In general, I find men in Paris dress a bit more polished than men in the States. You’ll see far less athleisure, branded sports gear and overly casual clothing and a lot more great coats, knitwear, tailored trousers, dark denim, scarves and stylish shoes.

And fall and winter are particularly good seasons for embracing that Parisian approach to dressing.

If you’re headed to the City of Light as or with a male, here’s my ultimate men’s Paris packing list for fall and winter with stylish, versatile pieces that can take you from a day spent walking around Paris to drinks at a beautiful hotel bar or a special dinner out.

Paris Weather in Fall and Winter

Before you pack, check the forecast right before your trip. Paris weather can vary considerably year to year and transitional months like September and October can be particularly unpredictable.

Fall in Paris (September–November)

Early September can still feel like summer while late November can feel decidedly wintery, which is why layers are key.

For September, think lightweight jackets like chore jackets or bomber jackets, button downs and trousers with a sweater you can add when temperatures drop.

By October, I’d bring a trench coat, wool jacket or another substantial layer along with knitwear.

Come November, you’ll likely want a proper wool coat and warmer accessories, particularly if you plan to spend a lot of time walking around the city.

Winter in Paris (December–February)

Paris winters are generally cold and damp, with temperatures that can feel even colder when you’re spending long stretches of the day outside. While extreme cold isn’t the norm, cold snaps certainly happen, so layers are essential.

A warm coat, knitwear, scarf, gloves and shoes that can withstand wet streets are all essentials.

And regardless of when you visit in fall or winter, I always recommend packing a good travel umbrella.

What to Pack for Paris in Fall and Winter: A Men’s Paris Packing List

Fall and winter are when Parisian style really shines in my opinion. A beautiful coat, great knitwear and polished shoes can do a lot of the heavy lifting.

You also don’t need to bring an entirely different outfit for every day. Instead, focus on versatile layers in a cohesive color palette so you can mix and match throughout your trip.

Here’s what I recommend packing.

1. A Great Wool Coat

If you’re traveling to Paris from November through February, your coat is going to be one of the most-worn pieces you bring, so make it a good one.

I recommend a wool or wool-blend coat in navy, charcoal, camel or black that is roomy enough to layer over a sweater but still has a tailored silhouette. 

A longer coat also provides welcome warmth when you’re spending hours walking around the city.

If you’re visiting in the heart of winter and run cold, warmth should take priority. You don’t want to be miserable while sightseeing because you packed for the outfit rather than the forecast!

I like the selection at Banana Republic, Rails and Vince.

2. A Trench Coat for Fall

A trench coat feels particularly at home in Paris and is an ideal outer layer for September and October.

Wear it over a tee or button down on milder days and add a sweater underneath as temperatures begin to dip.

I’d opt for something classic in khaki, navy or olive that works equally well with denim and sneakers during the day or trousers and loafers for dinner.

Nordstrom has a good selection.

3. Merino Wool and Cashmere Sweaters

Great knitwear is essential for Paris in fall and winter.

Pack a couple of crewneck sweaters in merino wool or cashmere that you can wear over a tee or button down and underneath your coat.

Navy, grey, camel, brown and black are all easy to mix and match.

I also like a quarter zip for men as an alternative to a crewneck. It works well for travel days and can still look polished enough for exploring Paris.

Wear any from the brand Octobre and you’ll fit right in and Alex Mill has some excellent, modern takes on classic sweater styles.

4. A Shirt Jacket or Bomber Jacket

For days in Fall when only a light jacket is needed, a great shirt jacket, chore jacket or bomber jacket is the perfect stylish topper for exploring. Vince and Octobre always have great styles from which to choose. This brand also makes great options. And Rails has so many stylish ones, too. 

You’ll see men all over Paris wearing this jacket which also happens to layer well under heavier coats if needed.

5. Dark, Tailored Denim

Well-fitting denim is a staple year-round in Paris but I particularly like dark denim for fall and winter.

Choose a straight or slim-straight fit in a dark or medium wash and leave heavily distressed denim at home.

Dark jeans can easily go from sightseeing during the day to a casual dinner at night, which makes them particularly useful when you’re trying not to overpack.

6. Chinos or Tailored Trousers

Bring at least one or two pairs of trousers beyond your jeans.

Chinos, brushed cotton pants, corduroys or wool trousers are all great choices for colder months.

Stick with neutral shades like navy, olive, charcoal, camel or chocolate brown so everything in your suitcase works together.

Rails often makes pants that strike a great balance between comfortable and polished. Or consider a pair by Marine Layer.

7. Button Downs

I recommend bringing a couple of button downs that can be dressed up or down.

A classic white or blue Oxford is always a good choice and I also like chambray or a subtle stripe for something more casual.

Wear one on its own during warmer fall days or layer it underneath knitwear when it gets colder.

8. A Breton Stripe

A Breton stripe works just as well for Paris in fall and winter as it does in spring.

I particularly like the versions from French brand Octobre. Wear one under a trench in fall or underneath a wool coat with a scarf in winter for an easy Paris-ready look that doesn’t feel like you’re trying too hard.

