French Alps Packing List

French Alps packing list outfit collage featuring cozy sweaters, a white turtleneck, black pants, winter boots, a puffer coat, scarf, beanie and cold-weather travel essentials for a stylish alpine trip

Last winter I was lucky enough to check a bucket list destination off my list when my work as a luxury travel advisor took me to Val d’Isère in the French Alps. I had been dreaming about visiting this destination in France for a long time and it was just as magical as I was hoping. Waking up to snow flurries, indulging in some of the most amazing meals, cocktails by the fire — it was truly a dream.

While I grew up skiing in Colorado, this was my first time visiting an international ski town since I was about 12 so I slightly altered my packing list. I packed my usual base layers and cozy sweaters, but I also mixed things up with a few elevated pieces for luxe dinners and exploring the village of Val d’Isère.

If you, too have been dreaming of a trip to the French Alps, my team at En Route to Rêverie travel atelier can help you plan a magical trip to this very special region. It’s so worthwhile.

1. NAADAM Cashmere Hoodie and Joggers

In the past I have liked this brand’s classic cashmere pieces, plus a cozy matching set is a must for evenings curled up with a book and a glass of wine!

This set is elevated enough to travel in as well. Looking for more inspiration on what to wear on your flight to the French Alps? Look no further than my What to Wear on a Long Flight guide.

2. Varley Knit Half Zip Top and Knit Leggings

Hit the slopes in style with this chic base knit layer that could also double as a loungewear set. Varley make some of my favorite loungewear, and I especially love their Alpine collection for ski days! Nobody does chic athleisure better.

3. La Ligne Val Turtleneck

I’m a huge fan of La Ligne’s high quality knits, so at least one of their sweaters always makes it into my bag when I travel. This knit turtleneck is perfect for layering over leggings to lounge around in, or pairing with trousers.

You can use code MEGHAND10 for 10% off your first purchase at La Ligne.

4. Tuckernuck Fair Isle Cardigan

What’s a winter trip without a bit of fair isle? This cozy chunky knit cardigan is the perfect subtle print but will also keep you warm (and looking stylish!)

5. Jenni Kayne Cable Knit Sweater

Another timeless winter sweater, this cable knit crewneck is perfect to pop over your base layers for Aprés cocktails!

Use code MEGHANDONO10 for 10% off your purchase at Jenni Kayne!

6. Vince Essential Layering Turtleneck

I’m all about layering on the mountain, so I think it’s wise to pack a neutral turtleneck for layering under sweaters. I also sometimes use one to layer under dresses as well.

Plus they’re so small they barely take up any space in your suitcase.

7. Everlane Cashmere Scarf

Everlane makes some of my favorite basics, like this cozy cashmere scarf.

If you’re looking for something more oversized this cashmere travel wrap is a favorite. There’s a reason it is one of my longtime All Meghan’s Travel Essentials.

8. Everlane Cashmere Ribbed Beanie

I never travel to France in the winter without a cozy beanie. This has been a good one I’ve worn for years.

9. CELINE Sunglasses

Bluebird days on the mountain for your apres ski call for eye protection. This is one of my go-to pairs of sunglasses, they’re pricey but they’ve lasted me years.

Of course if conditions call for snow and you’re hitting the slopes, you’ll want goggles.

10. Dorsey Earrings

I typically don’t bring much jewelry when I travel, but this simple pair of moissanite earrings is perfect for adding a bit of sparkle to any outfit you’re planning on wearing.

11. Align Sherpa Coat

This textured sherpa jacket pairs perfectly with trousers for a chic but cozy evening look. The French Alps does glam well and this adds the perfect amount of practical glam in my opinion.

12. Reiss Longline Puffer Jacket

Of course no packing list for the French Alps would be complete without a puffer. I like the look of this longline silhouette, plus it comes with a waist cinching belt that gives a nice shape! It feels a bit more elevated and like a dressier puffer coat which is perfect for the luxury vibes in the French Alps.

13. Reformation Olina Silk Pants

Pair these silk pants with an oversized black sweater and you’re ready for dinner. These drawstring pants couldn’t be more comfortable but also add a bit of polish to an outfit. Plus they take up next to no space in your luggage.

14. Aritzia Effortless Trouser

A longtime w&w staple, these Aritzia trousers are one of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe making them perfect to pack. A pair of black trousers and a simple sweater (with a little bit of jewelry) is my go-to look for evenings out in France during Winter. I recommend sizing up in this pair!

These rain resistant boots are one of my winter wardrobe MVPs. They’re perfect for a day of exploring, and are incredibly lightweight which makes them great for travel.

16. Loeffler Randall Isla Suede Bootie

Another pair of boots I’ve sworn by for years, these sleek suede booties are a nice option to have on hand for dressier evenings! Just be sure to spray your pair with suede protectant before you wear them out on the town.

17. UGG Classic Mini Boots

Of course I had to include a pair of cozy Uggs as they’re a must for any winter or ski trip in my opinion. After a day on the slopes there’s nothing better than slipping into a pair of shearling lined Uggs.
