captures those quintessential English countryside vibes.

A quilted Barbour jacket is another classic pick.

2. High Quality T-Shirt

A great, well made t-shirt is a must-have, and I almost never travel without at least a black and a white t-shirt in my suitcase. This one from M.M.LaFleur washes and travels beautifully. It’s great for wearing on it’s own, layering under a crewneck, or styling under a blazer.

I’m also a fan of this tee.

3. Sweater Tee

A cashmere tee is a favorite layering building block for me. It pairs really well under my favorite cropped jackets and blazers, and for a warm Fall day in London it’s great on it’s own!

I size up to a L in this one. 

4. Baseball Cap

Unpredictable Fall weather in London means I always have a baseball cap handy! It’s an easy way to make an outfit feel pulled together, so I always opt for a one in a neutral shade.

5. Blazer

You can’t go wrong with classic blazer in London! Blazers are practically my uniform throughout the Fall – they’re the perfect in-between layer for days when you need coverage but not a full coat. 

The Sézane Michele Jacket has a slightly longer fit and is one of my all time favorite blazers. J.Crew also has a solid collection of blazers and I’ve owned many throughout the years. And I also love the Dickey Jacket from Veronica Beard and certainly think it’s worth the investment.

6. Shoulder Bag

Sleek, easy to style and just the right size for a day of sightseeing without weighing you down!

7. Neutral Sweater

A few good sweaters are the backbone of any Fall in London packing list, and this La Ligne knit is what I reach for year after year. It’s warm enough to wear on its own but still layers nicely under a coat when the wind picks up.

8. Lady Jacket

I always bring a little tweed jacket with me to London in the Fall. This one is so good, I own it in three colors now! Great for pairing with jeans, trousers or even over dresses and skirts. The perfect polished, ladylike touch.

9. Packable Umbrella

A non-negotiable for a Fall trip to London! Showers in London tend to show up with very little warning, so I always keep this packable umbrella tucked in my bag. 

10. Trench Coat

A timeless trench coat will always be a good investment, and always worth packing for Fall in London. They’re the perfect layering piece during the transition from Summer into Fall, and I love how versatile they are.

A double breasted trench coat is a classic, I also own and love the Sézane Clyde Trench which has a boxier, more oversized fit (I suggest sizing down!)

11. Black Trousers

A great pair of black trousers can take you from a day of exploring, right to dinner, they’re truly one of the most versatile items you can pack! Style with a sweater and sneakers for daytime, and make a quick shoe and bag swap for an evening out!

12. Wide Leg Jeans

Wide leg jeans are the real workhorse of my London in Fall packing list. Perfect for running around the city, but also can easily be dressed up if needed.

This Agolde pair is my favorite wide leg pair I’ve tried. I’ve also heard great things about this under $100 pair from Gap.

13. Slouchy Tote

Great for stashing a sweater, an umbrella or a day’s worth of shopping finds. This under $100 option folds flat so it’s great for packing, and comes in a few Fall-ready hues.

For a more tailored look, I think DeMellier makes gorgeous totes.

14. Ballet Flats

A great do-it all shoe for any trip to Europe. Just be sure to break them in before you go!

15. Lugsole Boots

A pair of lugsole boots are perfect for those unpredictable, cold days you’re bound to come across during Fall in London. This under $200 pair style perfectly with jeans and a sweater.

This rain resistant pair have been a true Fall wardrobe MVP for me, especially because they’re lightweight and great for travel.

16. Comfortable Sneakers

No London packing list would be complete without a pair of comfortable sneakers, because you walk a ton in London (it’s the best way to see the city!)

This pair is a beautiful neutral shade, but I also recommend my favorite white sneakers.