9. A Blazer or Sport Coat

If your Paris itinerary includes special dinners, cocktail bars or evenings at nicer hotels, I recommend bringing a blazer or sport coat.

A navy or charcoal style is the most versatile.

In colder months, look for heavier fabrics like wool, flannel or tweed rather than the lightweight linen blends you’d reach for during spring and summer.

You can pair it with a button down and trousers for a dressier evening or wear it over a knit with dark denim for something more relaxed.

10. Comfortable, Stylish Sneakers

You will walk a lot in Paris.

A sleek pair of comfortable sneakers is one of the most important things you can pack, but I recommend something that still looks polished enough to wear throughout the city.

Think minimalist leather sneakers, Adidas Sambas, Converse or another streamlined pair that works with both trousers and jeans. Shopbop Men’s always has a great selection.

And, please, leave the Hokas at home if your feet will allow it. Truly.

Whatever you bring, make sure your shoes are already broken in before your trip.

11. Leather Boots

Fall and winter are perfect seasons for a great pair of boots in Paris.

A sleek Chelsea boot or lace-up leather boot gives you another footwear option for dinners and dressier days while also being more practical for cold and wet weather than suede loafers.

Look for something comfortable enough to walk in and consider treating leather shoes with a weather protectant before your trip.

12. Loafers

If you’re visiting in early fall or have several nice dinners planned, loafers are still worth considering.

I would generally opt for leather loafers rather than suede loafers once you get later into the season given the potential for rain.

If you’re traveling in the middle of winter and trying to pack light, however, I’d prioritize a good boot over loafers.

13. A Scarf

This is one accessory I wouldn’t skip.

A wool or cashmere scarf adds warmth but also instantly makes a basic coat and sweater combination feel more polished.

And you’ll certainly see plenty of French men wearing them.

14. Gloves and a Beanie

For December, January and February, bring gloves and a warm hat.

I prefer simple, understated accessories in neutral colors that coordinate with your coat rather than anything overly sporty.

A cashmere or wool beanie is easy to tuck into your day bag when you’re not wearing it.

15. A Compact Umbrella

Paris rain is possible throughout fall and winter so I always recommend traveling with a compact umbrella.

Choose something small enough to keep in your day bag so you aren’t caught buying one from a souvenir shop when the skies open up.

This one is the best.

16. A Day Bag

A crossbody, messenger bag or sleek backpack is useful for carrying your umbrella, portable charger, camera and anything you pick up throughout the day.

I’d choose something understated rather than overly technical or sporty.

Marine Layer’s canvas bags are ideal for holding your camera, guidebook and a pastry or two, of course.

17. Warm Socks

Do not underestimate the importance of good socks when you are walking around Paris all day in January!

Merino wool socks are particularly helpful for winter trips because they provide warmth without adding a lot of bulk inside your shoes.

What Should Men Wear in Paris in September?

September is very much a transitional month.

You may have warm, sunny afternoons followed by cooler evenings, so I would prioritize layers rather than packing a true winter wardrobe.

Think:

• Tees and button downs
• Lightweight knitwear
• Chinos or trousers
• Dark denim
• Trench coat or lightweight jacket
• Minimalist sneakers
• Loafers

Check the forecast carefully before departing as early September and late September can require very different wardrobes.

What Should Men Wear in Paris in October and November?

By October, you’ll want more substantial layers.

Pack sweaters, trousers, dark denim and a trench or wool coat depending on the forecast.

November generally calls for a proper coat, warmer knitwear and a scarf.

This is also when I’d start swapping loafers for leather boots, particularly if rain is in the forecast.

What Should Men Wear in Paris in December, January and February?

For winter, warmth becomes much more important.

I recommend packing:

• A warm wool coat
• Several sweaters
• Button downs for layering
• Dark denim
• Trousers
• Leather boots
• Comfortable sneakers
• A wool or cashmere scarf
• Gloves
• A beanie
• Warm socks
• A compact umbrella

The key is choosing pieces that layer well. Paris interiors can be quite warm, so you’ll want to be able to remove your coat and scarf and still have a comfortable outfit underneath.

What Not to Wear in Paris in Fall and Winter (For Men)

I always think you should wear what makes you feel best, but if your goal is to feel more in step with Parisian style, I would leave behind:

• Athletic sweatpants
• Oversized logo hoodies
• Heavily branded sportswear
• Band and graphic tees
• Running shoes styled as everyday footwear
• Cargo pants
• Bulky technical outerwear unless the forecast truly requires it
• Anything you haven’t already tested for a full day of walking

Final Tips for Packing for Paris in Fall and Winter

The best Paris packing strategy is to build a wardrobe rather than a collection of individual outfits.

Stick to a cohesive color palette so nearly every sweater works with every pair of pants and both pairs of shoes work with everything.

And remember that your outerwear will be visible in nearly every photo you take outside. If you’re deciding where to invest, I’d put the money toward a coat you love and comfortable, stylish footwear.

Most importantly, check the Paris weather forecast immediately before you pack. A September trip could involve an unexpected stretch of hot weather while a November visit could bring winter-like temperatures.
